hello friends :) i have just bought a new 5.1 system and need a blu ray player to complement it :) my system right now consists of a marantz sr5007 avr, kef kht1505gb 5.1 system, tata sky hd and a lg 32 inch led full hd television. i stay in mumbai so it will be helpful if anyone helps me where i can buy it for cheap and also where i can rent good blu ray movies from and also the cost of renting :) thanks alot!

If you are fine with a Region C coding, Sony BDP S-490 is an excellent player. It will cost you around 9k (with two 3D titles, Tintin & MIB3 plus one 3D spec) is available with most of the retailers. Official one available at ebay for around 8k, but some have complained that the dealer not providing the 3D spec (compatible with Sony TV). If you consider the value of the 2 titles & the spec, the cost of the player comes down to 5-6k, which is really a good price.

But if you don't want the freebies, there are other options close to 6k from Pana and Philips apart from Sony & LG. Not sure about the quality though.

Renting BDs is possible through moviemart (online) or there are few DVD shops which rents them, though the range might be an issue. Usually costs between 50-100 bucks per movie.

Apart from Sony 490 you can also check Pioneer BDP 150 and Panasonic DMP BDT 220.

Pioneer BDP seems to be available in India in Grey Market and Panasonic dmp dbt 220 has to be imported.

One good thing about Pana BDP is that it can be made region free (for details please refer BDT220 review thread by Kix). The major problem is that it is not available in India since last Sep/Oct and even is US is hardly available, as it is being replaced with the new BDT230. In India Pana has only one low spec (2D) model available.

Thank you all for replying :) can anyone explain what region free is? I m totally new to this hi Fi world and would appreciate a little help :) thank you again

Please google for region coding of DVDs and Blu rays. You'll get sufficient info to keep you busy for few hours. Anyway, considering that we are controlled by this region lock thing we can play only the DVDs which are suppose to be retailed in the region. But as you know, we as a human nature have a tendency to break away from all such controls, have figured out ways and means to become region free, so that we can play all DVDs and Blu ray movies from all over the world. Currently India falls under DVD region -5 and BD region C. So if you don't watch many imported original movies, this codes has no impact on you.

BTW, DVD region free is either available now in most players off the shelf or can be easily achieved but BD region free is tough to do, and needs special hardware or software modification. Making Pana region free is easy, as it can be done via software mode (please refer the thread by Kix on BDT220)

My honest opinion - get the Panasonic DMP-BDT220 or 230. Import via Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk. The landed price including shipping and customs will be close to Rs. 13,000.

Then get the region free firmware and make it region free. You will have to donate 30 + paypal charges to the website.

Folks,
Currently BDT220 is available in ebay.in but looks like it is imported from Region A country. Even if it can be made region free through firmware, I am concerned about the required power converter, particularly 60hz? Can anyone suggest a converter of 220V/50hz to 110V/60Hz?

Hi Buddy ,

First a fall, congratz on ur purchase... :clapping:

My suggestions are
Pioneer 150 cost around 7-8K in grey market.
Panasonic BDP-230 -11K with 1 yr warranty
Sony BDP 490 under 10K

Regarding your region free doubt. I have a question. How ur gonna buy ur blu ray disc ? original or pirated or imported ?

Keep it simple for blu ray codes
1. NA & SA - Region A
2. Europe and UK - Region B
3. Asia pacific & ME - Region C

As manzb told, you can consider panny to make it region free, because u ll never have the problem of getting a regional error. I suffered tat many times and got irritated

You can go with model 230 but the region free firmware is not yet available.

:

Region A covers some Asian countries too. Eastern and southeastern countries like Thailand, Singapore, Japan Taiwan Korea etc are in region A. Area code "GA" affixed after model BDT-DMP220 indicates region A but 220 volts player meant for Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam. The player available at Ebay.in for Rs. 10900/ is the same, i.e. "GA"
Regards

The Panasonic Blu Ray player listed on eBay was listed as 110V and before buying it I called to seller to confirm if it 110 Volts, he said "No, it is 220 V after that he revised the listing but the color system is still NTSC so not sure if it is Region A or C. Asked to seller via eBay message but heard nothing from him yet.

Which one among all of these will have the best possible quality audio as i intend to have just one machine for CD, DVD and BD....

I was told oppo 103 is the one but why spend 499 + duty + transport charges if anything under 12k (or for that matter under 15k) suffices. And to top it all, if it can has a usb socket for pendrives...nothing like it.

Friends...possible? or i am just dreaming....?

It is 220V Region A and switchable between NTSC and PAL. Even if you do not change color system setting to PAL, I think modern TVs do this job automatically and seamlessly.

What is the difference between Sony BDP S490 & S4100 ?
How is Samsung BD-F6500? It has inbuilt WiFi.
I am currently using LG BD550 and thinking of upgrading to a 3d one. Offer on Sony is good. Does Sony play almost all formats via external HDD?

I like sony for that matter as it plays DVD and BD with slight scratches smoothly .... Panny I have seen failed to play such DVD / BD. Could be just my experience though .

A beautiful, well-constructed speaker with class-leading soundstage, imaging and bass that is fast, deep, and precise.
