Asus Xonar Essence ST soundcard - experience

Besides spending $$$ on a sound card that runs of dirty SMPS does not make sense to me
I suppose that this is just one of the reasons why one would spend $$$ on a sound card.

Taking the same length of road, consider the intrusion of road noise and ride experienced driving a Santro compared to that experienced when driving an Accord. Same road: different engineering.

Does this Kernal Streaming work with only few sound cards? I tried and I'm getting the following error "Unrecoverable playback error: KS output error: error opening device" . I'm using Creative XMod USB device. Please help.

Guys, i want to buy this card! Unfortunately it's not available here in new mumbai so what about mumbai guys?
Any shop selling there? please let me know! :)

Looks like Mumbai is very backwards and primitive ... What no Asus Xonar sound card?!!! :ohyeah: ;)

Is it short supply or EOL product or what?

Hi Everybody,
My quest for a better source ended today. Since the Pune HFV meet last December (got to audition Beresford Caiman DAC), I knew DAC will suit my requirements, and started searching for DACs around price band of 10-15k. After lot of reading on web, including our fellow member SHANTI's posts (no audition!) finally settled for Asus Xonar Essence ST soundcard.

Installed the card with stock drivers and played my favourite mp3 tracks with VLC player (didn't play audio CD deliberately). I hoped that the card is good enough that it can make mp3s sound good. And result? >> I found moderately better SQ than my DVDP playing the mp3 :-( !!!. The bass was lesser but with better body, details were better across the whole spectrum, but I couldn't figure what was all the fuss about, I mean the rave reviews on web. So did I plonk down 9.5k (+ another 9k for PC) for marginal improvement?

The advice that foobar with kernal streaming option should be used with this card, was known to me, however I wanted to start out with stock drivers from Asus-CD and a regular player like VLC as a safe option. Having played the PC for close to 3 days without any hiccups I was assured that the "wintel" pc and the card are basically happy together, and now's the time to tread into little risky waters (Kernel streaming may not work smoothly on some PCs, say reports on web)

Downloaded foobar player along with Kernel streaming dll file >> followed the instructions for installtion of both >> tweaked the settings in Asus Xonar control panel as per tips on web >> with little anxiety in heart clicked the play button in foobar >> *** WOW ***.

The mp3 "Portabello belle" (Dire straits) sounded so full of life. The moment the song finished I rushed for the Dire straits Debut album audio CD >> Skipped directly to track 2 (Water of love) >> *** SPEECHLESS ***.

To be fair, part credit for "SPEECHLESS" effect also goes to Usher V-601 bookshelf speakers and my other new aquisition, the Adcom GFA 545 MkII power amp (my NAD C320 integrated amp served as pre-amp).

I knew I've hit a significant landmark in my audio-journey when my 16 yr old son said after hearing the same, "dad now your system sounds better than my headphones" (not surprisingly, he is also fan of Dire straits, and ridiculed me often that his 800 bucks sony headphones sounded better than my 45k system. The poor Usher's had to take blame for a average source like DVDP). OTOH My "better half", having noticed my "speechless looks" seemed to enquire "what's the fuss all about? Well... I've learned to ignore that.

There are still better days ahead. The card is knwon to improve after approx 100 hrs of burn in. BTW the box-pack of the card ought to have this notice printed in bold >> IMPORTANT: DON'T EVER THINK OF USING THIS CARD WITHOUT FOOBAR & KERNEL STREAMING OPTION.

I don't foresee myself touching wallet for a long time.
And yes, I've got to stay away from -wallet breaking- "opportunities" to audition mega-buck systems :-)

Regds,
Sonosphere
Thanks for the sugestions......

I have recently installed this sound card (ASUS Xonar Essence STX) & used foober/ kernel streaming options. This resulted very good sound out off very ordinary PC speakers.

Now, I'm looking for suitable Integrated Amp. + Bookshelf Speakers. I have short listed (1) NAD 316BEE / Denon PMA 510AE 2) Paradigm Titan Monitors /PSB Image B / Quad 11L.

If experience people could suggest right combination, then this will be close to AUDIOPHILE ste-up.

Thanks to all members........I'm new to this blog.

