Hello Folks,
I am interested in purchasing a 46-50 inch backlit LED LCD TV with local dimming.

I was zeroing in on the LG 47 LH90 when they stopped selling those, so its back to the drawing board for me.

Maybe I havent searched hard enough but all I can seem to find are the "edge lit" LED LCD TVs.

Please let me know if any true backlit LED LCD TVs are available in 46"-50" size.

Thanks in advance.

You could try out the 47 or 55 inch LH9500 and compare india seems to have them priced at 157,390 and 232,570 respectively. But this price is far beyond the price of the LH90.

The dealer offering this deal is an online dealer called bitfang. I however do not know much about them

BitFang - LED

I suggest that you wait to see what sizes they come up with on the LH8500 supposedly ,another true backlit TV, the 42 inch version of which has just been advertised in the TOI paper. If released my guess is that the 47 inch version should cost around 130000-140000.

Well LG is supposed to have launched the 8500 but its has considerable banding issues.
The other tv that you may find is the sony X450A which uses a RGB backlight dimming.

@gfreeman: Thanks for your suggestion but LH9500 is waay above my budget :-(. Also, isnt it one of the 3D ones? I think

@Adder: Thanks for the suggestion. So apart from the Sony you mentione and the LG 8500, there are no other backlit LED LCD TVs in the market??

Thanks adder.

This makes me think that I'd rather go in for a regularLCD TV (with ccfl). Do you think that is a better option than the pricey edge lit LED LCDs?

If yes, as per your opinion, which ones provide the best options in terms of:
1. Deep true blacks
2. Max viewing angle
3. Can play video games occassionally without lag or ghosting

Thanks for letting me piggy back off your vast store of knowledge.

well i wouldn't pay more then 10% more for the edge Led lcd display.
The advantage they offer are thinness factor and the power consumption, only some edge led displays like the yet to be launched sony HX800 have some form of localized dimming.
If you want deep blacks and low input lag you can have a look at the sony EX700 that comes with sharp X generation panel which natively has a low response time,so you get low input lag and slightly better viewing angle compared to say a SPVA based EX500 and is also edge lit so lesser power consumption.

In CCFL lit both the sony Ex500 and samsung C650A are your best CCFL option with natively deep blacks.

Yeah. And if your budget is around 90k-100k, you can even look at the LG 60PK950 which has just been launched. It's a 60 inch plasma, ultra thin and had great blacks when I demoed it at a consumer electronics fair recently. It has a tru black filter, Wifi, 4 HDMI, 2 USB (HD capable) and what not. Alternatively, the Panasonic 50V20 should be available for around 100-115k, but it's a 50 inch model. For the same price, I feel the LG 60PK950 is far better value for money. You get 10 inches more in size too.

I would suggest to wait for some more time. Flat TV technology is really changing very rapid way. Think just 3 years before and now so much revolutions. You probabaly will get many options in resonable prices down 6 months. Read somewhere that philips will be back very soon with many models to add competition. May be OLED or Laser Tvs will be way to go for Indian market in couple of years.
Only most important Question:- Can you delay your good wish?

Hey you could consider a 50" plasma then, if deep blacks and good color saturation is what you're looking for

Shreeps: I was initially biased against plasmas due to:
1. Burn in issues or IR
2. Screen lag
3. Fear that they may become obsolete since manufacturers are dropping off one by one
4. Higher Electricity consumption
However the more I research, the more VFM I find them. I am thinking of demoing the LGPK550 and the Samsung C550 and then take a decision.

Shreeps: Thanks Venkat. That sounds good. I did not know about the PK950, I just see the PK550 on the LG website. Is this a HD or a "HD Ready" TV?

Yeah the LH90 was a beaut, I think there will be some places that might have a some stocks left, for 90k
Shreeps: I am afraid there are None available in Pune and I am a bit scared of buying discontinued models due to possibility of non availability of spares/parts in case something gies kaput.

I agree with you viper, however from my previous experience with electronic items, its a never ending game. Theres always something new around the cornder which seems to make sense waiting for. And all the companies price the offerings with the latest technology very high and only enthusiasts with deep pockets can go in for those.

I'd rather take a decision based on my need point (NOW :)) and go for the most VFM offering.

The LG 60PK950 is a full HD model. It looks smashing whether it's turned on or off. I was blown away by this model when I saw it at the fair. If I had a budget of 110k (my dealer said MRP was 170k and his best price would be 108k), the 60PK950 plasma would be a no brainer! Blacks were terrific.

I was looking at 60PK950 as well... Which dealer is giving at that price Venkat? I was quoted 150k nego..

Venkat,
I am getting the same quote as Shammy (MRP 170k, will come down a bit to around 150-155k). Can you reconfirm the price of the 60PK950 from your dealer and if he's really willing to let it go for 108K, would he able to send it to Pune?

The only tech that will truly replace plasma in some years is OLED. They offer the same color/black/motion performance of plasma. Thats because like plasma TVs, and CRTs before them, OLED is a fluorescing technology -- it needs no backlight, unlike LCDs. They offer much better brightness, at a fraction of the thickness and power consumption but at multiple times the costs.

Right now I can say we've got a good 5 years to go before OLED screens can attain the size and price parity. As of now Sony has a 15.4" model retailing for $1600. LG just demoed a 31 incher at the IFA 2010. So for the time being Plasma is still king of the hill when it comes to videophile PQ
