Dear Experts,
I am planning to setup a basic home theater to connect to my 50" Panasonic Plasma. My initial budget is 30k. (Just got married, hope that makes sense).

My usage:
1. HD Movies & TV series (mainly downloaded) and a small portion of Blurays (yet to buy a player, considering a PS3 instead to play some racing)
2. Wife watches ZeeTv HD
3. Little bit of music. (Classic rock, R&B, regional music)

Now, if u see the attachments, I have these 2 huge teak wood speakers made by a company called BUSH and have an impedance of 8ohms and deliver 80W of sound (each)

Now, I have 2 options currently and here lies the confusion.
1. Reliance digital is selling off the last piece of the Denon 1312 XP 5.1 package which includes 5 speakers and 1 powered subwoofer for 25k after discount. MRP = 33900/-. If u buy this one, I wont be able to use the speakers I have. I know its a 2011 model, but I think for my usage, this would suffice for the next 3 years (minimum).

2. My friend who deals with high end audio equipment has one last piece of Denon AVR 1911 (again old model, I know)receiver which he offers for 20k. Now I can buy this, hook up my existing speakers for the time being and upgrade slowly later.

Which one do you all suggest?
Considering these old speakers, would they provide the kind of quality which the modern digital speakers do?
Should I just buy a tube amp and connect these speakers to my old Turntable and buy the Denon package instead?
I see Denon has the HtiB package of the 1312 and they sell the Denon AVr-1312 receiver alone for the same price. whats the difference?
My mind is just racing with questions and I am not sure what to do.

Please help me.

"modern digital speaker" !!?? I have no idea what r u talking about? Speaker are still driven by same old principal. I would suggest you to go with "Denon AVR 1911" which were offered for 20k.

+1 to Srisakat
There are no digital speakers. Its the same old principle and I don't see why the sound quality of an old speaker should degrade unless they have been damaged.

Pardon my ignorance. But what I meant was that since this speaker is old, would it perform as nicely as a new set of speakers which have the latest Integrated Circuits and resistors and capacitors (age might play a factor right ?)

AFAIK, the old speakers work like a charm.

Quick question, will the vocals be clearly audible on such huge speakers?

Even if the speakers are not playing well, it make sense to buy the AVR alone and upgrade slowly. HTiB is the last thing you want if you are in dilemma. For some, HTiB is the solution.

These speakers have old paper cone tweeters which are absolute now. So, sooner or later you have to upgrade. The 13K odd that you are saving can buy you 2 better speakers than those comes with a HTiB. Get yourself a Wharfedale or PSB around that price or a CA S30, JBL Control 1.

If the speakers kept abandoned not for long time then it is ok to go, first use them few hours with low volume, then gradually increase the volume to your comfort level. However, in case they are too old or kept unused for long time then you should check the crossover circuit inside the speakers with help of any professional to see if any components (like capacitors) need to be replaced or not.

Thanks. These speakers were last played in 2009 which is 4 years back.
I also have lost the cables for these speakers. Some genuine soul at home threw it away thinking it was some useless wires.

I have attached another image showing the female socket of the cables. I dont know what the pin is called. Tried a lot of searching on google but in Vain. I remember this adapter (male/female) was readily available in local electrical shops when i lived in Ooty.

Can someone help please?

Thanks,
Coplay

Does anyone know what this connection is called and if these connectors are still around.

can you post a pic with flash as the pin is hardly visible.

also last resort . bangalore has so many good audio DIY guys. open up the rear panel and let 2 wires out just like any other speaker.

Okay, I will post a better picture.
I also found the cables. I will post a pic of that as well.

I was actually thinking if someone could open up the rear and pull out two wires for easier connectivity in Bangalore. Do you have any personal suggestions?

Also, I want someone who can check the condition of these speakers because I feel one speaker's output is lower than the other. Maybe it could just be the amplifier.

Please share some contacts if you can. That would be great.

Hello all, requesting any contacts if possible to check one speaker.

the connector is called phillips type speaker connector. was all the vogue in the 50s-60s-70s. a way to ensure polarity is maintained (think of it as a speakon's grandfather)

i would suggest you go for 1911. the build quality of the denon 11 series is far superior to the 12 series (prone to failure) and the 1911 is a step over 13,15,16 series.

the speakers theat you get in the HTIB are worth the money you spend. if you buy the combo. you are suboptimising both the amp and the speakers. and you will be on an upgrade path (and money wasted when you try to resell)

my suggestion -- buy the 1911, i think it's a good price for brand new. (i have the 1611, and the 1911 was quite a bit better in every way).

your bush speakers are likely to be terrible. but maybe they will work as a stopgap and you do not push to hard with the Denon. my suggestions, buy a used pair of bookshelves and start with a 2.0 system. later you can buy a matching cc and surrounds, or buy a set of 3 matching front speakers (your surrounds do not really need to match you front speakers as much as a CC does.

keep a look out in classifieds, a lot of good stuff come up all the time.

to summarise. (this approach will save you money)

1. Buy the better HT amp
2. buy a pair of bookshelves
3. get the rest of your system together bit by bit.

of course you may be one of the guys who is happy with an HTiB. but (hopefully) you'd not be posting here, would you? :-)

I was in same dilemma few years back, and I chose HTIB - Onkyo HTS 3300. I was happy till date (2+ years) , but now getting a feeling that I am not experiencing what I wanted, especially with the stock speaker. Thinking of a matching front speaker pair which will go with Onkyo HTS3300. Suggestions?
For you, I will suggest to avoid HTIB and go with amp alone.

Purchase the Audiolab 6000A Integrated Amplifier at a special offer price.
