Best DVD player iwth USB

Thanks Dushie, for the reply. Few more doubts...
1) Do I need to "FAT32 format" ALL my Pendrive/Memorycard/harddisks which i intend to hook to this DVD Player?
2) Later on, can I use those drives in other devices (say Laptop, Digital camera, mp3 player, car stereo...) without any hickups?
3) Do all DVD players with USB use FAT32 format only or only LG388?

Yes, you need to ensure that primary partition has to be fat 32, they all need to be formatted in Fat32, as NTFS is not recognized by the player

- Yes you can use the same device anywhere else without any hiccups. Lot of users having bigger HDD have made primary partition as Fat32 and secondary as NTFS, they store whatever movies they need to pay in primary partition and it works fine

For all dvd players that play through usb fat 32 is the norm and you need to format in the same to enable them to recognise the disk .

Any dvd player you buy u need to format it in fat32 to enable it to be recognised in the USB slot .

Best is when you go to audition any dvd players, take a thumb drive with u that is already formatted in fat 32 and has vob, divx, xvid , wmv and other type of files on it, test it out on the player you want to buy to check what all works, once u like what u see, u can buy the player ...

This is the best way to select and decide on any one of the various models available
 
Wow!, Thank u so much for this very informative answer. Now i have already bought Lg 388, i will test it with formating my drive. hoping it will surely work :-). Yes, i did have a pen drive with all type of files when i went for audition, but no use!, it didnt read from drive as it wasn't Fat32. The sales rep did not have this tech clue. Anyway Thank u v much Dushie.
 
For those who are interested...

I today tried two movies that my son has on a Sandisk 8 GB pen drive - Meet The Spartans, The Bank Job. Both movies were played surprisingly well by my Oppo 983 onto the Akai 32 inch LCD. Even sitting just 4 feet away from the TV, I could not see any artifacts. The clarity was surprisingly good as were the rendition of colors.

I may be on the way to becoming a partial believer of DIVX movies from a complete disbeliever.

Update : As suggested by Illusion & Dushie, i formated the USB in FAT32 and it works fine. I witnessed LG388 doing a gr8 job! :-). Thanks for the help from the members of this forum.

Gr8 going all!! Before going in for q 250 gb hdd especially for the DVD player, I would advise you to look into the LG manual first . This is because LG supports reading a max of 650 files ( I think) loaded at any one time on the drive inserted. So in other words if U load more than 650 files there is no guarantee of the same being read by the DVD player. Secondly for swissknife to work make sure you have winxp as your OS in your laptop/desktop ! It seems swissknife is not win vista compatible yet :rolleyes: ! For your info- Swissknife is just a software via which you to format your hdd as a fat 32 partition. What it does is that it makes the HDD partition readable by the DVD players. If you format it into two or more partitions , I am not sure whether the second onward partitions of the HDD will be read by DV 388 . Please note Samsung 1080-pk can read multi partitions.

Please note that all formatting techniques (as suggested by Dushie) should be tried and tested on your own risk. I know but it is always safe to give a disclaimer especially in public forums !! :p

Venkat, i am happy to see, you have little faith in Divx files, i am sure if you watch high end divx encoded rips, which are over 1 gb in size you will be happy with the performance of the same, also you are playing them on an Oppo so the response and the performance would be above par as its a high end player,

Most of other forum users like me are playing them on sub 5k players and are happy with the same.

Illusion agree with you on the same,all steps are given and links are provided by me should be followed on your own risk and technical knowledge.
If one is not comfortable and not willing to take the risk, please do not try them out.

Illusion if samsung 1080pk can read multiple partitions its awesome.
As Phillips and few other player's cant even with modified firmwares.

At the same time I am not a full convert yet. I would like to experiment with a few more files including the high resolution 1 GB file that Dushie is talking about.

On the other hand, I have no inhibitions in trying new methods of watching video and listening to audio. I use my laptop quite often to see a movie, and I do use a iPOD, though only with uncompressed AIF format files. I don't like MP3, particularly badly ripped ones. And I have embraced multi channel audio (DVD-A, SACD) a long time ago.

I have downloaded Star Wars which are 2 GB rips with full surround sound and I also have some other downloaded movies like transformers, fast and the furious wilth full 5.1 sound and believe me the quality is awesome. There will be some loss of video signal ( as it is a rip) which is visible when you stand 1 ft away from the TV but when you are standing say 4-5 feet away (normal viewing distance) you can never make out !
 
