new blu ray player under 12k

Pioneer model, most probably are grey market items. His requirement is that it shall not be grey. I will gonwith Sony 4100 or Pana 230. Sony can be made region free for dvd easily if not factory made region free for dvd.

Thanks all.

I got a deal for Pioneer BDP 450 all region player with one year warranty for 16K.

Very happy with the picture quality. Tested with my region A blu ray and region 1 DVDs'. Very impressed with the upconversion of the DVDs' especially the reference grade ones. Not too particular about the lack of inbuilt wifi and lesser features compared to Sony/Samsung.

Was very disappointed with the availability of players and was about to settle with a local market region C/5 BD player and an additional all region DVD player. Luckily checked out this company which does home theater distribution and installation.

Congratulations! Lucky you.:clapping:

[*]Blu ray region C should be ok as I plan to get discs locally in India.

:)

For Hollywood movie blu rays consider buying from amazon.uk. Often it is cheaper than India. Price in check out will be lower than that on the product page on account of refund of VAT.

When I was looking for the BR player, called up many home theater suppliers/installers. Got various offers for both US region locked as well as region free. 'Home Theater Solutions' in T Nagar, Chennai offered 16k for the BDP 450 region free if I buy in the next day or two. The player is marked as region C/3 on the back but is actually region free. Maybe that marking is for legal purposes. It also appears that this player is made in Japan for export use only.

You could call up all the home theater folks in BLR and find out. If you call the typical electronics chains like Croma, Viveks, Reliance Digital etc, you will get only India market, mainstream region C/5 players or sometimes region C/all.

:)

Had called up the ebay dealer mentioned. At that time he offered BDP 150 region A/1 for around 12K and BDP 450 region A/1 for around 17 I think.
Warranty was only 3 months dealer and not Pioneer. Even if you meet the dealer directly, the price is same without discounts. Check with the ebay dealer, the item seems to be a region locked player. Same with region free will be more.

I opted for this as it was region free, price was good and 1 year warranty.
Looks like a sudden and drastic price drop.

@maheshtr,

The Pioneer BDP-450 is available from official Pioneer dealer in Mumbai for Rs. 20,000,which is locked to region C, i.e. A and B region blu-ray disc not playable. No discounts. And the same is available in Lamington road gray market for Rs.12,000 which according to them was region free, which I doubt. These rates are two months old. Just for your info.

Please be careful. Most people do not understand the term "region free". They claim it but you may be disappointed later.

Be careful with "Region free". Typically, region free means for DVD's and Zone free for Blu rays. If confused, ask clearly if the player will play blu rays from all regions. If you can audition and if you have different zone disks carry them with you to verify their claims.

For region/zone compatibility, don't go by the markings on the box or backside of the player. The region free player I bought had zone/region marking probably for legal reasons (It came as a region free and not made). As other members have suggested, best way is to take a set of DVD/BDs and check.

For region free BD player: As stated above, do not go by mere word of mouth of the salesman.

- 80% of the salesmen do not know what region free means. They will look puzzled at you and even say "Yes, it is region free"
- 19% of the salesmen think that what you are asking is "whether the player will play discs purchased in this country" and will answer "Yes" (and they are right in their frame)
- The 1% knowledgeable will answer correctly

Blu-ray region code implementation is much different that the way it was done for DVD. In the DVD it was simple. With DVD, the entire disc was assigned a region code. All titles on a disc were assigned the same region code which could easily be read from the Control Data and Video Manager file. With Blu-ray, however, it is possible to set region codes for each individual title on the disc. The region code instructions are contained in the navigational playlists of the title. This region code implementation gives authors flexibility when determining how a disc will behave in players from each region. Region coding can also be managed through the BD-J programming language.

So while simple remote hacks work for a DVD Player (DVDP), it is not easy to break the region code in BD. Region code in BDP can be broken only by hardware modification kit or in some cases by firmware update. Chances are, if you go to any generic shop and ask for a region free BDP, you will not get one, whereas the same shop will be able to sell you a region free DVDP. But there are specific shops which sell modded region free BDPs.

So the advice above is correct: carry with you a mix of BDs and DVDs of different region and test.

You should read the following article that I have posted: http://www.hifivision.com/blu-ray-d...s/47477-quest-region-free-blu-ray-player.html.

Granted that I do not claim to know a lot, but what I have said is based on experience.

Can you please throw some light on " BD-J programming language". Since I am a programmer by profession, just curious to know.....

Actual Genuine Pioneer Blu ray BDP 450 comes with Code C for DVD and 5 for blu ray. I recently bought one at Max electronics Alandur. He gave it at a price of 19600 and MRP was 20000. Truly satisfied and highly satisfied with the product. I bought one from Grand Cinemas for 12500 initially and returned it back to him as he gave a grey product with code 3 and A. Which seems to be a very bad quality product and Pioneer India says they are made with some other processor and that is the reason why its not fast or responsive. Now that I got this one I am very happy and its much better and fast compared to the grey products and plays almost all Blu Rays.

The region coding for BDs and DVDs is exactly reverse of what you mentioned. The player will be region C for BD and region 5 for DVD.

unable to find panasonic bd 230 player anywhere here, wondering if should order it from uk amazon website, costs around 13k, and has region B!!!
