hi guys i am new to the forum.i am looking to buy my first complete home theatre system.i am currently using a basic 5.1 edifier da-5000 home theatre which is attached to my pc.it is a basic system with no reciever and now i want to buy a real good system with a separate av reciever and having all the latest functions to enjoy my music, xbox and movies.
So after reading a lot of good things about the new onkyo hts 3300 i decided to visit a shop which deals with home theatres.the guy couldnt give me the demo of this system but said it is best bang for the buck.but he mentioned me another onkyo model the hts 5300.i read about the 5300 also in this forum but i could not conclude as which one to buy.this is where my confusion starts.

I am getting the 3300 for rs25000 and for the 5300 he quoted me rs53000.i am willing to spend rs53000 also if there is significant difference between the two.but then i think that if i spend rs53000 on the onkyo i may be missing on some other good brands which may have better system at this price point.so look iam soo confused:lol:

now i want you guys to please advise me which system to buy. i am inclined towards the 3300 for its great value for money but i fear if i am missing some great deal by not spending rs25-30000 more.my budget is upto rs60000.but it is kinda flexible .i can spend a little more too if there is something very great but if i am geeting sufficient features for lower price like in the 33oo then i will not overspend.kindly tell me if the 3300 will be sufficient for my bedroom which is 18*14.

oh i have written soo much.sorry guys!!
but please take a while to reply me.i basically need a 5.1 system with great sound having the latest features.i basically listen to punjabi songs and the popular english ones like from akon etc and i watch a lot of dvd rips of english movies and the other thing is my xbox.
the things for which i may buy the 5300 overthe 3300 is
1.passive sub.i love the bass and want t to be nice and punchy.i doubt if it will satisfy me.what u say?
2.dolby pro logic 2 is missing.i dont know what sort of difference will it make?
3.extra 2 speakers but it doesnt bother me much
4.the 5300 also have a little bit more power than 3300
please also suggest me some other good system upto rs 60000.
thanksss!!!!

1. The Edifier you have is good, I have heard. So the Onkyo may be an upgrade or a degrade. Don't expect a night and day difference with either of the Onkyos.

2. You can get Onkyo 6xxx/7xxx for about 40-50k from shopyourworld.com.

3. If you can spend over 50k, I recommend you to buy a Denon/Yamaha receiver for around 20k and spend the rest on Polk RM6750 (movies), Wharfedale(Music in movies), 2.0 Monitor Audio/B&W if primarily music.

4. I RECOMMEND (50%+ music)
Marantz 5003 20k
B&W 686/685 OR Monitor Audio RX1 About 40k
Total around 60-65k

I RECOMMEND(Mainly movies)
Marantz NR1501/Yamaha 465/467 20-30k
Polk Audio RM6750/Mission HT Package/Energy package About 20-30k
Total 50-60k

Polk TSI doesn't compare with Wharfedale, at least not at this price point.

And besides, he can't even afford Polk TSI FS with his budget.

What he can do is buy Wharf 9.2/9.1 etc and make a 5.1 setup.

bose 301 gives excellent performance as compared to polk tsi series. for centre polk cs 10 is a good option

Onkyo doesn't compare with Bose. Bose doesn't compare with Polk.

Most Indians prefer Wharfedale to Polk.

With this budget, stick to Wharfedale I would say.

Get 9.2 + 9.1/9.0 + Center + Sub if you have the budget

Onkyo doesn't compare with Bose. Bose doesn't compare with Polk.

I personally had demoed Onkyo HT-S3300 against Bose 3-2-1 GS. The sound from Bose was in no comparison to Onkyo - this was the reaction from a group of 3 people (including me). We were waiting for Bose' audio impact to come to us during the demo...but....the demo was over without any impact!

ya even i have read a lot of reviews which have praised the onkyo.but is it wise for me to go for the onkyo 5300 over the onkyo 3300 coz i need a good tight punchy bass and good over all clarity.or should i look to bulid a good combo as techboy suggested.
please advise
cheers

As I said, for 50k there are many better options that Onkyo.