Thanks for your comments on Asus Xonar StX card. I am also looking forward to build my music hifi pc with this card. Did anyone try out the card with the normal stereo amp like NAD or Rotel + Tower speakers ? Just wonder how is the sound on them ?? ... I see a lot people praising the sound on headphones but there are no reviews of SQ on Amp + Speaker setup .

thanks,

thanks,

I did use the analogue outs of the STX with my amp & speakers.

My comments in post #87 in this thread and here(post #38 on the page linked to) refer to my experience of using the analogue outs of the Xonar STX with a NAD c326BEE amp and PSB Image B6 speakers.

I'm currently using the coaxial digital-out of the STX with a Rega DAC.

I installed Lilith recently. It is "Analog" sounding player compared to Foobar. Makes 70's rock songs sound stronger /grittier. I have started re-listening to my rock favorites with this player. Thanks Spiro for making this discovery!

BTW it really foxes me that one software player can change the sonic character so much (the "lossless" bits in all SW players ought to sound the same, right?). The change is so dramatic as if I had modded some electronics /opamps within the DAC.

Update:
I've recently installed a software media player called "Final Media Player" (FLV, MP4, 3GP, VOB, WMV Player - Final Media Player). The SQ of this player surprised me, in similar way as in above quote. First of all a disclaimer: The "surprising" results I describe may be a result of synergy with my pwr-amp & speakers. AND in comparison to Foobar player. A amp-speaker combo weak on treble-end details and bass-end may not sound as good.

Observations:
Tonal balance: Remained neutral (I've mentioned earlier in this thread that my opamps have been changed)

Details: Significant improvement ALL across the freq range. Most imp part is that the attack transient's have improved. My Usher's sound more like the fast Adam A7's now. Pardon this overused cliche in audiophilia>> It feels as if a veil has been lifted from speakers.

Dynamics: Overall loudness remains the same, however there is more "silence" between the sounds (some call it "blackness" /"blacker" background) hence it sounds more dynamic than earlier.

Treble: Hi-end extension remains almost same, however the thin sounds like string sections in distant background now have some texture. And yes, I hear many faint sounds /fx now, that were unheard in mix earlier.

Mids: Same proportion but more texture.

Bass: Aaahhh! I hear the attack-transients of bass-string plucks clearly now. Bass sustain notes have more texture. Kick-drum is moderately better.

Comparisons:
The Lilith player mentioned in quote above has gritty /thick sound, but at cost of details. The Foobar SQ now feels like soft-focus version of this Final Media player.

Considering my cdp exposure so far, this SQ is approx equivalent to CDP's in 25k range. ...it really foxes me that one software player can change the sonic character so much

I would urge other members (especially Xonar owners) to try this player and post their experience here. (Oh BTW this player is really basic in terms of features... no playlist no skins etc.)

Regds,

I installed this player and tried to play a flac file but no sound.. went into setup but no option to select sound card output like we have in foobar.. i guess thats y no sound.. any idea how to configure it.?

Primary thoughts-

Its open sounding & detailed player.I am not able to add files(playlist).
MP3 sound clean(no hiss) & fuller.Soundstage is wide.Good background details(better than foobar).

It goes to default sound device.Whenever I open new window, audio stops playing.Song is played in background without audio.

Update-Final MP is most detailed music sw.I can hear some new background instruments very well. The instrument presentation is rich & not thin.Noise level is low too.Music PC owner should try this one & post their experience.
I cant add songs though.

Well it installs a lot of junkware/spyware. Anyone installing be careful to deselect those options.

For me installation hangs in the middle (I've deselected Yahoo toolbar).

Well I gave up and cancelled installation.

@spirovious - Can you check Foobar with these presets Foobar2000 equalizer presets.

I have "Rock" from Equalizer and also noise sharpening is at 200% and to me this gives a lot of details (unheard of with Foobar previously).

Just want to know how Foobar with these settings compares to FMP. Will try to install it again... but I don't like s/w that insists on loading your system with unwanted toolbars, crapware and spyware... and then refuses to install if they are not selected.

Dear Sonosphere,

You have changed or swaped the 'opamps' on Xonar Sound Card? I would like to know the detail procedure. I would like to try on this.