Hi. This diwali, i bought 32inch LCD : LG80UR (Jazz series) and DVD : LG DV388. I made minimal connections - i.e. Connected TV cable and started watching TV and connected Red-Yello-White (composite out?) of DVD to left side Red-Yello-White of TV and hence able to watch movies using DVD. Also i did HDMI cable connection from DVD to TV. However, i don't know if I am doing efficient used of my devices. i.e. Dont know any basics of changing my settings to make use of best output of both.
If anyone is using same combination of TV, DVD -OR- know the details about tuning up the settings for best output for these two devices i request and appreciate the help.
Few questions :
1) I got HDMI cable with DVD player - I connected the two devices using it. Donno if i need to change any settings after connection. any guidelines?
2) I got Red-Yello-White cable with DVD Player and connected it. but dont have knowledge as whether its the best way to use it?. is it called composite o/p?
3) Heard that Component o/p is better than composite. The manual speaks about Red-Blue-Yellow cables to connect to component. But i didnt get it in DVD player pack. Do I need to buy it seperately? what wud b the cost?

Hi, please relax !!! ;)

Here is what you should do :-


1)Connect your dvd player with single hdmi cable to LG LCD TV. No other cable required.
2) press the resolution button on the remote ( The tv should be connected via hdmi and both the LCD and DVD player should be on).
3) each time you press resolution the pixel depth will be displayed on the DVD display ( Mind you not the tv display). Select the highest possible resolution ( Mine is at 720p- if I try to manually select 1080p which my tv does not support , the tv shows an error that "the resolution is not supported".
4) Switch to Tata Sky for ultimate clarity , but I would ask you to wait for a while as the DTH market has begun to hot up with BIG TV and Airtel entering the markets.
5)Congrats on your buy !! :p

To add to what I just said , why dont you download a few dvd rips available on the net ( Axxo rips are very popular). I am sure you will be amazed at the clariy. Axxo rips have an avg FILE SIZE OF 700MB .
 
phew! this thread was a real long read. at the end of it all i'm back to square one with the question as in the title of the thread "Best DVD player iwth USB"!

so which one has turned out to be the winner so far :confused: based on public perception?

is it philips dvp5996k, lg dv 388, samsung dvd-1080pk, or the pioneer dv-610av-k, pioneer dv-410v-k?

how about a ordered listing with pro's/con's in brief ;)

this would really help me (and probably others) decide as to which dvd player should i pair my panasonic viera tx-32lx800c with. this particular setup is not going to be a full blown ht 5/7.1setup and at a later point in time i may go in for a "digital sound bar" (sonodyne, denon, pioneer) option keeping in mind the space and convenience in my bedroom.

It is the sound which gives it away, Venkat, more than anything else. I dont think there is a huge difference in picture quality provided the DivX is of high quality.

I have seen DivX videos of Pirates of the Carribean and Apocalypto which are simply mesmerizing. But the sound can be bettered, I feel.

The DTS encoded DVDs have a huge advantage in this. I tend to use Circle Surround on my Marantz for these non-encoded formats and that works beautifully.

Its not fair to compare DTS movies with Dolby Digital Movies. DTS sound is louder, fuller and crispier ( as compared to Dolby Digital)if you know what I mean . A better comparision would be between Dolby Digital Encoded movies and Dolby Digital Encoded dvd rips . Is there a loss of sound there cause when ripping ac3 divxs movies it basically extracts the ac3 audio from the DVD as it is and then converts into a bitrate as per your choice !

I dont know about fuller or cripser. Lets just say that I prefer bass through DTS. No question about it.

DivX sound encoding leaves a lot to be desired in general. There is the occassional DivX going over a GB or two which has good sound, but then if it goes into GBs, the main advantage of the DivX which is compactness goes for a toss.

I am a regular visitor to HiFiVision and this is my first post.

I have Philips TV 42PFL7762D & Onkyo HT-S990 THX HTIB.
I am looking for a good DVD player with USB & HDMI upscalling.
I have short listed the SAMSUNG DVD-1080PK and Philips DVDR5570H the main attraction is its ability to upscale regular set top box output to 1080i. Philips also has 250GB HDD and recording capability (not a high priority).

I had a look at LG-DV-388 but not very impressed at the looks & upscalling perfomance.

Philips player doesnt have optical out. Would there be significant difference between optical out and coaxial output ? Please advice.
