Best DVD player iwth USB

Hi everybody,
Its Great to see the thread discussing abt the same confusion I had abt the right DVD player to buy.
my main requirements (apart from basic ones) for my DVD player - Divx capability, USB 2.0 (should able to read from portable 500GB ext-HDD), audio 5.1 , HDMI, Optical Output.

I have read through all ur posts and after some net digging,I had short listed some in 3 brands i prefer. seems same as every one else.
nerverthless Is my ranking ok? Please advice?

  1. Samsung - DVD-HD870-no optical/HDMI/USB?/Audio 5.1
  2. Samsung - DVD-1080PK-optical/HDMI/USB?/Audio 5.1----OK!!! -(Rank 1)
  3. Samsung - DVD-1080P7-optical/HDMI/USB 2.0/Audio 5.1
  4. LG - DV 388-optical/HDMI/USB/Audio 5.1----OK!!! -(Rank 2)
  5. Philips - DVP 6565-HDMI-No opt-USB-Audio 5.1------OK!!-slot loader --(Rank 3)
  6. Sony-DVD Player - DVP-NS708HP/B-No USB/Audio 2.0/HDMI
  7. Sony-DVD Player- DVP-NS78H-No USB/Audio 5.1/HDMI-OK!!!! -(Rank 4)

some players above do not have some features.

Guys owning the Samsung - DVD-1080PK please give ur detailed opinion.

I would rank the Sony above the Philips for the primary reason that Philips Slot Load looks cool but is buggy. I had a slot load phlips for 4 months . I hardly used DVD's for playback ( mainly playback was done via USB) and after 3 months of usage the slot load started acting up. It was not able to eject the DVD's properly and I had to change her for another dvd player !

foxbat - I own the Samsung 1080PK and have given my detailed thoughts and impressions in this same thread. Please look through.

By the way I got an LG HDMI cable free with my unit !!! Now I have three HDMI cables :p !

I also got the LG 388 on 12th. Was drawn to it because of the HDMI cable and the HDMI/USB facility. Was shocked to find the USB 1.1 written in the manual as I had expected it to be USB 2.0 because of the wording USB Plus.

Can you compare the HDMI cables with you and give a feedback on the quality of the LG Cable. I personally did not find much improvement with the HDMI cable (first time using a HDMI cable ) with my Sansui LCD TV.

Any idea what that Volume push stick is there on the front panel for ?

Congrats on your purchase !

I have three HDMI cables with me :-

1) Local 2) Sony and now 3) LG

Currently I am using Sony . I shifted from Local to Sony and I cannot tell any difference. Maybe because I have a 26 inch LCD  . Yet to try the LG cable .

The volume push stick is to control the Mic Volume during Karaoke.

Thanks for the reply.

Actually I was hoping the HDMI connectors are gold-plated !!
Not lucky on that front.

My local hdmi cables have a gold colour, now I dunnow whether they are gold plated or not ! :) But my question to you is , do you really think that gold plated connectors would make a difference ? I am skeptical ! For exmaple in my last trip I had bought belkin gold plated components for my hall 29 inch crt. i compared the picture quality with some local components and there was not much diff. Sometime I feel that It is more like a placebo effect , if you know what I mean !

Listening to Audio Right now! As i use an av reciever to do the decoding it does not make a diff to me. However plan to watch lots of movies the next 4-5 days . Will come back with my comments .

@backbencher- is it possible to remove the program thing in the Music Menu .?? This will increase the viewable length of the MP3 songs on the menu !!

Hi,
Did you try HDMI connection with DV-388?Picture Quality?
Also vob files on usb or HD?

My DV 388 is connected to Samsung 26 inch LCD in my room via HDMI. I am more than satisified with this player. The tightness of the picture is just amazing . In fact around 1.5 years ago when I was in a hunt for a DVD player , I had taken a demo of LG DN 192 , and the demo was EXCELLENT ! But I was afraid of the quality and I had also heard that the LG DVD Tray creates problems down the line.Hence I did not go for it and settled for a SONY. However this time I decided to take the plunge as my 99% of the movies are divx downloads from the net and hence I would hardly be playing movies via DVD's. All my movies are played via USB.So far I am happy with this player. I love watching movies on it . I am yet to try the DVD VOB files on USB thing. I will check the same today/this week and get back to you on that. I will still wait for a month more before I place in my review on the DV 388.

Hi All & Illusion..
I'm happy that topic posted by me is really useful and got amazing positive responses even if I contributed NOTHING. I'm yet to finalise on my first DVD player. Illusion please tell me can I go for LG DV388? I'll be using DVD player only for my Sony 21" CRT TV HP213M93 as of now which I brought recently. Hence no plans to upgrade to LCD in couple of years atleast. So HDMI may not be required. Please let us know Audio & Video DAC specs of LG DV388.
Anybody suggest me please whether Samsung DVD-P480 is a good choice or any alternatives.

If you dot want to upgrade to LCD then there is no reason to go for HDMI upscaling. You can save the 1k differentials and spend that on DVD movies instead. I will consult the manual and get back to you on the Audio /Video DAC part.

Hi spirovious , I am downloading two of those movies now but I am 101% sure that they will not play as these are HD WMV videos which are not supoorted by LG or any other budget dvd players in question. However i will get back to you after some time on the same.

As I said earlier the files that I downloaded had a resolution of 1280X720 pixels while the DVD player max supported resolution is 720X576 pixels. hence no luck during playback. I dont think Lg dv 388 supports wmv at all ! i could not find the same anywhere in the manual. But nice videos. Had a lovely time watching the same in my lappie !

Hi,

I downloaded T2 with 720p.Converted to DVD with nero7 (5.1).
Looks nice on PC.Will try 1080p also.
WMA audio may be supported by LG.My Onida manual dont suppot WMA,
but I can play WMA audio.

So could you see downloaded movies from 388?

No downloaded movies are 'WMV' which is not supported . However 'WMA' which is windows media audio is supported . Moreover even those movies were divx , xvid they would not be supported as the native resolution of the movies were beyond what the budget dvd p-layers support. In fact I dont think there are any upscaling dvd players in the market , whatever be the cost, that support HD DIVX/WMV !

LG DV-388
hey guys i'm also planning to buy LG dv-388 model
my friend just bought the player.
here's what i saw on his player
with usb it supports - divx, mp4, avi, jpeg, mp3, vob, xvid, mpeg even displays srt(subtitles) file
didn't support wmv, mkv

@ illusion
I want to know if it supports HD videos of television shows that we download of the internet? it is usually in .mkv format
I don't kno if data dvd with movies will work or not?
