My 2016 Model Polo GTS TSI comes with a MIB II infotainment system but it has no CAr Play.
The 2017 model came with wired car play and probably MIB 3.

1. Has anyone with the Polo GT TSI 2016 model upgraded their audio system to support wired or wireless car play ? If so with with system and does it need any special wireless adaptor ? I suppose MIB 2 can not support wireless car play.

2. In doing so were you able to retain the steering control for music and volume controls. And retain all other system functionality of the head unit.

Thanks

What is your budget? Installing a new car stereo should not be a problem which has support for Car Play.
Use the below link to look up Pioneer India website for systems that will work in your car.

Not sure about Bangalore but there are usually installation shops that have the kits needed to do a clean install.
These include the steering control integration for most car models including integration of cameras etc.

while the temptation to go aftermarket is strong, I would request that you look at an upgrade of later models of the VW headhunts. VAG (Volkswagen Audi group - VW, Audi, Skoda, et al) units are interoperable with minimal coding and it's not too difficult to do. plus if it's a can bus model you could get access to a whole lot of additional features. You should also look at car specific forums in India. and read the build threads. In some cases it could be as simple as a firmware upgrade... I don't have experience of VAG cars, But I do have another brand German car and I can assure you that it's all modular. I've been there and done that.

Have been looking for a stock head unit RCD340 or the SMARTY Trend 2K Ultra-Premium head unit. But not aware of any sources. Any help with this is appreciated.

I have recently installed PIONEER DMH-AP6650BT in my hexa car , and it works flawlessly for wireless Android auto and Apple car play. This pioneer model has DSP and advanced audio tunning EQ curves , Listening position , time alignment etc.. so sound Quality also great.
This player will definitely fit in your Polo GTS TSI , with correct frame installed.

I hav installed components in the front and coaxials in the back.

The Head unit sounds good with coaxial speakers with direct connection with HU , but if you need more power then choose component speakers in the front (but amp is essential).
My previous car was VW polo and i have installed there a kenwood touch HU system , and it was fitting to the car perfectly. So u can choose any.

If you can spend more money then go with High Resolution player model in pioneer DMH-Z series or alpine high resolution players, they will be more pricey > 60K.

Forgot to mention , All Recent aftermarket Head units support all steering wheel controls , you need CANBUS or similar adapter for doing it.
But You will be loosing some of the controls from OEM head unit that have some settings with car.For example in my OEM Headunit there are some light control settings , after replacing with pioneer HU i lost those controls. Since its not crucial and important i decided to replace.
For you If those settings are important and crucial dont change the oem head unit. Though some CANBUS , interfaces support oem car settings through aftermarket head unit. Check on this.

If your oem unit is touch screen based , then there are some adapters available to make wireless Andriod Auto/ Apple car play to integrate with oem head unit. Check these before u replace the HU.

If you are also looking to improve sound quality with OEM hu , then u need to install DSP processor which will have all audio enhancement features EQ curves , Listening position , time alignment ..etc for each channel. And u can install new speakers and amp hooked up from DSP. This way your SQ will be improved with OEM Headunit , and not loosing any of the Car control features. But setting up this will be slightly expensive.

Thanks, yes I am an audiophile and am keen on good sound quality. I have used Soumatrix Xtase speakers that are full range speakers specifically for the polo GT. Would like to retain those.

just upgrade to rcd 340 which will give you stock feel and wired carplay and maybe get an adapter for wireless car play this is what i did to my polo gt tsi 2014

it might be very tempting to go for unbranded devices. but please avoid them and choose carefully the branded stuff as well. Phones are directly connected to these devices and might share all sorts of data while being connected to 5G networks.
