Building HTPC (first time..)

Cooler master Elite 100 you can get from Ebay India and all other price list is from Deltapage.com

Yaa..its better to go for Ethernet cable if possible, especially for streaming BR rips over the network.

Elite 100 support slim profile optical drives only so you will need to buy slim drives as compared to standard sized optical drives (BD ROM / DVD Rom / Writer, etc)

I'd suggest the AMD E350 Fusion platform too. It does everything you want, and does it by consuming very little power.

Between the Asus and Gigabyte boards, the Gigabyte might work out to me more VFM as it has USB3, and (I think) it is a bit more power efficient. Also I don't think the Asus boards are available in mini-ITX any more. The advantage of the Asus board available now (the E350-M1-M, microATX) is that it can work fanless and that it has more expansion slots.

The GD04B can be used with microATX boards as well as mini-ITX boards (I've used it with both).

I personally envy this setup of Hydra only if I did not have a micro atx board already at hand I would have surely gone for this. VFM.

However one think to note is that present fusion specs support only HDMI 1.3 so no real 3D that required HDMI 1.4 and if you want to upgrade in future by adding a GPU with HDMI 1.4 then remember the PCI express slot in fusion mobos is only running at 4x speed limiting your GPU-s true speed.

I did read somewhere that AMD / ASUS is launching a 3D capable APU for fusion platform, not sure of the price.

Will Silverstone GD04-B case accommodate 2 3.5" drive and 1 SSD with bigger micro-ATX board if i want to upgrade in future.

Cooler Master 100 looks nice but only has 1 3.5" bay.

I suggest you build your system with onlty the boot SSD and other storage you add via USB 3 as that will give you flexibility.

I don't have 3D capable TV now; so there isn't any real need for HDMI 1.4; 1.3 in enough for me. (But watching 3D stuff on Big LED TV is tempting :licklips:)

Infact I was thinking of this option earlier but it will be out of my budget.

I am kind of finalizing on below specs.

1) GIGABYTE GA-E350N-USB3 - 7745 (Ebay)
2) Corsair DDR3 4 GB PC RAM - 1199 (Flipkart)
3) WD Caviar Green 2 TB HDD - 8014 (Flipkart)
4) Cooler Master Elite 100 - 3524 (TheITDepot)
5) KB+Mouse - I have wired set lying around will use that one for now and will upgrade to wireless or different option later
6) Network - Will use RJ45 to connect to my WiFi Router

Total comes around 20K; touching limit of my budget. If hard drive price would have been lower then i could have manged below 20K figure.

What you guys think?

Refer my htpc link. I have given the links where you can get the components at lowest price. For ebay, don't forget to use discount coupons.

You may go for a cheaper low capacity SSD at this point for as low as 3500 INR and then later on when prices come down you can purchase 2TB USB in the remaining budget or slightly increasing it (I mean the actual total budget of 8014 INR). In the component list you have to consider HDMI cables if you do not already have that and lastly take a look at zebronics genesis cabinet as well if you want to relook at other options with PSU it will come under 2000 INR.

I'd suggest doing this too.

The WD 2TB Green disk is 8Kish on Flipkart. You'll get a Seagate 2TB "Green" (ST2000DL003) disk for 7.2K there. This is a low RPM, low heat, low noise and low power disk. You'll save about Rs.800.00. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Seagate has a far friendlier and efficient RMA process if god forbid, the disk should fail later.

Isn't Seagate hard drives has problems. Some of my friends has Seagate hard drives and they faced lot of issues with them; that's why i selected WD Green.

What's your view?

Will there be any performance issue (HD playback) with low RPM drives coz i haven't used low RPM drives till now.

Thanks haisaikat; Zebronic case looks nice where can i get this case with PSU?

There should not be any problem with playback. I am using a 1TB Green HDD and didn't find any problem playing HD files of size 2-4GB. I haven't tried bigger files. The boot time is a little high due to the low RPM.

I've had both brands fail on me often enough, so I don't think that makes too much difference. I haven't personally RMA'd a HDD (all my HDD RMAs so far have been done by the people I bought the HDDs from), but what I've heard is that Seagate's process is less of a hassle.

If the WD Green had been cheaper I'd have suggested that, heh, heh. In this specific case, Rs.800.00 bucks saved is Rs.800.00 saved, unless WD has something extra to offer (which I don't think they do).

As baijuxavior mentioned above, in the HTPC scenario, the only drawback with the Green drives is that they take a bit longer to boot up. But the advantages (for a HTPC build) of lower noise, lower power consumption and lesser heat buildup offset this problem.

@cha_indian, my mobo is now a fanless one. I started out with a mini-ITX MSI mobo, but I switched to a microATX Asus mobo that runs fanless (E350M1-M) after the MSI board had issues.

The cabinet has three 120mm cabinet fans (stock), controlled by a Lian Li PTFN03 fan controller.

The cabinet fans were louder than I'd like them to be, and that is why I toned them down with the controller.

My PSU is a Silverstone Strider ST50F-ES.

About the noise level, the PC runs very quiet. You can't make out it is running even when you sit next to it, except at times when the HDD spins and makes a bit of sound. It also makes a bit of noise at startup and shut down.

Please post a pic of your setup...

I am amazed that three fans + PSU fan don't make much noise .. btw did you try to find out if a silent PSU like a power brick , etc for this mother board? If i ever want to build a music pc , it will be as silent as possible. Recently i installed a Cooler Master 460W PSU on my other computer thinking that it would be silent, but slowing it is becoming noisy. Please go through itx mini case-mini case manufacturer-Shenzhen Realan Computer Products Co.,Ltd and see if any of their silent PSU works for this motherboard.

thanks,
