Building my Home Theatre Room - Please guide me

By adding this to your PS3 you can control even your PS3 with the Logitech Harmony 525 remote.

Glad to know such a thing exists. Just yesterday, I was setting up my PS3 for and was having a tough time navigating using the various buttons on the Remote Controller(Joystick). After some time, I got the hang of it, but still is not as intuitive as a regular remote.

The Harmony Adapter is much better than buying a PS3 remote from Sony(Sony Accessory). Wonder if Rashi Peripherals(Mumbai), the Indian Distributor for Logitech has already gotten them into India. This way, the price will be much lesser.

Thanks Guys.
@Subhash - will call you about BDs later today.
@Teky - I can't agree more about the "great and humble minds on this forum". Have taken some pics already, will upload and post soon. Still haven't played any games. I have to buy them as the slim does not have any bundled offer.
@Sundar: Yes, my HT is built completely based on knowledge and guidance of HFV members. I have to slowly start upgrading. Thanks again for your kind words and the BD.

No this thing hasn't been launched in India yet, and even if its launched here I don't think that it would be any cheaper.

Definitely man, some day!! Thanks for sharing.

About three subwoofers, I know you like to watch movies at high decibels and heavy bass. Tell me whether you like to hear the bass or hear and feel it. If you are like me and would like to feel it too, there is an american product called Butt-kicker that I would recommend. It takes the signal from the LFE and creates similar vibration effects(no sound, just the feel) when attached to your sofa. I first saw this at Torvin Electronics at Chennai some 5 years ago and really liked it. Need to get one or two of these for my HT but don't know how to wire it such that I have one subwoofer and two butt-kickers. Can anyone guide me as to how I can connect more than one subwoofer to a 5.1/7.1 AVR? Is having a .2 AVR a must?

Buttkickers are same as subwoofers, instead of a speaker cone it will have a plate that can be attached to your sofa. It will have an amplifier and a line in. Use a Y splitter from your LFE out and feed the buttkicker amp, done. enjoy..

The adapter has inherent advantages over the PS3 remote as it can control your other devices. So for a small investment you will ahve total control via one remote. can't ask for more esp. if you are a control freak such as I when I like to have the remote close to me at all times for channel surfing.

definetly wud like to hear and feel the bass . my velodynes are doing a very good job now , but know my eyes are on the def tech trinity , need to collect some cash for it:D

as connecting 2 subs to an avr , i have tried but then the results were not too good , i wud prefer a single powerful sub and may be a couple of butkicker, but then i wudnt recommend splitting the signal , i think splitting signals cud degrade the sound quality

what wud be the cost of these butkickers ??

that was very informative , but still cudnt figure out on the connection aspects

is it designed to use only under sofas? can it be used on recliner made of cloth (easy chair) ?

This requires an amp (transducer rating is 50-100w) the spk-out can be connected to the spk terminals. This can be mounted to the structure\frame at the back-bottom side to get the maximum feel of the shake. Turn upside down your sofa and check for the frames or crossbars to the frame. Else you can make a small cross bar (preferably a flat one) connecting the two extreme end frames. Anyways a firm surface is required to mount this otherwise the vibrations will get nullified by the movement of the shaker unit itself.

Thanks Marsilians, this product is jsut perfect and is definitely on my "To buy" list for its convenience. Once I configure my Logitech 525 to work with my other devices, I will have two remotes including the PS3's(Still one too many). Right now, I have bought so many toys in the last one month that I am trying to settle down. Have to learn tweaks and settings for these to get the best PQ and SQ.

@cmsajith: Could you please explain the connection aspects? Is there a workaround other than splitting signals?

Hi all & Santhosh,

Just an link for everybody comment on acoustic treatment for wall... based on this is it worth spending MORE for our brick/concrete walls for our HT.. I got this link while searching for analysing acoustical treatment is needed or not required for my next year omr flat which is fully built by reinforced concrete/ No brick walls.:) In that they have made a point for concrete/brick walls.

Last this may be applicable only for studio monitors? Or properly placed loud speakers Not requrire acoustical treatment.

Correct me.

