Hi everybody,
I have seen two approaches in this forum whenever "Budget" stereo setups queries came up for suitable speaker @ 50k max:
Approach-1
a. Get a decent sounding Bookshelf at approx 15k
b: Add a subwoofer at approx 20k
Approach-2
a. Get a decent floorstander at approx 40k to 50k
In case the music preference is Pop/Rock which of the two approaches is better? Please do suggest which make /model of speaker is recommended in that approach.
Thanks in advance,
Regds,
I can give you a personal anecdote, though, as you would have gleaned from the other posts, your mileage may vary...
I have polk floorstanders connected as fronts to a Yamha HTR (not a dedicated amp). The other day i took out some old (8yr old) JPW mini monitors bookshelves (tiny with a 5" sealed woofer) that were stashed in the attic (okay.. in a box-bed actually) and connected it to my HTR after changing the front speakers to "small" & crossover to 80hz. (adjust sw level for lower efficiency of the BS...And did a lot of listening..
while the sound was considerably different, I can tell you one thing..
all my life, I've looked at big floorstanders.. as a ticket to aural heaven - i like my music to have authority. after this simple comparo with BS speakers, that cost less than 1/4 of the polk audios when new; I can tell you my paradigm is completely shifted. the sub ensured there was no lack of scale.. and well... the best way to describe the sound is "much airier"... got me thinking -- what if I'd spent the POlk FS money on a superior pair of bookshelves?
Point I'm making is, if budget dictactes that you go the HTR route for your amplification (which makes bass management a no brainer), you should seriously consider looking bs+sub. (of course make sure it's a good sub ;-)). extending this logic further, if you've buying a sub any way (for HT use), don't buy the FS, and use the money to buy a better sub and better bookshelves!
I guess you could extrapolate this upwards for hi(gher)-fi ..
cheers..
ps -i've had floorstanders as mainsfor my entire hi-fi journey & the rti-a7 are the smallest floorstanders, among those that I have owned
