Auto setup says speaker polarity is wrong!!!

Hello,

Thanks to SkdMrk lending me his YPAO mic, I tried the auto-setup on my yammy 463 today. The auto setup gave me a warning that the polarity of my FR and FL were wrong. I checked the connections at the AVR and the speaker ends and going by the color of the wires they looked okay to me. Nonetheless, I switched the connections at the speakers' end and reran the auto-setup. This time, it said that the polarity was correct.

Now the niggling questions are, could the auto-setup have been wrong? Have I connected the speakers incorrectly based on what it said? If the polarity is wrong now, would it damage my speakers?

Is there any other way to check if the polarity is correct?

yes, there is a very simple and elegant way-

take the two leads of the speaker/crossover and attach (momentarily) to the positive of the system to an active 1.5 volt pen-torch cell,

if the cone moves outwards - the connection is positive

No, it would not damage the speakers, but sound would be out of phase.

This tends to happen at times, with no specific explanation, have seen it twice on my Denon as well, while running Audyssey....

Best option is to check wiring and if you still get it, hit the Ignore button and carry on

The chances of the software having a glitch is remote as the same software is used in all amplifiers made by Yamaha. How did you connect the colours? Which colour went to +ve and which colour went to negative? If the YPAO says the polarity is now all right, most probably, without knowing, you had connected it incorrectly before.

Another member from Bangalore was complaining that his 863 was also showing incorrect polarity for one speaker, though he was very sure he had corrected it properly.

One way of trying to circumventing this issue is to reset the receiver, re-connect the wires, run YPAO and see what it says. If it yet says the same thing, there is vague possibility that the connections for the front L&R have been inadvertently reversed inside the AVR. Only a service engineer can confirm this. There is also a possibility that something similar could have happened inside the speakers.

My speaker cable has white and black wires, the black one goes to the 'black' terminal and the white one goes to the 'red' terminal. That was the way it always was. will do the reset and try once again as you suggested...

I seem to remember...

What happens when speakers are out of phase is that the stereo effect is lost, and you will experience sound coming from two sources, one to the left, one to the right. There will be no "soundstage".

If you have a really good stereo experience when listening to your speakers, it is unlikely that they are out of phase.

Same thing happened to me. I checked the wiring, found that the AVR was wrong and carried on. When I ran Audyssey the next time (due to addition of IIz speakers), there was no glitch.

I have also experienced the same thing with my Denon1610 and Audessy setup.
While I connected to speakers for the PLIIz through an additional amplifier. The aud.. showed wrong polarity even though they were correct. After reversing the polority even though I heard the sound from the speakers the aud.. setup said no speakers where connected. Also replaced with a new interconnect for the Denon and the Pioneer Amp. The same problem repeated. Ignoring the Aud.. the Height speakers were too loud.

In the 5.1 setup even thought my wharfi 9.2 is louder while Aud.. setup, while playing DVD's the dialogs are very low and I'm not able to understand them.

Finally I dropped the PLIIz setup and also manually configured the 5.1 setup.
