AMD Fusion APU

I have been using the GIGABYTE GA-E350N-USB3 AMD E-350 APU for few months now.
Using win7, tried wmc, xbmx, mpc-hc. mostly I run 720p rips, and didn't find any issues with them. It takes about 30% of cpu.

Few issues...
One can clearly hear the fan, in night. it is quite audible.
It struggles a little with some 1080p contents. The game of throne, was getting weird, when i try to FF. Normal playing, if i dont touch any controls, was fine. Avatar 1080p didn't have any such issues though.
Try putting a low RPM bigger fan in the cabinet, Smart fan should then kick in reduce processor fan speed, reducing noise. Connect the cabinet fan as exhaust rather than intake to create a negative pressure inside cabinet to create a better cooling effect. the weirdness will be due to type of coding (audio, video codecs, bitrates) not because of E350. I am on e7400 and HD4850 and it happens with me also sometimes when playing through XBMC

hi
I ve been testing out Asus E35M1-M deluxe and pro versions for the past 1 month. Can recommend the deluxe model although its higher priced than the pro (about 9400 vs 6200) its fanless and superquiet for HTPC uses. Be aware the deluxe does not have a VGA out- only HDMI & DVI. The Fusion platform itself is very good value on the HTPC front, much less as a computing platform. In my tests, it was able to play 6 full HD videos in multiple formats (.avi, mkv, flv, wmvHD etc) simultaneously without stuttering.
Asus Pro is around 6000 is also good value. Supports USB3 as well.

I forgot to add the difference in price is mainly because the deluxe is a fanless mini ITX form factor compared to microATX for the Pro. I found there is also a model E35M1-I with fan thats around Rs6000 which is a miniITX form factor

Any shops selling PRO version in india? could not find it on any of the online sites.

^^ theitdepot has it on their website. Theitdepot - Asus E35M1-M-PRO DDR3 AMD CPU On Board

You might need to call and confirm stock though. The items listed on the website are not always "in stock". Not to mention the fact that their prices are usually on the higher side.

The Pro is listed at 9200 + shipping. I thought you said it was retailing at 6200 and delux was retailing at 9400

^^ Um, not me, Vaibhav. That was Rosh.

He probably mentioned the price those boards are selling for, at the computer supplies shops. I've found that those prices (esp. in Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai etc.) are a quite a bit lesser than online prices.

so the fanless deluxe board is avilable in Bangalore SP road? I am a fan of the fanless board :ohyeah: Would love to pick it up in my next visit there.

Anyone confirm?

^^ Yup. Using these PC-in-a-small-box solutions will mean we'll have to get a DAC that does well with USB input, or spring for one of those USB-to-Coaxial converter doodads for use with other DACs.

These things have just the size (and for some people, convenience) advantage going for them.

Asus has launched a board running the E450 version of the Fusion platform: ASUS Adds E45M1-M PRO to its Fusion Motherboard Line-up | Maximum-Tech

E350 vs. E450 Comparison (not detailed): AnandTech - AMD Updates Brazos with E-450, E-300 and C-60 APUs

My MSI E350 Board replacement did not come through. They called yesterday and apologized for the delay, letting me know that the board is not available any more, and that they will give me a refund through the seller.

I think I'll pick up the Asus E35M1-M PRO as I originally planned to when I was building the Music PC. I don't think my application really needs the E450 boards.

After reading lot of articles on internet and multiple threads on HiFi Vision, I seemed to have formed some understanding on what are the possible options if one was to setup a good media experience in living room.

HTPC sure sounds a better option if one wants to use analog speakers like me.

I checked the prices of the components on almost all websites to see if I can make a great HTPC under 15k. I seem to be getting there.

Plus if one really takes the route of a Media Player like HiMedia (7k) + HDD (3K) + Sound Converter (DTA) (5K) - it comes at around same price.

Check this cart which I made at SMCInternational.in for HTPC:

Name SKU Price Quantity / Update Subtotal
Corsair DDR3 2GB VS2GB1333D3 G
crVS2GB1333D3 G 750.00
1,500.00
Msi E350IA-E45--AMD Fusion Platform
E350IA-E45 6,600.00
6,600.00
Cooler Master Elite 100
Cooler Master Elite 100 3,200.00
3,200.00
Lenovo Multimedia Remote with keyboard N5901
LenovoN5901 1,699.00
1,699.00
WD Caviar Green 1TB SATA Desktop Hard drive (WD10EARS)
WD10EARS 2,650.00
2,650.00
Subtotal: 15,649.00
Tax Total: 0.00

Total: 15,649.00

The only thing I can optimize is perhaps the Lenovo Keypad, but then again I will have to shell some money either on Wireless KB/Mouse or some IR Remote. BTW, can someone bless this rig?

