Hi ALL,

I am back from US and I want to share something with you all, When I was in US I was accessing Netflix.(Since Netflix provides a month of subscription free I took one to see how good it is.) Since I was kinda too busy there I did not want to start any TV series that was serious in terms of story and plot. I gave a shot to Prison Break Season 3 and a TV series called Flash-point.

To my surprise both the TV series turned out to be pretty decent, and held my interest through out. But alas obviously I could not complete and I had to come back.

Ironically one thing I did miss here of US was Netflix .... :D :D, believe me I have every kind of media player and android player where in I can access/stream media off internet or my NAS, but Netflix for some reason really really seemed convenient, specially when accessed from a Media player like WD TV Live. Which I bought (the latest 2013 model) from US. Its just a couple of clicks before you start to stream, that too in proper 720p HD, with subs and the application starts off your TV series (or movie) from exactly the point you left off. (And it can track multiple TV series and movies you watch)

Anyway here in India I was kinda missing Netflix so did a google, "Netflix in India", hoping there would be some news of their services been extended in India. Instead to my surprise I found that there are ways to access Netflix from India as well. There are services that provide you VPN with a DNS entry that makes your network appear as if in US. Which makes any US only service accessible in India (yes not only Netflix, I was able to access VUDU, HULU and Amazon Prime Instant Video as well)

Couple of reviews later I found "Unblock-Us - smarter faster VPN" to be reliable and since they were also providing a free 7 day trial I decided to give it a shot, plus my subscription with nexflix free one month also had couple of days left.

After registration, all you need to do it to entrer the DNS ip they provide to either your windows machine or better your router configuration, the adv here is that if you put the DNS entry in your router all devices connected can take advantage. I did the same and vola!! in seconds netflix opened in my browser and my WD TV Live media player as well.

I have an 8mbps connection so streaming bandwidth was not a problem, all I wanted to see was how good it looks on my HDTV and how good the application streams. I was amazed by not only did netflix provide 1080p streaming, it also had 5.1 DD. Since WD TV Live had
DD THD Bit streaming I was able to see DD+ on my AVR and the quality of streaming was simply gorgeous. I was able to stream full 1080p without any hiccup from WD TV. Netflix plays episodes one after the other without human intervention, unless you want to stop, you just have to sit back and keep watching episodes after episodes without touching the remote. After 5,6 continuous episodes Netflix asks by a pop up, "Are you still watching xyz series" with yes or no. This is I guess so that just in case you fell asleep, the app's gonna keep playing the entire series, to prevent this and to confirm if some one is still sitting watching, it provides this pop up, neat if you ask me.

Anyway I completed Prosion Break S03 and 4,5 episodes of FlashPoint. Will update my experience in TV thread.

Mean time if anyone is interested in this route feel free to ask any question. I just wanted to share my this experience.

BTW the VPN services is 5 USD a month plus Netflix is 7 USD so if we do decide to take this route we have like 12 USD/Month ~ 680 to 700/Month.
for unlimited streaming of 1000s of TV series and Movies in full 1080p HD with 5.1 DD sound ......, what do people say .....worth..??!!!

Regards
Sammy

Yes Sam I am using the Netflix service close to an year now using the VPN route. I do not have the Netflix account but I got my brother's so I access his a/c and he pays the subscription monthly :ohyeah:

Thanks

Re: Netflix, my experience...amazing service!!! can be accessed from INDIA as well..:

Also we should try to integrate this VPN+Netflix with the XBMC that would be awesome. Right now I come out of XBMC and login to VPN and then connect to the Netflix a/c. There is a inbuilt plugin of Netflix for XBMC but this works directly and not thru VPN a/c. Hence we should try and attempt to integrate this into XBMC. By the way I use the free VPN a/c and not the paid service and I am able to get good streaming for DVD quality videos. If the integration works will go for the paid VPN as then I can get the 720p/1080p quality movies over streaming. I have the 10mbps unlimited broadband connection and can go for the same :clapping:

Re: Netflix, my experience...amazing service!!! can be accessed from INDIA as well..:

Yes Netflix with XBMC will be something .... but with me the inbuilt app on WD TV Live really really works great. The interface is good looking and the features provided are perfect and it takes like 10 seconds to switch on the Media PLayer and start streaming from Netflix.
XBMC on my HTPC obviously takes much longer, so I think I will use it for only movies, OR for those TV series which are not available on Netflix. (Like Games of Thrones)

BTW, you said that you are using your brothers account, so this means that one account can be used at multiple places....., thats strange (or careless of netflix, if I may put it that way...) .... This for me means that two people can share the cost and enjoy the service. or may be three as well. ,,.. :-)
wow ...anyone interested in trying that out ..... :D

Re: Netflix, my experience...amazing service!!! can be accessed from INDIA as well..:

No Sam I use his a/c login details to access the service, so obviously Netflix does not restrict it . Its not kind of sharing the cost :ohyeah:

Re: Netflix, my experience...amazing service!!! can be accessed from INDIA as well..:

which connection are these ? What is the costing for them ?:

I use a local broadband provider here in Bangalore and the charges are 10mbps unlimited (no FUP limit) for 1120/- including tax.

