2011 Samsung Plasma 3D PS51D550

Thanks AmitJi.

I will check Plasmas tomorrow. One of the positive points of Plasma is Blacks. But in LCD, its a disappointment. I dont know about the ghosting problem in Plasma but in LCD, its too much. One of the reason I wont buy a LCD. Now I have decide between Plasma and LED.

I've heard that Panasonic's 3D is not so good as they are usually out of focus. Well, I can only test it and say. Any idea where i can demo Panasonic's TVs?

How good this TV is if you compare it with LG 47LX9500?

No comparisons really, LX9500 is a top of line LCD while the D550 is a mid range plasma.

Although D550 plasma will have an edge in viewing angle and less image bloom, lg will win in everything else.

Having said that i will also state that the top of the line plasma's from Samsung, Panasonic and LG will beat any LCD's hands down.

@Akhil,

Have you checked Panasonic 3D Plasma VT series? They are awsome.

At a price:), also VT series do have their own share of disadvantages.

Thanks AmitJi.

Full array local dimming LCD's will have full on and off blacks and contrast much better than any plasma but it is the blacks, contrast required in real time viewing specially when the scene involved many objects on screen LCD will loose, also there is major blooming in LCD will make faces glow and shadow details disappear.

You demo panasonic VT at any panasonic india showrooms, in india we have only the VT20 and not the VT25, no matter LCD or Plasma or even the mighty kuro will never ever have blacks like the phone you are using " GT-I9000":), cause once u see blacks in SAMOLED everything else looks grey.

Hahahaha.! Thats absolutely correct. After having Super AMOLED, everything really looks fake.! But its not only the screen bro, everything is excellent in this phone. :)

But what about the ghosting problem.? That is something which annoys me a lot. I have Samsung 24" Full HD monitor but it has too much ghosting issues. Will that be in Plasma? I suppose Plasma's black are better than LCD's. Am i right?

Plasmas wont do great in well lit or rooms having bright lights. Unless you are going with a pro black panel plasmas (if ever there are any). :rolleyes:

@Rajapraveen

Whats are the disadvantages of Panasonic Plasmas? Which top line Plasmas are better than LCDs? I saw the Panasonic site and there are only 2 Plasmas with 3D. I dont know if they are top line. Sepcs says THX certified. Have u demoed them?

What is local dimming? Pls put some light.. :) :)

@Kittu

My room is bright and well lit. Even with the curtains on its pretty much bright. :(

Galaxy S is a great phone and i have one as well.:)

Ghosting problem will be there in LCD specially if you watch from a dim lit or a dark environment , there will be lot of image blooming as well which will make u miss picture details.

Not all plasma's blacks are great but the top of the line plasma from Panasonic , samsung and LG have very good blacks and contrast, when talk about blacks and contrast i mean real time blacks and contrast,no matter what kind of content is played.

Top of the line LCD's with full array LED back lighting do have very good contrast and blacks when minimalistic contents are displayed.

All top of the line plasma from Samsung (6,7 and 8 series) ,panasonic(GT and VT), LG(PZ 9 series) are better than any LCD.

I have the V20 and the Samsung 6 series plasma but i find the samsung to have a much more clearer image than the v20 which i fell has little more noise and grain, but the V20 does have slightly better blacks than samsung but samsung has better contrast.

THX does not always mean it is the best, KURO does not have THX but is was the best plasma every produced to date.

If your room is bright and well lit then on side by side comparison LED lit LCD will look better and brighter, but if u don't mind little dull image but you want natural colors, image depth, details in proper film content(not animations) then you should but a plasma.

For me these new breed of plasma are very bright in dim light environment to an extent i have to tone down the settings so LCD's will give me a head ache.

Thanks for the link. Gave a real detailed n easy explaination. But after reading that and seeing the picture comparison, I am not liking the LED LCDs. Plasma picture quality is far better. Even with the local dimming, I dont find good picture quality of LEDs.

Earlier you said LG LX9500 is better than Samsung Plasma. What about Panasonic VT series Plasma? Which one is better? One plus point of LEDs is their width. They are really slim and looks beautiful. But whats the use of beauty if the picture quality is not good. :P

Any Idea how much VT series 50 inch will cost? My budget is 1 lac. :S

For me brightness is not everything. I like natural colours and good blacks. The picture quality should be like the comparison pic of Plasma in that link you posted earlier. And yes too much brightness gives me headache too.

Now I think I should wait a little more do more research then buy the TV. Let me have a look at 3D Plasmas tomorrow.

LX 9500 is definetly better than the mid range plasma both from samsung and Panasonic.

VT20 50" should cost you about 1.4 lakhs.

you cant go wrong with any top end plasma from samsung(6,7,8 series) , LG(9 series) or Panasonic(GT , VT series).

If i had the budget of 1 lakh then i will stretch it a bit(1.3 lakhs) and get the 60" LG PK950 plasma, trust me there is nothing like watching movies in a 60+ plasma. :)

The retail price of LX9500 is 200,000. Some offer going on and now the MRP is 149,000. After my hardcore bargaining I am getting LX9500 + TataSky HD + 50 DVD titles (which I dont want) + Adidas Tshirt in 99,000/-.

So If VT20 is 140,000, I think it will come down If i do my hardcore bargaining there also. :P

If you had a budget of 130,000 you will go for LG 60" Plasma. Why not VT20? Is it just the size or the quality is exceptionally better? My viewing distance is 11.6 feet. That is the reason I am not going above 47 - 50 inch. Or the 60 inch will also rock?

I will be surprised if Panny offers you discounts like LG.I think 50inch will do just fine. If your room size is much bigger than viewing distance ,60 will look fine , but if room size is marginally bigger then its an over kill. Room interiors also matter a lot . In small rooms if you just throw a large TV on the wall it will look ugly. So many things to consider. If you are going for plasma, try control the room lighting , u can use blinds or blackouts for curtains.

Thanks Kittu for the useful info. Let me just open a new thread as indilgo already quoted above and he is right. :)

VT 20 retails price is 1.7 lakhs , that 1.4 is the price after bargain.

But at that budget i will buy a 60" LG pk950 at 1.3 lakhs, which is THX certified and has amazing calibration and picture and color processing, this 60" also has great blacks.

If i have a budget of about 1.7-1.8 lakhs then i will buy the 64" samsung D8000 plasma which retails for about 2.4 lakhs and after bargaining i guess that price is attainable.I don't want to spend more than that for a 60+ inch TV and if Panasonic offers the VT30 63" in this price range and if it has a clean non noisy picture then i will definitely have a look at that as well.

I watch a 50" plasma from 6 feet and if i even extend my distance by one more meter i need the 60" cause for me 50" looks small.

Thanks for PK950 pricing.. looks interesting. And I confirm 64D8000 is available for around 1.7Lac.

I just checked - JUST Rs.49990 for 51D550 without any goodies... Its certainly a great price for me... Let me know if anyone is interested. We can bill from virtually any dealer in Bangalore, however need to be discrete as the Samsung sales person has to be kept hidden :)
