BeagleBone Black MPD Music Server

imagine working any other way. I think someone on LinuxMusicians.com got KX working on a Raspi, not sure now. I cannot think of a good reason for music listeners to take on JACK, especially without the Cadence front end.

Raspy really seems too weak and low powered to run stuff like this.
What is cadence and what does it have to do with Jack? (NM I'll read up. Do you use KX for recording? Or just playback?)I used Jack interfacing between alsa and MPD for 6 months and swore it was better than plain MPD even for just playback until I experimented and realized only last month that I had overcome the deficiencies of a plain alsa+MPD setup by tweaking the time between interrupts and the optimal buffer size to complement it.

Ok Kolkota means you can't come over to listen to my pc based setup to compare.
What is a female usb port? Even on a mobo I have only seen male headers. But in any case try and use those to get extra usb ports for connectivity.

G0bble, I used to record, at least digitising vinyl. I probably will again, but these days, day-today, it is a playback system, and the USB DAC is used much more than the firewire interface.

Would have been nice if I could hear your system but thanks, anyway.
May be someday if I ever travel to B'lore. But for now no chance!

The ports that are found on mobo are female ports. We generally plug in different usb devices, the port doesn't hang out! :)

This BBB board has proper 2.0 USB port.

I think reading files through Ethernet port will ensure not sharing bandwidth of the same host controller. Although I will try with a powered USB Hub later on and check. If that works without any compromise that will be best option.

Ok that?

Funny but the ports on a itx to atx mobo are a double row of male pins so that confused me.

If you can pull an ethernet cable to the BB then problem solved except for HDD - are you using usb HDD or eSata?

This one has 4 USB A type ports

Now if these ports were to be all be on atleast two different usb host controllers and there existed a usb wifi dongle that works flawlessly with linux I would go have gone for it. But nah... 4 ports on once controller, will mean interrupt sharing or at the least contention for the data bus again ...

For now testing purpose, I am using n/w shared file from my main PC. So the Ethernet port is serving both purpose. To control it through phone and reading the music files to playback.

In the open posting, I mention about these possibilities:
Hard disk with LAN port. (Like this)
A converter like this

Hi Guys,

Just came across a article about Arch Linux:

What do you think about this article: A Simple Arch Review ? failing like never before

I wont suggest using Archlinux unless you have had a taste of it before. Archlinux uses systemd for init by default and I had a horrible time getting it to mount my network filesystems before starting mpd.

However if you manage to get it installed properly the package management is excellent and it comes with all the benefits of a rolling release linux distribution.

Thanks Bobbyprajan,
Yes that seems to be problem with Arch to mount filesystem before the mpd.

If you are using NFS then try using autofs. I have used autofs to mount file system from NAS and had never faced any issues. With autofs the file system gets mounted only when it is accessed first in this case mostly when mpd accesses it first time after each boot.

Thanks. That was helpful pointer. I searched web and found a nice guide:

Automatically mount USB external drive with autofs

BTW, Hassan, impressive stereo setup there!

Unfortunately, my DAC doesn't have I2S input straight away. The only way to feed is to hack the DAC board. I am not seriously thinking about it and also I do not enough expertise to do that.

But yes, what we know about I2S connectivity, that should sound better than going through USB route.
