A journey begins...

I doubt that I have ever seen such a happy relationship between man and speaker :)

You say that you don't take take the credit for your combination of equipment, but even being in the right place at the right time still needs the right choices to be made!

I was looking at the Tannoy site yesterday. I knew that they they went way back, and that the word once meant speaker like thermos means vacuum flask, but really nothing else about their history.

Amazed to find that those lovely boxes of yours would have been made in Scotland!

Hi,

I was looking at the Tannoy site yesterday. I knew that they they went way back, and that the word once meant speaker like thermos means vacuum flask, but really nothing else about their history.

These two sites have a wealth of information about all things Tannoy. There is also a Tannoy Yahoo group.

Continuing from where I left...

I have been looking around for other tube amplification options. I was recommended LM Audio (Line Magnetic Audio), supposedly it is the next big thing after Shindo and Leben. It is a chinese brand but it has created such waves that dealers like Tone Imports and Auditorium23 have grabbed its dealership. Whoever has heard it is almost lost for words and the general rumour is as soon as there is an official review out, the prices will go up big time. Worth checking out I suppose.

Formal review finally out here for Line Magnetic's WE 755 I based full range speakers. This is a field coil driver. Power for the field coil is provided by a rectifier based on 300B triode tube. Seems to be in the same ballpark class an Audio Note AN-E. Cabinet looks very classy.

I have been playing with some cartridges off late. Two interesting cartridges that caught my attention was an Ortofon SL-15e and a Denon DLA-100.

The Ortofon SL15e is supposedly a derivative of the SPU of the 60s in a nude form. The Denon DLA-100 is the anniversary edition of the DL-103. I bought this Denon because I was sceptical my own impressions of the DL-103pro which I have elaborated in this thread. As a small recap, the 103pro had left me unimpressed because it did not do anything special paired with the SME 3012 S2. But then it seemed quite odd because the whole world goes ga ga about 103. So this time around I wanted to try another 103 but a rather stock model which is built to tight tolerances and sold as Anniversary edition. The tonearm now was a 47 Labs RS-A1. The 47 Labs tonearm is a relatively high mass tonearm but is a unipivot. It has a very special sound to it which can be characterized as live, vibrant, bouncy and sparkling. This time the Denon on the 47 Labs tonearm sounded very different from my earlier experience. It had life and convincing dynamic swings. The tonal response was very even and whatever little boost in the mids came along was very negligible and rather entertaining. It turned out to be a very good match. The noise floor especially with noisy records were much much lower when compared to the 103pro. Clicks and pops were also lot less audible. Ok, it had its own share of weaknesses which we all know (refinement, extension etc) but it didnt bother all that much. Overall a very enjoyble cartridge with the right tonearm.

The Ortofon SL15e actually surprised me more. It is supposed to be an nuded SPU which means it should be darkish and romantic but it was not. It was rather very open, extended (especially in the highs) and clean sounding cart. It betters the Denon DLA-100 in these parameters actually, and also it was more refined and micro dynamic than the Denon. To me it is one heck of an all rounder. It had less balls than the Denon, so when one is listening to Floyd he would like the big sound of Denon where as Ella sounds more convincing on the Ortofon. Ortofon was also a very fast cartridge may be due to its very less output voltage of 0.1 mv which means very little coil inside.

Both the cartridges were ear openers for different reasons. Huge thanks to Santhosh for getting his Ortofon all the way to Singapore to let me listen through it.;)

The SL15 is a real sleeper. When it was introduced it was more expensive than the SPU. Some say that the EMT TSD15 was based on the Ortofon SL15 design .

I had my SL15 rebuilt by Soundsmiths with a fineline stylus and aluminium cantilever. It sounds great :).
