Building HTPC (first time..)

Please post a pic of your setup...

I am amazed that three fans + PSU fan don't make much noise .. btw did you try to find out if a silent PSU like a power brick , etc for this mother board? If i ever want to build a music pc , it will be as silent as possible. Recently i installed a Cooler Master 460W PSU on my other computer thinking that it would be silent, but slowing it is becoming noisy. Please go through itx mini case-mini case manufacturer-Shenzhen Realan Computer Products Co.,Ltd and see if any of their silent PSU works for this motherboard.

thanks,

The 3 cabinet fans did make a low hum in the beginning. Now I have them spinning pretty slow with the fan controller. That way they don't make any sound. There are a few photos of the PC on this thread. These pics were taken when I was using the MSI board. I don't think I took pics when I switched over to the Asus board.

The PSU fan is very silent. I haven't had any problems with it so far (my build is 7 months old now).

I did consider a fanless PSU (not a DC-DC PSU, but a fanless SMPS). But they are very expensive. I could have thought about using a Pico PSU, but then again, at the time I was building the Music PC I wasn't really familiar with all the options. Also, getting one might have been a bit difficult.

The DC-DC PSUs on that website do look nice. That 180w PSU should be good for most HTPC builds. 85% efficient too!

Had you seen this Silverstone case? It comes with a DC-DC PSU (120w) and Adapter. It has a 90 degree rotated PCI slot/window in the back, and it comes with the necessary adapters for the 90 degree rotation (PCI only). However, it supports only the slim-type ODDs. It is a bit costly, at 9.4K though :(

Hi Guys,
i see every thing in the list, But isnt Sound Card a main component of HTPC?
In that case one should go for ASUS or Xfi related high end sound cards for the HTPC.
The greater the SNR ratio its better, ASUS gives 124 DB. I am not sure though what this means.

Also i will like to know the best way to connect the sound card to the AV Receiver, Digital out SPDIF or Standard L + R combination. Only SPDIF allows DOLBY DIGITAL or DTS in the receiver , but i heard that by using normal L + R it gives better quality in stereo music and also we can make use of the Sound card DAC as it may sound better than the receiver DAC.

I am currently connecting using Xfi sound card with digital out, not experimented with the other settings for music. If some one can shed light how to use Sounds card DAC it will be helpful.

I think the OP's main aim was movies and in that case if he can bitsream the audio via the same HDMI of the mobo then his AVR can do the remaining stuff of decoding, why should he spent an extra buck for decoding at the HTPC end.

Which HTPC front end would you guys prefer ? there are lot of options....

1) XBMC
2) Plex (I have used it on my Mac but windows version doesn't support themes yet)
3) 7MC + Media Browser
4) MeediOS
5) Media Portal

goes on...

Try OpenELEC...Based on XBMC core and lightning fast....Can be installed onto a USB Stick and you can completely avoid the HDD (streaming over a GigaBit network) or use the HDD purely for storage.

I have tried everything in the list except Plex and always came back to XBMC

+1 to XBMC

I'll try filters/calib etc and see if PQ can be improved as discussed often on net but even w/o filters or post proc it still does a very neat job !

+1 to XBMC. Others I haven't checked. But XBMC does the job perfectly.

Thanks. Can i run OpenELEC on USB and Windows from Hard drive? so i can switch between them if i want to.

I think its doable other option is to boot directly into XBMC - this has been recently discussed in HFV.

I tried XBMC on my Mac it seems quite nice and zippy played all of my files without an issue. The best part i liked is XBMC remote for android.

Congratts on your setup esobaki ..... was following the thread, and its good to see, you made decent choises ..... for front end, XBMC is the way to go as has been pointed by most of us. If you want further details on XBMC, please do visit my thread (in my sig) or baijuxavior thread based on Fusion

Do posts pics when your gear arives .... :)

Received most of the stuff for HTPC.

1) Cooler Master Elite 100 (Wow... it's slim and small better that online pics...:))
2) RAM (Got it next day... Flipkart rocks)
3) Seagate 2 TB Hard drive (Got it locally 6500/- :))

Now facing problems with mobo ordered it from ebay, seller shipped it on 30th Dec through "Blue Dart" but now Blue dart site status show "Flight/Vehicle/Train; Delayed/Cancelled - Contact Customer Service" . I also contacted Blue Dart customer care they say it's some where in mumbai.

No need to worry. I had seen the same message with two of my packages. That is a typical message with bluedart and their tracking system is bad. It will reach you eventually. In my opinion dtdc has the best tracking system.

Yep its very easy to setup XBMC official remote on android devices and it works like a charm !!

I'm waiting for my PSU - Corsair CX 500 V2 purchased from ebay on 22/12 and still waiting for it though I recd my corsair XMS 4GB @ 1333 MHz RAM module purchased from same seller off ebay...prolly because of the weather with so many trains getting delayed/canceled but even then waiting for new gear is driving me

Still waiting for Mobo to arrive... got info from Blue Dart customer care that it will reach me by tomorrow. Will post pics once i get all stuffs together.

BTW... any suggestions for wireless Keyboard/Mouse? (I like the android remote but will still need keyboard and mouse... can't live without 'em right?)

Not sure if it should be different for HTPC but I use Logitech and they are great. Get rechargeable batteries for the mouse as they run out fast.

In my opinion keyboard and mouse should be used only for working with your PC. For HTPC, a remote control is best suited. Search for HP MCE Remote in ebay or amazon.