One other thing which is luring me is the b-rad (wdlxtv) on WD TV. In 6k, one can get WDTV HD from SMCInternational and the use an existing external drive to get going. The 5.1 problem still doesn't get solved but I have been very impressed on the capabilities I saw for this on Youtube and other places

For people who are not aware of all the websites and options, I am listing down what I have learned from here or know (maybe some search crawler will pick up and bring people here) (No Particular order - search everywhere and choose where you get best deal):
1. Primeabgb.com - Has decent number of items but shipping costs are a bit on higher side
2. TheITDepot.com - More number of items on the website. You can get some exotic items like cable management solution etc. Shipping costs are reasonable. Packing is decent. They do charge you 2-3% for credit card payments (same as PrimeAbGb)
3. Ebay.in - No brainer
4. DigitalBay.co.in - Found this through here. Nice options for media frenizes
5. ICCWorld.com, ShopYourWorld.com, vpost - Buying in US and getting it delivered to India
6. SMCInternational.in - Was not aware of this, but looks like they have the cheapest items. The only place where Ebay.in sometimes topples these sites is on no credit card charge and options of availing EMI
7. Detna.com - If you looking to purchase HiMedia and other players
8. Deltapage.com - ITDepot sibling from Chennai
9. Other Websites: Computer Warehouse Online - Buy Computers, Computer Parts, Computer Accessories, Laptops and Electronics , Xtreamer india : Xtreamer is being sold in India by Xtreamer India
There are numerous others too like letsbuy but no one gives very competitive pricing. Please add more if you know so that we have pleothra of options when we look for components :)

I stay in Hyderabad, I have found that by getting stuff delivered at home typically saves me a good amount as the online costs are lower than CTC (Local IT Hub) and I also save on the time/petrol I spend going there. Shops located in Mumbai, Chennai - Cities with ports seem to offer best deals. Though I have seen some bangalore and delhi seller also giving competitive pricing. No point going to local IT Hub when you have tomshardware, anandtech, hifivision and other websites to guide you and other great indian sites to buy directly from.

Only word of caution: Online shopping is addictive esp if you are a tech enthusiast.

Cheers

The HTPC is fine. only concern that i see is the support for corsair memory of that motherboard. Asus E350 ones are known to have booting issues with corsair 1333Mhz XMS3 memory. There is a bios update on it also. Why not go for a full sized wireless remote mouse combo when you can get it for 1100 Rs. you will have some cash and probably use some generic remote with the htpc. I would suggest you go for 2 TB drive itself.

Thanks for the tip Vaibhav. Then the GSkill ram maybe a good option. It was going cheaper on DeltaPage & Primeabgb. Else there is always chaeper options like evm.

My main intention was to keep the rig as low cost as possible, reason being I already have a bigger dedicated HTPC in my bedroom (2.5 TB HDD Space, Raedon HD 4600, Dual Monitor - 22" & 32" HDTV, Wireless & Wired KB/Mouse and several other things). Having two HTPCs looks redundant in some sense. So I am evaluating the options.

In addition to this I have got Xbox 360 with 250GB HDD, Wii, HD Set top box, divx player etc running on Samsung Series 5 46" HDTV in living room. But somehow the living room is still missing that single media experience. I wish if I could just convert the TV into a smart one with low cost that gets all my 300 gb music, HD Movies, You tube and 5.1 analog to play. I am running low on options :(

Guys
time for me to actively plan my my source upgrade. Do the Audiophile apps like foobar and kernel streaming tweaks all work on Windows 7 CE? I am thinking of getting that one as the custom linux alternative.

First I will install win7 then roll my own audiophile linux distro on my quadcore with an install target of the fusion architecture.

Thanks for the heads-up, Vaibhav. I'm planning to pick up the Asus E350 board, and I use a Corsair 1333 Mhz 4GB RAM module in my build. I just checked up, and it is not the XMS3 version; It is the "Value" version. Hopefully it will be ok.

@gobble, I'm not really sure if Foobar2000 will work on Win 7 CE (Windows Embedded Compact 7). There doesn't seems to be any such setups mentioned on google.

I think they should be ok. CMX8GX3M2A1333C9 is the RAM with which the board is having a problem. More on the link here:AMD E-350 Thread (now in new forum?) - Page 6
Better still check for compatibility before hand by checking the memory support list on asus website
