Personally I have watched less than half of these films, mostly ray, benegal, nihalani, mishra, guru dutt, ghose and a few from the other filmakers.I would love to watch the films of Adoor and Shahji.

DD Loksabha shows a regional Indian film with subtitles every Saturday and repeats it on Sunday. It is the best way to watch regional cinema given that most of the better films which are shown in Indian festivals don't even get a DVD release.

^ I thought this thread was only for non-hindi movie man!

The original intention was to discuss non mainstream, non formula cinema from across the world.Cinema which dosen't get the same amount of publicity or screening space as the big budget films from Hollywood and Bollywood. But later I felt that there was no need to set barriers or narrow down the thread to only certain kinds of cinema.I also felt that I had been guilty of focusing only on a certain kind of cinema which prevailed between 1925-1975 and had unfairly ignored or mocked other kinds of films in which I had lost interest and consequently even a connection with.
I will stay with my Tarkovsky's,Bergman's and Bresson's but would welcome members posting on any kind of film in any language....:)

I will share my impressions about Adoor,Aravindan and Shaji.
I consider Adoor as the greater film maker of the lot.His firstfilm Swayamwaram(1972,a film influenced or inspired by italian neorealistic cinema) was like a breath of freshair at that time. His most significant work is of course Elippathayam(Mousetrap) .Mukhamukham was a much talked about film because of its percieved criticism of communism.Anantharm was an interesting film mixing fantasy into the narration.Mathilukal and Vidheyan were adaptations of famous literary works of Vaikom Muhammed Basheer(One of the giants of Malayalam literature) and of Zacharia. At the time of release Vidheyan evoked plenty of discussion about the directors right to make changes to the storyline .
I personally consider only Elippathayam as significant.
Aravindan--- Aravindan was the creator of perhaps the greatest graphicnovel written in India.OK I havnt read any other nor am I aware of.Cheriya manushyarum valiya lokavum(Small men Big world). His films are hmmmmm interesting .It was in reaction to the prevailing style of the commercial cinema. So the equation was like this.Commercial is FAST -my film will be SLOW.
My take--I dont consider him a great filmmaker merely an interesting one.His style didnt come out of the requirements of the theme(Like it is for Tarkovskys long lingering takes in the opening scenes of Sacrifice for instance).
Shji n karun
Was Aravindans cinematographer. Then became a director himself. There are lot of interesing shots in his films but not much more than that.
I find him as someone very smart in a business kind of way who makes his cinema primarily for a western audience(read festivals). His images are chosen carefully to appeal to outsiders as authentic India. In fact one of my friends said that if one more brass pot rolls I will scream.
This is my personal opinion.

the background score of motorcycle diaries was written by Gustavo Santaolalla the same guy who wrote for brokeback mountain, babel, amores perros. a double oscar winner who lately scored for kiran raos first feature film "dhobi ghat" by amir khan productions. releasing soon.

last year at marienbad 1961

a films plot is simple or difficult allows the viewer to construct a story mentally. but marienebad is different its story is impossible to determine. this film has only a plot with no single consistent story for us to infer. film is careful not to give us clues to help establish clear connections.
this film will fascinate or will frustrate you..

like in "hiroshima mon amor" alain resnais plays with the memories!

YouTube - Last Year at Marienbad Trailer

Hiroshima Mon Amour / Night and Fog both deal with memory and forgetting.....and mankind's inability to comprehend or speak about 20th century horror's like the bombing of Hiroshima and the Nazi concentration camps.
Last Year At Mareinbad and Muriel pushed the boundaries of cinema narrative even further.
I have watched all the 4 films several times.Personally I liked Hiroshima and Night... but I found the other two films more frustrating than fascinating.
The French Nouvelle Vague was for long my favorite cinema period, but the French, when they get hold of an idea, can go on and on and on,to the point where the original idea is lost and all that is left behind is dazed incomprehension.I can no longer sit through a French film where they start dissecting a man/woman relationship.Watched TOO many of them (and really had a great time) but now I am even more confused about this relationship, than I was before I logged into M/S Rohmer,Resnais,Godard,Truffaut and Chabrol:)

Triumph of the Will (German: Triumph des Willens)
Auschwitz Inside the Nazi State
Nazi Hunters
Nuremburg Trials

The Nazis A Warning From History
Alfred Hitchcock Documentary On Nazi Holocaust
Auschwitz Forgotten Evidence
Night And Fog
The Yellow Star

^ Horrors of WWII makes me think.

Thanks man, i thought i was done with this genre but there is always more to everything :)
The best film on the Holocaust is apparently Shoah. It is a 9 year long epic. I do plan to watch it some time.

Thanks, googling it now.
A list of Holocaust films.Have watched a few of them.
The Holocaust movies list
Alain Resnai's Night and Fog and Lajos Koltai's Sorstalansag (Fateless ) are remarkable films.

Polish Cinema | Warsaw Life

Watching films from Poland and Hungary in a festival venue has been one of the highpoints of my life as a 'cinephile' :)

For me the great nations for Cinema are Japan,France,Italy,Spain,Germany,Hungary,Poland,Germany,Sweden,Russia and China.I can comfortably live with not ever watching another movie made in India or the United States.
I know this is not a commonly held perception.Simply the way my personal preference has evolved over a lifetime of watching films.
