BIG FLAT SCREENS:longevity vs cost

Proud owners of plasmas n lcds(bigger than 40 in) which lasted for more than 5 yrs, please come forward n declare urself so that prospective buyers cn get some encouragement.

^^^ seems like there are none

I have purchased a 16:9 TV (Panasonic P50ST50). I hope that it lasts at least 10 years. But I am not confident.

just4kix ,
Can you tell why you are not confident ?
Panasonic is held as the undisputed leader in reliability with regard to its plasmas.
If top line 2012 panasonic plasma's cant last 10 yrs ,What is the hope for LGs and Samsungs ?

Atleast us Indians who are VFM to the core must get clarity on the situation.
My heart slumps at the prospect of sinking 100k in a top of the line plasma/LED-LCD only to see it sputter out by 5 years.

ha ha.. liked it... I doubt there are many 40inch buyers in those days (more than 5yrs back) available on board..

anyway I own a Sony 32 inch LCD , bought more than 5 years back (I felt proud to be among the first few to have LCD then ;) ) .. still running fine, no issue..

I am planning to get a better and bigger new gen TV as a 2nd TV..

I have seen cases where the sets have failed in a couple of years and some sets just running nicely even after 5 years. My friend has a LCD (CFL based) Samsung TV running for 6 years without any problem. The catch there is it was from Dubai and I am yet to see an Indian model of similar build quality. :p

For those people who use their tvs(plasma, lcd, led) for around 8hrs a day and is more then 4 years old, better to inspect the capacitors in the power supply board,if it has bulged or is leaking its better to replace them, they only cost around Rs2 to Rs60 each.

I have seen lots of tvs ,monitors which have gone kaput just because of blown capacitors, when they blow up they usually take the other components along with them(besides you or the repair person can't find the value of the capacitor, unless you have a service manual).

my crt monitors all went kaput and board was beyond repair because of a blown capacitors.
Few days ago my viewsonic lcd monitor was showing signs of trouble with buzzing CCFL inverter and switch On only after 10 or 20 hard power off/ons ,i removed the power supply pcb to find 4 capacitors bulged and leaking,so i called viewsonic they said minuimum charges for visting was Rs920 + the board ,costs another 2.5k roughly.
So i desoldered and soldered it myself costed Rs 15 for the new capacitors and is now working ,good for another 3 years.

Viewsonic all had chinese made capacitors.I also opened my Sony lcd tv which is very old now but found no leaking or bulging capacitors it all had rubycon japanese capcitors(which sadly is no longer available in electronic stores in india, which i wanted for my viewsonic).

Thanks adder and that is a very good info.
If someone wants to inspect the capacitors, many won't be knowing or comfortable on opening the board itself. In that case, I guess we need to call the service centre guys to inspect it. But showe how I am hearing this for the first time where one has to inspect inside the TV like we do for other machines.

Well all you need to do his remove the back cover of the tv to check the capacitors, some are visible even in the vent holes. To just see the capacitors which are bulging or leaking just removing the back cover is enough.

But in the case of my viewsonic the pcb was inside a aluminum casing,so i had to remove those as well,i removed the pcb completely because i couldn't see some values of the capacitor which i intend to replace.

the service center guys will charge a minimum fees just for visiting.

That is because, companies want you change models every three to five years.

Hmm... I bought my new plasma TV hoping that I can use it for at least 9 to 10 years. Are my expectations wrong ? In fact my parents still own the old CRT BPL TV which was bought in 1989 and still running good.

I have a 25 inch CRT Sony , which has never been touched in last 10 years.

Also in office a 40 inch Samsung LCD which runs 10 hrs a day for last 4 yrs.

It is better not to spend too much money on these things.

Well in these days you can forget about your flat panels tvs be it your plasma/lcd/led to last as long as your old crt tvs.It could last for 10 years if your usage is low.

Today's world is highly competitive to be that way there has to be some cost cutting and generally mass market manufactures(not all) wouldn't want their own product to last really long like 10 years.

Relax. You are being too gloomy. Don't worry be happy. It is quite possible that the TV may last 18 years and you may get rid of it because you are tired of it.

Sometimes the fear of short life are exaggerated

I had a 55" Philips Rear Projection HDTV purchased in Jan 2003 for 1.5L. It had 3 oil cooled guns (RGB) which was supposed to last only few thousand hours and supposed to have the so called image retention issues. It is still running strong. The only problem in these last 9 years was that I had to replace two convergence chip (STK).

The tv was huge and impossible to bring it with me when I shifted from Chennai to Pune. I gave it away as a freebie to the guy who purchased my flat and it is still running strong.