There wont be any performance degradation if you split the LFE line. Another way is to use the line out from the sub itself, if it is a low pass.

I watched Gladiator(HD version) on wednesday. We had some guests over and what started as a demo of one fighting scene ended in us watching the entire movie. Everyone including myself thoroughly enjoyed the AV experience. I do not have dedicated Home Theater seats yet, just an existing sofa. We were able to accomodate six people comfortably using additional beanbags and chairs. Anything more, and it start getting crowded. Made me wish I had another four feet length. But was that we are only four of us at home, so nothing to worry. However, there is one big cause for worry apart from upgrade fever and other things AV.

The problem is that while we are in the HT, we are totally cut off from the outside world. Actually this is a great thing, and this is how one should enjoy movies, music etc. However, in an ideal world, we would like to keep a tab on whats happening outside without getting distracting too much.

Because of this problem, we are unable to watch a movie in one stretch. Either my wife or I have to excuse ourselves. We are affected by this problem in atleast three ways:
1) My wife and I have a one year old son and we need to keep a constant eye on him. If he is awake, he will not sit in one place(typical of kids of that age:)) and while he is sleeping, we would like to know when he cries or wakes up. Ofcourse, he cannot sleep inside due to the sound.
2) Most of the movie-watching happens in the night and with the current crime scene, we are also worried about security issues
3) We can't hear the door-bell - just a matter of adding an additional calling bell and link it to the door-bell.
4) Others in the house can't get my attention - I fixed this by getting us a wireless calling bell by GM. Works well, has a light as well. So all good in this aspect.

Obvious Solution that came to my mind: A DIY monitoring system. Since I did not require something very feature-rich. I decided to use some existing web cams and a laptop. I googled and found some freewares that offered features including motion detection, alerts etc. My plan is to have a spare baby bed just outside the HT and monitor it with the webcam and a laptop inside the HT. Distracting but important:). I would address the security aspect next based on the success of this one.

While I was gathering more info to do this myself, I noticed that xtreamer(yes, the Media Player) is coming up with some VFM product shortly. It looks quite promising from the little description that they have shared. Read on....

Soon you will be introduced with our new Xtreamer PTZ IP CAM based on H.264 1080p resolution. the Xtreamer cam will allow you watch it on your TV throught your media player and it provides you with an easy and economical network video recording solution. By connecting Xtreamer or Axis IP cameras to the network and configuring the cameras in the eTRAYz you can watch the live-view of monitored area on a real-time basis, and schedule video recording in Continuous Recording Mode, Motion Detection Mode, or Alarm Recording Mode. In addition, you will be able to review the recorded video clips by searching or browsing the convenient Time Line bar. The eTRAYz supports upto 99 IP cameras .

Link on the xtreamer site: Xtreamer.Net - FAQ

It is not like we did not think about this when we were building this dedicated room but we under-estimated the problem. It is also temporary in some ways but it is affecting us now and we need a solution.

So, in the interim, I need a workaround. Does anyone else have similar issues? Please give me ideas...Thanks in advance

Santhosh,

Don't we get baby monitors?

For your DIY effort, an wireless microphone( spy microphone) switched on near to your kids bed is sufficient / Already u have kept the calling bell inside ur HT, which u will know anybody dinging it outside / Keep double door to secure ur front door and dont worry about crime---- OR simple DIY- Please ask ur wife to stay outside the HT and take care of the kid and ur house...:D

Automate like this and U will never watch film and u will be interested only in surveilance of your house sitting in your HT room. X10 4 Wireless Security Cameras System - NOW ONLY $269.99

2) Most of the movie-watching happens in the night and with the current crime scene, we are also worried about security issues
Burglary, theft does not happen till it happens. We are not paranoid about home-security. Just that I am a "home improvement" kind of chap and it wouldn't harm to have surveillance. Would it?

Santhosh,

Problem is we can't hear them while watching a movie. Do you get ones with a display too in India?

Please ask ur wife to stay outside the HT and take care of the kid and ur house...:D
If I even try this, I will be the one outside the HT taking care of my son:lol:.
About the link you provided, I expect the xtreamer solution to be more VFM
