Dear friends

I am a army personnel and have a limited budget of 30000-40000 and want to buy a decent HT for my home.

Room size varies as mine is a transferable job but never less than 12' x 15'. Therefore i require acompact system easy to assemble and dissamble.

Usage Watch TV and listen to music (both 50%)

Have a 46" LED smart TV with HD Tata Sky

Have surveyed Onkyo HTS 3500, Onkyo HTS 4505.
Seen on net YHT 298 and Denon 1312 XP.

Can you friends guide me which system to go for as i donot visualise upgrading the same in next five years, basically need a good set up to enjoy good music and pleasurable TV experience.

Help immediately required

Also to note i get posted to far flung places with no support. pl keep the same in mind while advising

Welcome to HFV.

For your use HTiB is better than big book shelf or floor standers. Among the above models I suggest Yamaha 298. It is more future proof than the other models as it has 4K passthrough support. Also Yamaha has more service centers than the other brands.

If your preference is for music then a stereo amp + a pair of book shelf or a 2.1 speaker system like Swans is better than HT.

Welcome to HFV,yes Onkyo,Yamaha HTib are good choice.Demo them & select the product of your choice.

Thanks a ton for replies.
Tell me if Yamaha YHT 298 has active/powered subwoofer and what should be the cost.
How is onkyo HTS 4505 compared to this.

And friends what is 4K pass through

Yamaha YHT 298 has active subwoofer.Go for Yamaha, I have demoed this set. This is better than Onkyo.

4k passthrough will accept a video signal up to 4k as input and is able to pass it to the tv (hence the name). 4K pass-through is meaningless for the next 5 years(at least) at a price anybody would be willing to pay. There is no 4K content. Nobody has any clue how to create any. DTH TV (which cable/Sat is based on) will be 720P/1080I for the next 10 years. Blu Ray won't be capable of it. Internet speeds capable of providing it will need to be 10 times faster than they are now.

i will suggest little different than others..
you can buy a denon 1513..24k and 2 decent bookshelves TSi 100..12k for now...
or onkyo/yamaha entry level avr in spite of denon 1513
later add center ch..12k..,sub..15k.. and surrounds..12k..one after one..while strong in budget..
this way you can enjoy a system no compromised...

if budget is strictly 40k for the whole system...then yamaha 298 or onkyo 3500 or denon 1312xp all equally good..

Prosenjit thanx for the guidance

But budget is a constraint and i want it as a one time investment.
Assistance required is which one of these as i am a complete non techie in trhese matters

Dearest Biju further clarification required

A suggestion - you said you will watch TV and listen to music. Neither of these are Dolby surround sound encoded - meaning the audio is going to be 2 channel not 5 or 7 channel.

Many others far wiser have said this and I will say it as well - please consider a good strong stereo integrated amp with a pair of bookshelves and an active sub. Chances are, you will get an amp that will be built like a tank and will have true horsepower and clarity instead of a ht system that will have lots of features except for what really matters - sound quality and true RMS power.

I don't mean to insult HT systems in any way - but at your price point, you will get either a really good stereo amp like a NAD or a Marantz or you will get an okay-ish entry level HT system. I argue that even if you are watching a blu ray movie, strong 2 or 2.1 channel sound will easily beat weak 5.1 channel sound.

Just a thought.

I have seen the plight of those who get frequently transferred to far flung places and have also seen what happens to their assets, e.g.Micro, fridge, art pcs, etc, bought with hard earned salaries. I'll suggest an HTIB like onkyo/Yamaha is the best for you, as it can be easily be repacked for transfer, does not require any extra furniture and can be re-installed easily at the new place. Strictly a suggestion, with due respect to other FMs.

In a limited budget and to enjoy movies + music, I would suggest you to got for Yamaha YHT 296 or 298. 296 does not have 4k passthrough but 298 does. This is the only major difference. This will be good for music too.

I too agree with vnmathur57 that since you'll be posted throughout India frequently, then you need a brand which has service centers across India and in this category Yamaha has an edge over Denon and Onkyo. Else in case of any problem in future, you'll end up in paying more for shipping than it's repairs. So practically speaking Yamaha would be a better choice for you.

Dear All
Thankx for your advises and i seem to be biased towards Yamaha.

A new problem friends

I believe that YHT 298 is out of production and is being replaced by YHT 299. I enquired the same in Yamaha Music Square, Chennai. The Dealer quoted 40000/- for YHT 299.

While going through the official Yamaha Site and comparing both the products i really could not find any difference and the price difference is quiet a bit.

Any one with any experience with these two products or anybody who can throw some more light and guide me.

Friends this may sound funny but i really want best for my hard earned money and i really dont have the luxury to spend again and again due to ltd sources of income

Thanks in adv :) :) :signthankspin:

Friends

Still the query remains

firstly between these two models which one to buy and why

secondly what would be a good price for both these models

Companies keep renaming the same thing for the sake of introducing new models for the new year lineage even when there's no remarkable difference in the features. 40K is too high when you are getting the same features in about 33K (YHT-298) so don't get confused between these things.

If you want to satiate your feeling that you bought a very recent/latest model then you can spend 40K and get YHT-299.

if wants to spend 40K on HT then better buy Yamaha AVR RXV-373 at 25K and speakers 5.1/5.0 of any good brand at around 20K, I think some series from JBL HT speakers is sold at around 20K. Even Jamo SCS426 is sold at 22K.

there's no end to this. I feel any HT is not worth spending 40K on it.

Sir, firstly thank you for protecting our country, our freedom and our way of life.

Please check out the HTiB offerings from JBL.

If you increase your budget slightly, better options could be had. Just for an idea

Home Theatre Packages

Prices could be bargained down a bit I guess.

Today I took demo of the following sets

1. Onkyo 5.1 (with 2 floor standing speakers and 290W sub)
2. Pioneer RS30/32
3. Yamaha 196
4. Pioneer (with satellite speakers)
5. Onkyo 3500

I liked the sound of onkyo. Both 3500 and the floor standing model (dont remember the model no) were same wrt the receivers and the speaker wattages, however the 290W subwoofer in the latter made the difference. Rest everything is same with ARC and 3D support. 3500 is available for 26.5K and the other one for 54K

Yamaha 196 lacked the thump. Didnt like the sound (Rs 22K)

Pioneer RS30/32 sound was good, the price too was attractive (Rs 36K) 210 W Active Sub if I remember correctly. But came to know that the Receiver is not future proof. It does not support 3D nor it has any USB. Googling it further came to know that the set has got problems. Priced - 36K

Pioneer (satellite speaker model) also did not appease me much. Price 19K

I want to demo the Yamaha 298 which I have not been able to.My requirement is for Satellite speaker because of space constraint. Once I do that, I will zero-in on one of these models. I have a limited budget of max 30K.

Can anybody suggest the best one in terms of quality and after sales service.

Once you audition YHT 298 do give me a feedback. I couldnot audition YHT 298 as the system was packed in one vendors shop and the other gave me a info that it is out of production and YHT 299 is the replacement model with extra cost of 40K