Thanks

I used to have Airtel earlier at 4mbps for 2000+tax with unlimited (with FUP of 75gb). The service was good with almost zero downtime. But the cost was very high hence shifted to this local provider a year back and the service is ok not so great as they use the local cable walla type hanging the cable over buildings. So if there is huge rain and the disruption of service as the cable gets cut and they will take atleast an hour or two to restore the service. But I am ok to live with this service as the cost overrides all other things:ohyeah: The torrents sometimes are being purposefully slowed by the provider recently and I get anywhere between 4 to 5mpbs speed for torrents. But for all others I get consistently 9 to 9.5 mbps.

Thanks

Airtel Broadband, 175 GB FUP ..... 2200/Month (this has increased to 2500 now I guess on their website, but I still am paying 2200)

No No, you didnt get me, if one login ID can be used by multiple people, we can create one account used by 3 and share that cost of one account. 7USD/3 per month in case of Netflix .... :-)

Sam I think you do this way as Netflix server just checks whether you are in US if yes then it will allow you to login with the credentials thats it. They are only checking the IP address with the location and it should be in US. Hence the same login ID multiple people can use (ofcourse one at a time) with the VPN a/c based out of US.

Thanks

Re: Netflix, my experience...amazing service!!! can be accessed from INDIA as well..:

I am interested in watching netflix and sharing cost of account if others are interested. Was regular user till last year, but stopped as costs went up and was not getting time to watch.Only thing to watch out for is feasibility and will it work on multiple logins at a given time. As i remembers, once you connect and start using, it saves the connection mode and details of the device you are using to connect.

The solution to our situation is coming...

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/04/netflix-subscription/

http://bgr.com/2013/04/22/netflix-price-increase-rumor-457071/

Family account for netflix which can be shared between family and 4 people can stream simultaneously at any given time for a fee of 11.99 per month. If shared between 4 people will just come to 3$ per head which is pretty cheap.

Another change :

Update:

If you want to do netflix trial or subscription and watch it for free on your PC without buying any VPN service, please try the below option for PC, it's working well.

http://thenextweb.com/media/2012/11...tflix-pandora-hulu-and-rdio-from-any-country/

I am using the same currently to listen to Pandora and check Netflix on my pc.

Even I have tried with "Hotspot Shield "hotspotshield and it work very nicely with Netflix and pandora etc.

And @sam9s; Can you please elaborate in details how and where did you entered the DNS and IP values in router itself.Coz I also wish to run it on my WD Live..

Re: Netflix, my experience...amazing service!!! can be accessed from INDIA as well..:

OK I checked in the streaming plans and I do see a 12 USD 4 devices plans listed there. The 8 USD plans is limited to two devices, so I am ready to experiment on this free account, to see if it works with two users logged in simultaneously and can stream independently.

@Dushie the solution you shares is already active there I guess. (Netflix Introduces User Profiles To Improve Account Sharing) I can create profiles for the users who are sharing the account and when I log in Netflix asks who is watching and loads the preferences of the users accordingly, ..........neat if you ask me.

What I have done is created a guest account (profile) and a password for this free account. If anyone is willing to test, I can share the password. When you login and Netflix asks who is watching, make sure you choose GUEST and not "samret". and try to stream any show/movie. We will then see if the account stores the user preferences according to the profile that has logged in.

If this works we can share the cost (if more then 2 people are interested, then we can go for that 12 usd plan divided by 4 which would be 3 USD, just 150-200 rs, making it very attractive ......

Any one interested to perform this test ....@Dushie, may be you ....let me know. I will share the password and we can try logging and streaming immediately and simultaneously so see how this works ......

Let me know

Regards
Sammy

Yes why not ..... if you have a linksys router, you go in to the admin page by putting http://192.168.0.1/ in to the browser, on the first page itself scroll down to see DNS entries. refer image ..

thats where we put the DNS entries....

Re: Netflix, my experience...amazing service!!! can be accessed from INDIA as well..:

^^ Is it a router cum modem from MTNL ..???

Re: Netflix, my experience...amazing service!!! can be accessed from INDIA as well..:

Apologies for a late reply .... Router cum Modem are a bit tricky, specially in your case as its an unconventional product. I can only suggest to try changing the Primary and Secondary DNS and see if that works ...... but make sure you note down the original entries that I see in your snapshot. ......
