Is there any truth in the beliefs that Blu-ray players are built for blu-ray and the DVD performance of these players are not upto the mark?

Or is it just anecdotal beliefs based on 1 or 2 of the players out there.

Upscaling will depend upon the player and the chipset that the player uses.

For example, the Denon and Oppo players are amongst the better players when it comes to upscaling. The PS3 is in the middle of the pack, with Sony's BDP-S370 just behind it. But the BDP-S370 can actually get rid of the 3:2 pulldown and display an NTSC DVD image in glorious 1080/24P, which the PS3 and many other blu-ray players cannot do.

Bottom line, not all BD players are created equally when it comes to upscaling DVD images.

I dislike upscaling anyway, so it's turned off on both my players.

Looking at the Samsung BD C-5500 as it offers more compatibility of formats than the Sony. Any feedback on its DVD performance?

My requirement is a new DVD player and sound media player. If I buy a philips/pioneer entry level + a WD Live I will spend about 11-12k. That price will fetch me a BDP which in a few years will have some utility due to cheaper Blu-ray media.

Even Panasonic DVD playback is good.

We are discussing DVD playback on BLU-RAY players here, is that what you are recommending?
