raspberry pi 2 as media player

I bought a rpi3 to be used as a media player/music player/automation server. Installed Librelec and tried watching the first movie and it was very choppy and unwatchable. Am I keeping too much hopes on the rpi?

1. The connection from rpi to NAS is via wifi (can change to ethernet) but defeats the use case.
2. The file is a 12 gb one with dtdhdma and I disabled passthru, can enable it, but wanted to test it.
3. The SD card is from my old phone and is a class 4, can upgrade to a class 10, but I believe the read rates are what matters while streaming movies and not write rates.

As this is not my regular media player, just want to test the limits of what it can do by itself with very little investment. So any advise?
Try wired connection and let us know your impressions.

Something wrong for sure.

Enable GL Driver in raspi-config options. Also, increase memory from 64 MB (I run at 64 MB) and check.

Sudo raspi-config > Advanced Options via SSH.

Try OpenELEC image... or simply install Raspbian and access NAS and play. I run Raspbian... but don't use the Pi for playback. I use an i7 HTPC.

But the Pi should handle without issues.

PS: I use ethernet, class 10 Samsung card, and all HDD/media is externally powered and not drawing any power from the Pi. Also, Pi 3 needs 5V 2.5A power supply.

Whats the bitrate of your 12 GB file? Download a small program called mediainfo, open the file via mediainfo and see what the total bitrate of the file is.......is this wifi n or AC you are on?

Also I would still try to run the same movie via a USB pen drive and see rather than SD card

The movie is running off my Synology NAS, so the SD card or USB doesnt matter.

I checked Ethernet, but immediately got the low power symbol so switched back to wireless. The wireless is N300 and is around 15 ft away. Chromecast works fine at the same distance.

Its currently powered by a Mi 16000 mah power bank which is rated at 2.1A. Unfortunately, dont have a usb charger of 2.5A. I have one of 2A and one of 4A (which I guess may fry it).

Actually amp can be more, it is the voltage that will fry. It will only draw what is needed in case of increased amp. So give it a try with the 4A, but make sure its 5V.

Question still remains the same what is the total birate of your 12 GB file even if its running off from NAS?

The bit rate is 15mbps. Moved to ether net worked fine. But it's still behaving strange as occasionally I get the rainbow square and then goes off on its own. This is when I used my oneplus 3 dash charger which is rated at 4A. Switching to powerbank worked for sometime, but do face a freeze and then the only option is to restart.
Checking system settings show only 28mb free space from 16gb. So I guess I need to format and reload OS.

Probably need to expand file system, check https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/raspi-config.md.

Also, rainbow colors indicate less power to the device, try to get hold of a 5V 2.5-3A power supply.

Does not look like a bandwidth issue, and yes as regeHA said that rainbow issue is noted to be a power issue, provide a 3A charger, if its a local charger then anyhow it must be giving less than what its rated, so try a 3A charger and see.

Would like to try rpi 3.Can anybody point to the correct product on Amazon. Apart from the board what extra do you need to. Set up a streamer cum media player.

There are starter kits available on amazon which include the board itself, power adapter, case, etc. Some kits also have heat sinks.

Can you suggest one? The ones I check in amazon seem crappy or too expensive.

The starter kit is a good idea, but you would not need it.

It's overpriced, but I would buy the original power supply STONTRONICS T5875DV Official 2.5A 5.1V Power Supply designed for use with the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, UK/EURO/USA/AUS - Buy STONTRONICS T5875DV Official 2.5A 5.1V Power Supply designed for use with the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B, UK/EURO/USA/AUS Online a. I am using the same one with my Raspberry Pi 3.

Even for my Raspberry Pi 2 I bought a nearly Rs. 600 Sony mobile charger, but it has been absolutely worth it as it is running 24 x 7 from November last year.

Search in Amazon, lots of choices, simply go for the cheapest one.

You will also need a power supply and microSD card to even get the Pi started.

Optionally you will need cables for ethernet and HDMI, and a case for the Pi itself.

Once your power issues are sorted, just for the sake of it, try changing the OS to OpenELEC or OSMC. Somehow the stuttering should not happen when you run a 15Gb file via ethernet.

Solved the issue. Changed the cable of the charger and replaced it with another. Formatted the SD card and installed Openelec. Watched the movie again, no issues. Watched another movie with 25 mbps bitrate and no issues. Now wondering what do I do with my HTPC :)

I would like to use raspberry pi 2 as media player, but I am not conversant with micro-controllers or software. However, I do have fair basic knowledge of electronic circuits, components, soldering etc.
I would like to know if I can use the kits available to assemble and use it as desired.

You don't really need to assemble anything for the Raspberry Pi, all you need is to burn the image on a microSD card. The image acts as the operating system and offers the desired functionality/usage.
