2025 mein SUB kuch badlega

The TBI sub purchase has been put on hold. Not sure if it’s the optimal solution for the Axiom 80.

In fact the general consensus among the experts I have spoken to is to not use a sub. :)

When Satyaki came home the other day to hear my system, he didn’t feel the bass was lacking at all. He felt its just that the bass presentation is different from that of a JBL.

So it’s now a wait n watch

Good Decision !!!

With my limited abilities in understanding sound, wanted to add- syncing sound from sub with an excellent pair of speakers would be difficult, even if done properly, it would be invading an audiophile expectation that something is missing. A major road block to enjoy music and triggering more anxiety.

Once I used to have a sub (built DIY from Kolkata- Digital acoustics) and then moved to a pure 2.0 Stereo. First few days I was upset and then started digging the clarity. Now I'm totally out from the mindset of using a sub.

However I have seen exception also. At fellow audiophile Bhaskar's place, Reethm Saadhna and the 15" sub (a pair) are happily married that it's almost disappeared and converged sound seems to come from Reethm only .

IME, sub will be required only if your main speakers roll-off around 125hz else not. Adding a sub in your speaker will cause overlap and interference making it a bit difficult to integrate only by listening. Measuring could help only if you have independed control on both the sub and main.

Just a suggestion, if possible, why not borrow a sub from someone to try and extrapolate the outcome to decide if you need one or not?

I would have loved to but I am not interested in subs from REL, SVS, Rhythmik and the like. In my mind these will definitely not work. The ones I am considering like NSMT, TBI, NNNN, Danley, etc are not available in India. So the buy has got to be an educated guess.

Imo, if you still are considering a sub, then changing the boxed Axiom speaker to an OB would be something you could consider in parallel. That way you can avoid the challenge of overlapping frequency from the sub and Axiom.

It’s a challenging task integrating a sub under 40hz territory.

However two 8” drivers with Fs under 25hz in PPSL or Ripole can do the job and keep up with Axioms speed / dynamics.

You should ask Devon Turnbull to make you one of those short throw but large subs :)

Visited his studio in Manhattan last year. He seems to be into interior designing too. The big 21” Fostex woofer was missing though.

That's nice. How did you find the sound ? His background is in creatives but he being a lifelong audiophile who is genuinely interested in the non mainstream side of audio has carved out a niche for himself in the space. He has deep connections in the underground Japanese audio side of things. I ran into him many years back by chance when he did an exhibition in Amsterdam. I was just walking past and saw it and walked in. Those days it was more of an art installation. Nowadays he seems to have taken it to the next level.

Was slated to meet him in my first week of arrival in NY but Covid got good hold of me and kept me bedridden for 10 days (and American grave seemed imminent).

However managed to visit his studio in last / fourth week of my stay and he was traveling at that time. The setup was simpler and sounded crisp and clean.

Sorry about a little digress from Prems post ….

What is the speaker setup? Some what resemble mine?

Ted Jordan, the designer of Axiom 80, used a MJ Acoustics sub for his listening at home. It’s his recommended sub. So I am assuming there is a good chance it will work well with the Axiom 80.

The model he used is from 2008 and that’s the same one I am trying to get my hands on. Failing which I will get a model from 2017 which has the same specs.

The sub uses a 10 inch doped paper cone driver in a sealed enclosure. Amp used is a 120 watt MOSFET amp. All controls are in analog domain.

Coming from the designer's own experience, you will not go wrong. I think it is the same gentleman ( tall older gentleman who said he is the designer..dont remember his name now ) I met in the EJ Jordan room at the Edinburgh audio show. One of the best sounds at the show. Devoid of any untoward hifi artefacts!

You must have met Colin. Ted Jordan passed away 6-7 years back. It was Colin who told me about the equipment Ted used at his home.

Ted Jordan is considered god by many. Even a genius like Yamamura went to Ted to get drivers designed for his horns.

Yes, I guess it was Colin. These people tread a different path and the results are amazing.
