Best DVD player iwth USB

@dirty blue jeans - please go for a pio dv 610, if you have the budget . All pios have excellent quality.

One more thing , stop thinking and just go and buy a pio 610. If you dont have the money save by watching all new bollywood releases at home . With the pricing of the tickets nowadays, if you stay at home for just 1 month you end up saving more than half the cost of a pio 610. :D

So true. Off topic, but I read an article recently where it said that multiplexes make tons of money on the food and eatables everytime a new movie is released and that's why they don't release movies with unknown stars. For them the more the crowd the more sales of food stuffs, snacks, cool drinks, etc. and this is where they make their profit.

I did an analysis for Quantum Of Solace and we did spend around Rs. 400 on the food/snacks taken before and during the interval of the movie, but the tickets itself were only Rs. 160 for me and my wife. I guess its true about saving up money for a Pioneer just by not visiting the multiplex...

Meri bibi ek step aage hai. Paas me ek dhukan hai jahan har DVD mil jaathi hai. Char baashon me. Maineme 10/15 DVD kareed dalthi hain. Uske uppar mainne kum se kum do ya theen baar INOX jhani hai - picture jo bhi ho koi farak nahi padtha.

Sigh! You cant live with them, you cannot live without them.

As you say Illusion, take it with a big smile and enjoy the Popcorn and Salsa.

Cheers

you are lucky to get tickets in 160 bucks! most new movie tickets go upto rs. 200/250 in pune/mumbai, unless of-course you are willing to give up on your weekend sleep and wake up early morning to watch a movie at 8:30-9 am :P

You know they tried this variable pricing in Hyderabad too, but it did not work. Tickets are from Rs. 80 to Rs. 100 for normal screens in the multiplexes and IMAX screen they are Rs. 250 per ticket.

sorry to halt your discussion on movie ticket prices :), i have a question for 5996K. I have lots of avi (xvid) files which are 2gb+ in size and on my hard disk. I want to play them from USB drive (8 gb kingston). Can i play the file (2gb+ single file) on 720p/1080i resolution (component cable) ? I tried this on 5986K, it played every file but did not load the 2gb avi file.

ha ha, you're so right about that. Doesn't matter what I do with the home theater, if I don't go for the real thing once in a while, I'm just asking for trouble.

Actually, I think even I enjoy building/setting up the HT more than watching movies on it ;-)

Most decent halls here start tickets at 160 bucks apiece. If you go in the morning, it's cheaper by about twenty bucks.

No way in hell am I getting out of bed early to watch a movie, and that too just to save a couple of tenners!

But yeah, a 'movie day' costs me about 800 on an average... tickets for me and the missus, plus large popcorns to keep the kid quiet. Then there's the junk-food-meal that inevitably follows.

Man, come to think of it, I could actually save a lot of money if film actors were to go on a strike like the TV actors did! :D

Well, if you have a 2GB AVI file, which is of standard length, that would only mean that it's encoded at a very high bitrate.... anyway, a 2-GB DivX seems to beat the purpose.

However, if you really want to try playing that (to see if it's a size or a bitrate issue) you could break the file down the middle (there are some video slicers you can google for), and try the individual smaller parts. If it still doesn't work, it's a bitrate issue, otherwise it's a size limit.

Hi! I have an LG Dv388. I am extremely satisfied with this player and although I had Philips dvp3146/94 previously, I have to say LG gives a better value for money package.

HDMI upscaling works like a breeze on LG, I use a sony hdmi cable and have a Bravia 26T400A.

Lg is not region free but I made it region free with a little tweak! I think all LG DV388 owners should make their DVD players region free. Its worth it. :)

LG plays HD image files, i tried them and it played them with panache!

The only hitch that I find is that LG DV388 does not have an Auto mode when it comes to changing from NTSC/PAL. So I always have to change manually from NTSC to PAL or vice versa, which can sometimes be a little boring.

Illusion please reply if u can...

Well you have my full and complete attention here pal. Especially with the fact that u 'tweaked' ur player to make it region free. There are many of us huting for that solution and we would really appreicate it if you could help the LG owners here.

I am glad to hear that u r satisfied with the LG the same way I am . As for the NTSC/PAL thingy, I have never faced that problem on my sammy lcd. Can you please elaborate a bit ?

Ok, so here's how to make your LG DV388 region free....

Make sure you dont have any disk in the DVD player's tray. Switch on your dvd player and wait for the "no disk" display. now eject your dvd player's tray and press "000" on your remote. a menu opens up on your screen asking you to enter new region code. the default region code is also displayed, in our case its "5". So we need to press "0" to make it region free (There are 7 regions and 0 is for region free). Press pause to exit. Close the tray and restart the player. (If it doesnt run properly, change it back to region "5".)

Vola! You have a brand new region free DV388!:)

As for the PAL/NTSC problem, LgDV388 expects you to change from PAL/NTSC by ejecting your tray and pressing pause button for 5 seconds (written in the manual). Now once you press it, it changes to PAL, next time you press it it changes to NTSC, the next time you press pause again, unfortunately you get PAL again and not "Auto" or "Multi". This mode "Auto" is really useful as the dvd player itself is supposed to detect if the dvd is PAL or NTSC. This Auto option is however present in the lower range dvd players of LG but not in DV388. I don't exactly know the reason. And it does not depend on your LCD company, whether its Sammy or Sony, coz all LCD tvs have the Auto option. It depends on the output of your dvd players. If your dvd player gives an output of NTSC or PAL, the LCD will adjust itself accordingly. Only that dv388 expects you to change to PAL or NTSC manually for every dvd you play. That is so not cool! So please help!

HD Image files? That's cool! What resolutions and format were you able to play?

HD image files of 1600x1200 resolution, JPEG format (.jpg). downloaded them from a site and burned it on my dvd-rw and played it on my dvd player.

it was awesome. the images took 2-3 seconds to load, but it was worth the wait!:)

Ah, you mean pictures? I thought you meant DVD images. heh heh... if it would play HD movie rips, I'd buy two :D

I thought most players are able to display HD static images? My Samsung was supposed to show the images directly from my camera, but that, like most of the other things, didn't work!

For playing HD movies you need an HD DVD player. How on earth do you expect a DVD player to play HD movies???

Having said that, I often play HD rips in DVD format by Prodji (Prodji rips) and they play well.
