Hello friends,

Today I bought a new Panasonic Plasma TV TH-P42V20D (42"). Currently I have hooked it up and watched TATA SKY (SD) and normal DVD video. Things looks good so far. I won't say WOW... but seems Ok. I have not done any fine tuning yet. I already had 26" Samsung LCD. I wanted to upgrade to bigger screen and preferably Plasma. Thanks to Hifivision, I got lot of inputs. I have posted few pictures. Suggest me the optimal setting please!!.

By the way can you guess the price I got this for :D

Congrats Arun, nice purchase. Picture quality looks good, what settings (color, contrast,brightness...) You are currently using??

Can we know the Price (Guess, something special :D) please??

Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I bought this for Rs. 60,500 (Sixty Thousand Five Hundred). This is along with bill and VAT. Soon I will connected a blue ray and test the HD features. Will keep you posted. Also if you want me to do any other test then let me know.

^ Congrats! Where did you get it?

Check AVS forums and Google for optimum settings, Pic quality on this thing is the best what ive seen here in India. It shows its full potential when 1080P material is played.

Congrats Arun! That's the lowest price anyone's got this set for and by far.

Can you tell me where you bought this set from? I've been looking for the same set and about 5 shops have told me they'll get new stocks only by next week.

Yes I should accept... the HD video is WOW :o . I connected it to my Blue Ray player which outputs video at 1080p/24Hz. The video looks great. This beast rocks :yahoo:. And one more thing, the stock is readily available in Panasonic. I grabbed from Vasanth and Co. (Chennai). You cannot expect any technical input from them. Moreover they dont even have this in their showroom :p. That guy persuaded me to go for LCD ;) .. You just have to walk in and tell them to get this TV, pay something in advance and then pay the rest after it gets delivered. So far I think this is the lowest price one can get with bill and warranty. Let me know if you would need any further details.

Aah! I didn't bother checking Vasanth and Co. because they usually are pro LCD and don't sell plasmas. :) Yeah, that's a great price you've got. I'll visit Vasanth and Co. tomorrow. Thanks a lot for the info man. :)

Just booked the 42" V20 at the same Choolaimedu Vasanth and Co. :)

The dealer said the TV will come home surely by tomorrow. But I'm not very sure if it will come by tomorrow. Anyways, couldn't pass up this great price so booked the TV. :)

BTW, Arun, don't know how you found this shop. It was a very small shop and was barely even noticeable. Great work!

Great!! Yes I was hunting a lot for past 1 month. Finally landed up here as the price they quoted was too competitive. I guess they are not aware of this TV much... Finally we get advantage of their ignorance :D

They will surely deliver that. If you really want to get it sooner then pick it directly from the showroom (I did that). They will bring it directly from the Panasonic godown. Let us spread this news before they realize to hike the price

Hehe! Yeah. Guess these guys have no idea about the average price. There was a shop right next to this shop and they quoted 70k and were coaxing me to pay advance and book the set! Previously, 64.5K was the least I was quoted, by a shop called Chandra Traders. But they couldn't arrange for stock for more than 2 weeks. Donno what's gonna happen with these guys.

Congrats on your purchase. You got a really good deal on the price.

I am using the following settings:
Mode: True Cinema
Contrast: 57
Color: 49
Brightness: 0/-4
Sharpness: 10
Color temp: Warm (i don't remember if it's present .. if yes, set it to warm)

Advanced Settings: White balance:
R: -1
G: -8
B: +4
R-C: -8
G-C: 0
B-C: +3

Set everything else to off. (Overscan, IFC etc.)

For 1080p/24 content (BD movies), Go to the setup menu when such a content is playing and set 24p Smooth Film to off (I like it in 24p .. no distortions).

These are more or less based on D-Nice's settings given on AV forums for the G20. The color balance and depth look awesome on this. If the picture is a little too dull for you, increase the contrast and color a little bit and set brightness to -4. Though I would recommend not to do it, as these settings look more or less optimal and similar to whatever is visible in a movie hall, your eyes would adjust in about an hour's time.

Watch the AVATAR BD or play uncharted 2 on PS3 if you can in a dark room and as BLASTO mentioned, you would go WOW/WOW/WOW :-)

HTH,
Santanu

Thanks Santanu,

But is this setting for all, or just BD DVD? I also have tata sky hooked up. I noticed that true cinema in tata sky (sd) is really not appealing. But I will change the other settings and test.

For tatasky, if you want, you can use the cinema mode with some modifications. In relatively dark conditions the settings i mentioned should work properly for SD content also.

I would in this context like to point out, that the True Cinema is somewhat similar to the THX settings. Meaning that for movie viewing conditions, it replicates the standard color matrix that the production system targeted. So, irrespective of whether you are using my settings or not, you may want to switch to the true cinema mode when viewing movies on the V20.

But finally, you should obviously go with the look that you like, finally that is what we all do. The cinema and true cinema modes give a good starting points.

By the way, for a punchier picture, you can set the gamma to 2.4 in advances settings.
