I would add speaker placement to the list. In fact I'd place it above everything else.

Thats something I missed to add(assumed thats the basic building block!), Have seen lot of people climbing up the upgrade ladder without knowing the potential of their equipment. In fact speaker placement with respect to listener's position is the most critical attribute to stereo.

Also MaSh try to use the mini-toslink cable from Chromecast audio instead of its 3.5mm output to your receiver or DAC if you haven't tried out. It sounds much better and clean and the best possible solution for streaming
