Best DVD player iwth USB

if it's launched in delhi then should be available sooner over here in pune too. did you get a chance to take a look at it. has it been worth the wait?

Hello all,
I am a regular visitor to HiFiVision and this is my first post.

I have Philips TV 42PFL7762D & Onkyo HT-S990 THX HTIB.
I am looking for a good DVD player with USB & HDMI upscalling.
I have short listed the SAMSUNG DVD-1080PK and Philips DVDR5570H the main attraction is its ability to upscale regular set top box output to 1080i. Philips also has 250GB HDD and recording capability (not a high priority).

I had a look at LG-DV-388 but not very impressed at the looks & upscalling perfomance.

Philips player doesnt have optical out. Would there be significant difference between optical out and coaxial output ? Please advice.

John

There is no difference between optical and coaxial for short distance transmission, period !

If you have high expectations from a dvd player I would suggest you to go for an oppo or atleast a pioneer 610 . Other budget players ( less than 5k) will not be adequate for your viewing needs !

To Bhuvan :-
I have bought LG DV388 last week and watched a couple of movies. English, Hindi and Kannada. I'm quite happy with it's performance and features. You can also consider to view a demo of it. it's less expensive than other brands having same features.(only Rs.3700)

philips 5996 is available at croma @ pacific mall, near Anand Vihar. I went there a day before diwali but the rush was high and no one was willing to demo a dvd player. Will go there whenever I get time.

To All reading this thread:-

Expectations from a DVD player is a personal thingy. In fact even though you are buying an electronic item worth only 5-6k , you really need to spend a lot fo time demoing all the options available in the market. For example I rated LG DV 388 over the Samsung 1080-pk which is contrary to the popular opinion . But I personally never go with public opinion. I go for products which suit my liking. This is also the same reason why I preferred a SONY AVR as compared to an ONKYO AVR in the same range. Till date I am happy with my decision which is what really counts at the end of the day.

Please Note: All opinions in this thread expressed by owners are as per their own personal preferences and expectations. My advise :-

1) Make your own demo cd as per the movies you watch for demoing the players.
2) Demo diff players with the same TV/LCD system if possible . The TV Brand and size used for demo make a huge huge huge difference.
3)Get your fatcs right. Specs for all dvd players are available on net . Do a thorough research before deciding.

All this may be too much for some but again is the only way of ensuring that you will be recieving a quality product as per your tastes. All the Best !

Illusion, (I guess you are using LG388 player.?) A quesion for you. Have you tried playing AVI clip from USB of LG388?. I tried few clips which i recorded using Canon digicam. It didnt play. Neither my TV (32LG80UR) play it from USB. Any workaround for that? It will be a very useful feature for me if i'm able to play the clips which i record using my Canon.

Thanks ILLUSION for your clarrification on Optical & Coaxial.
I am planning this for a short term and later to sever as a second player once I buy a good HD player some time next year. Hope the price will come down by that time and more content become available widely.

John

There is a lot of catch involved in going the blu ray way . For instance you would have to upgrade your AVR in case your existing avr does not have true hd suppport . Anyway if I were you I would still go for a pio as even when I upgrade to a true hd I would like to play my existing movie collection via the pio and reserve all blu ray movies for the hd player exclusively.Again that is my opinion obviously.

If your receiver has 5.1 analouge input then not to worry abt Blue ray.
Buy player with onboard decoder.

Yes true , but still it is always better for the avr decoder to take care of the same. I remember reading somewhere that analogue connections are subject to a lot of interferences which reduce the audio quality . Hence decoding in AVR is the best way for enjoying true hd sound !

Ya but it is aplicable to digital also. You need quality cable.

Okay, having tried the Samsung, I'm now looking to try out others as well. The primary issue I had with the Philips 5996 was that it had problems with outputting analog audio with HDMI video... but it turns out that that's most likely a configuration thing. So, anyone with a 5996 care to share any issues they've faced? Is it able to play XVid files?

I checked Philips HTib 3565,due to auto resume function I cldnt enter in
root menu of DVD even after I opened & reloaded.
I clt play VOb from usb.

spirovious: just to be clear: you COULD NOT play VOB? or you COULD?

Also, what about subtitle files (.SUB or .SRT)... are they supported? I have several French movies with English subtitles, so need this (both LG and Sammy support this, LG has the best support for subtitle files).

Hi Guys,

Thanks to this excellent thread and thanks to illusion, I have finalized on LG DV 388. Unfortunately, its not yet available in Goa and I have to wait for some more days. I want to use it with my 22" LG30R which has 1080p (on 1680x1080).

I had some basic questions regarding 1080 resolution that are not very clear to me even after going through a number of threads:

Is the HDMI resolution (1080p) available only through HDMI cable? If yes, then what max resolution will I get if I connect LG 388 to the TV using component cable?

I have connected very old DVD Player, Philips 625K and it gives me the PAL resoultion (576i) using component cable when I watch DVDs. I guess that is because the output of the 625K is PAL-DVD.

I want to know whether to go for HDMI cable if it is not bundled. Can anyone also tell me the average cost of HDMI cable?

Thanks in advance!

I got LG HDMI cable bundled with LG 388 player. The showroom guy told that it costs around Rs.1000. but local brands are availble for Rs.300 it seems.
I am not sure, though, my opinion is you have to use HDMI cable to get the max resolution at 1080P. Waiting for some other's answer with more details.
