Da-Lite vs. Grandview....?!?

Projector Owners....

What Screen Size you all watching from what distance...?

Thanks
My viewing distance from the screen is 12 feet. The screen is a 'Da-Lite 4:3 120" diagonal screen'. Effectively I view a 16:9 106" diagonal screen size from 12 feet. I plan to sell my current screen and upgrade to a Da-Lite 16:9 119" screen, while still maintaining the viewing distance at 12 feet.

buddy,

i was pretty much set on a 106" myself but i've been slightly confused since last few weeks. my room length is 19 feet and i have the comfort of changing the position of my couch from 12 feet to 15 feet.

my research tells me ideal distance is 1.5 times the screen width to get the right cinema feel without straining the eyes.

So 106' at 1.5 times comes to about 11.5 feet and 120' at 1.5 times comes to 13 feet. Now i'm seriously considering a 120'. Coz a lot of movies are at 2.35:1 which loses some height at with a 106' screen and will effectively become even smaller though 1.78:1 will give a full 106'

Dalite Model B only has a max 106'. Which Dalite model no. are you considering for the 119'. Can you share the quote for the same ?

Thanks

Why are you "finding it hard"? What kind of problems are you facing?
Even I would like to know what people mean when they say that. Do your eyes hurt or is it difficult to see the entire picture without moving your head or is it just some mind block?

Btw, I have my couch around 14 ft from my 120 inch screen and love it that way. When I am watching alone, I move the couch to ~12 ft. My wife says she gets a headache when she watches from 12 ft, but 14 ft is ok. I know she can't take high SPL, so I think the headache could be because of sound not the viewing distance. So far, none of the guests/friends/hfv members who have dropped in for a movie/demo at my place felt they should have been sitting further away.

Read the highlighted part as within 1.5 times the screen width.

Go for a 119"/120" inch screen and place your couch to anywhere between 12ft and 15ft and see what suits you. Low frequency standing waves accumulate near the wall, so from an acoustics point of view you are covered to some extent since you have around 4ft behind your viewing\listening position. You also get a larger surround sound stage if you use di-pole surround speakers.

What is the price for a daLite 106 inch 16:9 screen in Mumbai? A motorized one. Any Suggestion which model would be the best one?

As long as your projector is upto the task of projecting a good quality 120" screen, for a viewing distance of anything above 12 feet, the 120" screen makes far more sense than a 106" screen.

You are quite right, the Dalite - Model B screens max out at 106" (HDTV format/16:9) or 120" (Video format/4:3). The Dalite - Model C screens on the other hand, do come in 92" / 106" / 110" / 119" / 133" / 159" sizes.

The more specific answer to your question:
Dalite - Model C
Model # 79041
HDTV Format (16x9)
119" (58" x 104")

I am sorry I don't have an actual quote yet.

I got a Grandview CNV 96" Manual pulldown. For some reason, I do see the edges folding in. Fortunately, the folded in parts are the black borders so no issues with the image. Any clues on if something can be done to avoid the screen fold in?

Kalyan can you post some pictures.... Thanks.

anyone using a masking system/method on their 16:9 screen in regards to 2.35:1 movies...?

Thanks

Not easy to implement.. i tried it while installing fixed screen.. tried to make the carpentar understand, but finally ended up without it.

7' x 5' that translates to a wierd 1.4:1 aspect ratio. ??

The effective viewable area (excluding black mask on all sides) is 6.8' x 5' approx, so ratio =6.8'/5'=1.36 (close to 1.33 of 4:3 screens, as 4/3=1.33)

so, while viewing 16:9 movies, Max diagonal size= 93"

and while viewing 2.40:1 movies, Max diagonal size = 88"
