My oppp has a problem of unable to 'Power On' through the remote.
All other buttons in the remote seem to work fine.

I did all the diagnostics suggested by Oppo (from changing batteries to pressing all keys to check the same) but no success.

Oppo shipped a new remote to me, but that too had the same problem.

So they finally guessed it may be a problem with my region mod hardware. I removed the region mod hardware but even then it doesnt help.

However, I now realised I have a bigger problem, the region mod is also not working, so I am also stuck with only Region A disks.

Oppo has suggested shipping it to the US and they will take care of the repair and shipping back costs.

Any suggestions please, incl. the costs to ship it to the US , will be greatly appreciated.

Before you ship it to the US, get it checked by a reliable electronics engineer.

1. If you can get your hands on a Logitech Universal remote, see if that works.

2. Clean the front plate of the player. Maybe it is not receiving the signal properly.

3. Open up the unit and take a cursory glance at the infra red receiver part. There will be a connector connecting that to the motherboard. Remove that, blow some air, connect it and try again.

4. Try the remote from a feet away and if it works, keep moving back till you are in your regular position.

5. If nothing works, it may even be advisable to live with it till you can get someone to hand carry it to the US. The costs of shipping up and down will be prohibitive compared to the cost of the player.

Cheers

It appears this would be a motherboard issue. There should
some kind of device (mosfet, transistor or relay) to turn on the
power to the player circuitry when the remote's power button is pressed.
I suspect that device has gone faulty. I don't think this is a remote or
IR receiver issue, as the other functions are working fine, and
you tested it with the replacement remote too.
You should probably send it across to Oppo with someone travelling to the
US.

How would that explain the region mod kit too having stopped working?

From his post, It looks like he has to pay shipping for one side only, repair and return shipment will be bear by Oppo. If he use Aramex it will be between 3k to 3.5K. Considering the current price and availability of this player..its better to leave it for the Oppo to repair. Most encouraging thing is Oppo to honor the international warranty that too after learning that it was Hard modded for Region free. Wish every company is like that.
All the best Sud.

Did the mod kit stop working the first time, or only after you
removed it and then put it back?
Also, as far as I remember, the mod kit also snoops on the IR remote
data, right? Maybe it caused the fault in the first place.
Also, check if Oppo will void the warranty if a mod kit is installed.

Frankly dont know. The last few discs used were all region, so didnt detect and the rest were rips, so didn't check the problem before. Its likely that the problem was caused by the kit too.

Oppo will honor the warranty, I would send it after removing the chip and they would be fine.

Is it a good idea to remove the region mod hardware before shipping it?

The region mod kit is a flat cable with pins that stick and is easy to remove or put. Since Oppo wont take ownership of the kit I suppose thats the right thing to do.

I know, I use on too. :)

but what if it is "repaired" and returned but the region mod kit fails to come on?

Pretty decent of Oppo to ask for the player to be sent for repair. Think you should do it. Im sure that once fixed you wont have any more issues. Go for it.

Sud, what is the model of the player. Also did you order the mod kit from ebay us? I hav ordered bdp_95 and usb mod kit from ebay us. So am asking.

Definitely a risk, but oppo wont test with the mod kit on.

I bought one from bluraychip.dk.

I realized today that I am facing a similar issue with my Wii. The remote buttons are working but the mouse pointer doesn't work! I have tried reconnecting, and changing batteries :(

On further thinking, I understand what Venkat and gobble are saying. Frankly, the power on is not such a big problem by itself as I can always walk upto the player and put it on. The fact that the region mod has stopped working is the bigger issue. Even if I send it to the US, it could be possible the region mod might again fail.

Sudheer
Perhaps you should mail blueraychip.dk saying their unit is not working and see the response?
