Guys,

First of all, thanks a ton to Hifivision for helping me out on selection procedure.
We really have wealth of information on all things electronics.

Yesterday, after so many confused attempts, I finally settled down on Panasonic 42X20D. I went to almost all showrooms and took demos of all type of plasmas and settled on X20.

Selection process:
1. Requirement was simple: Good picture quality with maximum panel size under 40K.
2. Had shortlisted LG PJ 350/560, X20, X10 and few Samsung things. Went trough Toshiba 40 inch LCD as well.
3. Primarily SD content on TATA Sky and in future upscaling Philips DVD player, so Full HD was out.
4. I liked the Plasma pic quality for SD anyday than any LCD and bigger is better :)

LG PJ560 had excellent sound quality but then its PQ was inferior to X20D (My opinion). My room size is 12 by 16 so I was ok with X20 sound and then I have 5.1 system which I can anyways plug in whenever required so was not particular about sound. LG PJ 350 was a good panel but again same as PJ 560 lacked in PQ. Samsung were good but costly and not VFM. Panasonic PQ was excellent and icing on the cake was 3 years warranty.

Now back to the TV: Yesterday at 11 I made the payment and the TV was delivered at 6 in the evening. Panasonic guys called me up about wall mounting and they will be coming today evening.

As of now, I have attached TATA sky and DVD player through its regular composite connections. There are no HDMI sources connected. In due course I will be buying Phillips DVD player 3568/94 which does the upscaling of the data to min 720P.

TATA Sky: The quality I would is all right. Not too fancy but moderate. I watch TV from 14 feet minimum and the quality at this distance is ok.

DVD player: I have a Dil Chahata Hain original DVD and this has come up really really well on the TV. The quality is awesome and crystal clear. Mind you the player connected through composite but still the quality rocks. My DVD player does not upscale and has no USB port, so I am unable to test HD or near HD content as of now.

Break in:
Well this is the area, I need your helping hand. As of now, on TATA sky I use built in Zoom (level 3) in function on the TV so as to avoid any logos on the panel. In this zoom level, no static image is visible on the panel. The only problem with this is that some part of the picture is not visible on the screen.

I have kept the TV on Normal picture mode with contrast set at 35, brightness 0 and color temp as normal. Is there anything specific I have to take care of?

I will keep on updating this thread as I keep using the TV. I am thoroughly satisfied with my selection and the TV is amazing. I have seen HD content on this in the showroom (Blu ray player) and the picture quality was just awesome. I am dying to get a new DVD player (Phillips 3658/94) soon. This is one of the best plasmas available at so low cost. I bought it at 37.5K but now think I could have bargained hard and settled it at around 36.5-37K. Money well spent I would say :clapping:

congrats NEON.:clapping:

Any idea about price of 50 " x20 ?

BTW i just cant able to get it that HD content whether is FULL HD or HD ready everyone says it looks awesome. So i wonder where would you find difference in quality ?

No idea on 50X20. I also wonder if the HD content which I saw on X20 (HD) and V20 (Full HD) next to it, I seriously could not make much difference.

to enjoy full HD experience properly u need a tv no less than 55 inch to spot the full HD content details with a normal perspective u dont need to try hard to spot the HD details. even i compared v20, x20 and u series 50" there was a difference not a vast one but there clearly was.

1) v20 was superior in full hd resolution off course

2) colours were richer reds were perfect! roses looked like roses unlike x20 which didnt have colour depth mabe because source was full hd

3) black details were deeper but still blacks were grey unlike my 16yr old sony crt tv where black is black u wont spot the black bars but i wont say u cant enjoy a blue ray on v20 but still blacks will always be missing (in other countries v20 have infinite black pro unlike india where the panal is only infinite black! it does make hell lot of difference when u watch a tv in completely dark room in us and other countries v20 got THX certification it matters a lot while watching movies.

i will plan to buy x20 50" in my living room HD ready as soon as my trinitron will give up it has lost all its colours. x20 because source will always be showing 720p or 1080i hd tv content from dth or whatever technology. and i dnt think indian crappy broadcast deserves v20 plasmas. but for personal dvd/blueray content it surely does. as of now bigger the better!! chears.

I Intend to use plasma mostly for 70 % gaming (PlayStation 3 ) and 30 % Movies (720 P)

For 50 " My Viewing Distance is 8 Fts

Which one should go for, X20 or V20 ?

thanks

use some kinda pixel shifting for teh 1st 150 hours when you play games on your PS3. especially if you go on a marathon gaming session with a particular game that has a HUD, you could risk the very real danger of a burn-in. Best thing is initially if you played HUD-less games like Assasin's Creed or Metro 2033, so then it wouldnt matter even if you';re playing 9-10 hours straight.

Guys,

For my kind of sources, I felt V20 would be overkill and also it was way out of budget. Panasonic in general has PQ advantage over other brands period. This certainly does not make other brands inferior. Each has its own strengths thats it.

Currently I watch TV in zoom 3 which cuts off some part of the picture but then does not show up static images. Today I watched a DVD rip of Harry Potter and it was good. May be an upscaling DVD player would show its magic on this rip.

Please help me set the TV to break in so I wont face any image burn in problem. Is there any built in setting which can show you how many hours of usage has done so that it would be easier for me to keep track of first 100-150 hrs.

Hi neon,

congratulation on your purchase.
i have a small query whats was the reason of buying x20 if you liked x10 more. was it fear of black level degradation issue in 2009 plasmas.

True. I heard about it quick few times. Also I thought why not go for the latest panel instead of settling on 2009 panel. Anyways we are almost at the end of 2010 as well, so the newer the better.

i did went to Panasonic showroom in kothrud saw side by side demo of V20 and X20 although difference when SD content is played is almost negligible, you can make out slight difference in quality when HD content is played. I was quoted MRP price, they said they would negotiate at the time of buying. I think MRP was something in the region of 50K ?

go again to that showroom put both plasmas on cinema mode with contrast 100% and turn of all the artifacts features (even decrease sharpness to 0% on full HD and 20% on SD . and observe the colors .. even on SD content (discovery on airtel dth which i saw) v20 shoots 2 to 3 times better and proper colors it was admirable i must say. i was in showroom for 45 min croma (mumbai) hard light hitting directly on all the plasmas and i must say my eyes were continuously searching for v20 baby! only when critical images used to come i compared them with x20. x20 is a value for money "living room TV" 50inch ofcourse but dont expect HD blue ay or a normal cinematic experience from it. cheers :)

guys,

I would loved to by V20, but in my budget (40K) X20 was the best buy. Another thing is, I watch TV from 14 ft and I can hardly make any difference in SD which is my primary source. V20 is a fabulous TV but then you have to pay for what you get :p

@OP: Is the Sound sufficient in this TV. How about the bass in action movies? And is there any way I can connect my present 5.1 computer speakers to it? They have a normal yellow, black, greenish connectors. Or if 5.1 speakers are not supported can I connect some 2.1 computer speakers to it?

@baccilus:

I have a DVD player which is connected to a 5.1 speaker setup so I was least bothered about the sound on the TV. After all Plasmas are for PQ than SQ. If you want to have a good set of speakers you can probably have a look at LG 42PJ350 model which more or less priced similar to X20. I bought my TV at 37.5K and I am satisfied with the PQ. Sound is all right nothing great but enough for my 12*18 ft living room.

But do you you think the LG 42PJ350 can be as good as the Panasonic X20 in terms of picture quality? I can improve the sound quality with a new pair of speakers but I can't do the same for the PQ.