You can go for Karman Kardon AVR155 + JBL speakers, start around 20k-25k and goes up to like a lakh.

You will get something really good around 50k.

Although for your budget you should be assembling your own Wharfedales/Sonodynes.

Ya i am now trying to build my system but am not quite sure if i will end up having a good deal as so many options kind of confuse me.but i will go with my ears and will surely audition every setup.lets just hope for the best

Hi guys
Yesterday i audiioned mordaunt short genie 5.1 package and it sounded very good with both music and movies.together with ca340 av rec it will cost me 70k.what is your take on ms genie?

I would say HTS 5300 would suffice most of your needs if you are looking @ HTIB.

I think your confusion about which system to buy is because you didn't get the exact the difference between 5.1 / 7.1 HT.

A very good 5.1 speaker system (Separate components) is better than a 7.1 HTIB system anyday. Let me clear your doubt. Most of the DVD u buy in India or in Rental store has 90% 5.1 content. Itz very rare that you find a quality 6.1 / 7.1 encoded DVD's.

If you listen to a 5.1 DVD on a 7.1 System, the only benefit you are getting is that the there are several sound modes in all the receiver that expnad the 5.1 - 7.1. I have an Onkyo 7.1 HTIB, it uses the Dolby function to expand it.

If i am listening to Dolby 5.1 source then it will be Dolby EX in 7.1 Mode
If i am listening to DTS 5.1 source, then it will be DTS + Dolby EX on 7.1 Mode.

The benefit is good, but not desirable. You can anyways check that when u audition yourself a 5.1 source on a 7.1 system.

i do understand the difference between the two.at this stage after going through the forum and auditioning a few systems my confusion is whether to build a system with floorstanders as fronts or go for a sat/sub combination like mordaunt short geniewhich i fairly like.the problem is i love to have a sub and if i have floorstanders than not only the budget will increase it will also be an overkill for my room measuring 16*12 .is it better to buy a sub sat combination and let the sub handle the lower frequencies rather than have floorstanders.i love bass and want it tight and deep with both music aand movies.what you think and do give your take on ms genie.the crossover for genie would be 120 hz.whatsort of difference will that make.need advise.

FS aren't an overkill for a 16x12 place.

Forget about FS. to get good speakers you need a receiver plus speakers budget about a lac before you move on to the FS which are really worth buying.

When you can buy a MA RX1 for 40k, the point in getting a FS is only if you can spend as much if not more.

IMO, FS are any day better than sub-sat system. If you are short on space then you can go for it. Otherwise look for FS as this can entertain you very much.

Now i can recommend 2 FS speakers that i have heard may times and can firmly say they are one of the better products for money.

1. Sonodyne FS 2605 V2 (3 Way speaker) - 24K. it is very gud for movies and music also, a tad bright. But if u match it with right amplifier(warm) it will def sound good.

2. Mission M35i (3 Way speaker) - 32K. It is also very good.

3. Sub woofer u can go for Sonodyne SLF 200Ai - 23K (With remote) Or Roar 210 - 17K.

Audition them in your city if you can find a dealer and decide.

Ya i think for good FS for 5.1 setup the budget must be around 1 lac in luding a rec too.but my budget for the whole setup is not more than 60-70k and am getting ms genie for 70k and they sounded very well too me.can anyone review this system or give other options within this budget.

Not necessarily a Lac. At half the price you can build a good system. Depends on whatz your preference for the brand. I recently suggested Sonodyne 5.1 package for 55K ( Sonus FS 2605 - 24K + Sonus Center Channel - 5K + Dipole surrounds - 9K + Roar Subwoofer 210 - 17K) + an used Onkyo Receiver (TX SR 505 - 7.1 Receiver) for 10K to my friend who had the same budget. Totally 65K.
