Best DVD player iwth USB

can any 5996 user confirm the 2 GB+ single avi (in XVid) file limit of the player? I need to know this before I ask Philips guy for replacement.

Example of 2GB+ avi files are BRRips from ProdJi, UnSeen, DZ0N3, and sometimes TMG too.

Why dont u split the movies into two files of 1 gb each. I do the same for all dvd rips of 2 gb plus and they work beautifully on my lg.

Need Help!

Can anyone using dvp 5996 plz tell me if its possible to connect an hdmi cable as well as get a 5.1 channel analog output from the dvd player? some users are saying that hdmi and analog 5.1 don't work simultaneously.

Yes, its right only one option will work one time, it does not output on both sources together

This doesn't make sense. What's the use of a 5.1 player if 5.1 output is not active at all times? There should be a sound output setting somewhere.

Ok, so that means that if I connect my lcd with the dvd player via hdmi, i wont be getting a 5.1 analog output! hell! whats the use then?

most people have analog speaker systems. that's a real problem then...

If I understand this right, you want to use the HDMI cable to send the video to the LCD, and connect 6 RCA cables between the DVP and the AVR for sound?

As far as I can make out the 5996 does have 5.1 Audio out. I am not sure about this. If it does, there is no reason why you cannot get audio out through the 5.1 analogue out.

Dushie, are you sure it does not work? Any DVD player that has an HDMI and a 5.1 Analogue out will send signals through both channels. Can somebody post a picture of the rear side of the 5996?]

Cheers

Hi Venkat
As per the research i had done there was an issue where, if it gives audio out through hdmi, the other audio out options are disabled and you need to manually do some changes for it to work ...

Was reading through some forums on a similar model outside here is what i found out -

When I reconfigured it as I just stated, I quickly was reminded of why I send analog audio to the TV through RCA cables. The absolutely stupid, inane, vapid, insipid, unforgivable answer is that when you switch the DVD player HDMI AUDIO to "on," the DIGITAL AUDIO SETUP option is disabled and DIGITAL OUTPUT defaults back to "PCM Only." This means that you cannot send 5.1 digital surround sound information to your surround sound receiver through the coaxial digital output on the back of the 5992 if you have it's HDMI AUDIO set to "on!" You are forced to use RCA cables to your TV for analog audio and switch HDMI AUDIO to "off" if you want to send 5.1 output to your receiver! Maybe if your surround sound receiver has HDMI audio input and switching, this muting will not be an issue, since you will not be using the coax digital output. But millions of current surround sound receivers currently in use do not have HDMI inputs and rely on the digital coax (or optical) input to receive 5.1 information!

If you are using the coax digital out to your surround sound receiver instead of HDMI, try this yourself. Make sure the HDMI AUDIO is "off," play a DVD with known 5.1 DD or DTS, and verify on your receiver's display that it is receiving and decoding 5.1 surround sound. Then, go into the 5992 setup menu and switch the HDMI AUDIO to "on," (don't forget to hit the "OK" button to finalize the selection) and then you will see the surround sound receiver switch to 2-channel Pro-Logic! You will also note that as soon as you set HDMI AUDIO to "on," the DIGITAL AUDIO SETUP option becomes shaded (disabled) and when you take a look at the DIGITAL OUTPUT setting, it has defaulted back to "PCM ONLY" with no way to switch it back to "ALL" unless you turn HDMI AUDIO back to "off!"

If any 5996 user can try the above and report out the findings ...

Well, I called Philips Customer Care today and they told me the 5.1 channel analog audio and hdmi video would work simultaneously.

So, that solves my problem. Now I can use my analog home theatre as well as an hdmi cable!

That's sensible news from the horses mouth. But did you find out if it actually works?

Dushie:

I think there is a little confusion here.

The two examples you gave both refer to using HDMI and Co-Axial Digital at the same time. This is very much possible as when your switch 'HDMI On' most other digital channels may be switched off. There is some confusion in manufacturers' minds about protection of digital rights, and each DVD Player and AVR/HT is implemented differently.

When you are sending data in digital form from the DVD to the HT, you are expecting the HT to decode the signals. The data can be carried using HDMI, Co-Axial Digital or Optical.

But if you connect the TV with a HDMI cable, and use the six cable RCA for connecting the 'Analogue out' from the DVD to the 'analogue In' of the HT, I am sure it will work. In this case, the Dolby and DTS signals will be decoded by the DVD player and sent as six (for a 5.1 set up) separate audio signals for the HT to just amplify. The HT will not do any decoding but just amplify and play the sound. You need 6 'RCA Out' sockets in the DVD Player, and six 'RCA In' in the HT system.

If I am not wrong this is what FRIEND was looking for.

Please check my write up on connectivity for details

Okay I have shortlisted either the Pioneer dv 410, or the Phillips 5996.
Could you tell me if these players can play content from a hard disk drive via the USB port? That would be great because it would be as good as an HTPC.
Also what is the best price I can expect for these players?
Thanks

One thing you should note bfore going for 5996 (i'm also planning to buy it) is that it doesn't have a optical audio output option. So, in case you plan to buy an HTS later, it might cause problems.

Hi,

Anyone knows where I can get a 5996 in Delhi (preferably South Delhi), and for how much... also, is an HDMI cable included with the player? I'm still waiting for an exchange for my Samsung, and the guys at the shop say that 5996 is not available anywhere. I'm currently using a laptop with a VGA cable connected to my plasma, but it's sure not as convenient as dedicated player.

Thanks.

Same prob in Kolkata, 5996 was supposed to be available in philips arena a week ago, still no news!
This is really irritating!

I purchased it from Home Town, Great India Place Noida. It was also available in croma at pacific mall close to Anand Vihar.

I have coax digital audio out going to my avr, and hdmi cable going to my projector. It works fine. Component connection to TV was also working simultaneously, however, my TV doesn't support progressive scan so the display on TV was screwed up.

That's sensible news from the horses mouth. But did you find out if it actually works?

Thanks, but can the Philips 5996 or the Pioneer 410 get connected to a hard disk drive through the USB and play content from the HDD?
Please do let me know...
