I had purchased a High Definition Philips CRT Television 29PT-8836 way back in the year 2006 and to my surprise the video quality, colour and contrast quality of this TV is way ahead than many of the current generations LCD and Plasma TVs. So I thought we should bebate on which is a better technology CRT, LCD or Plasma and hence started this thread.

Earlier in the Philips TV is used to get a image shade on the outline of the video, but i solved it by addind ferrite beads on the entire video cables of the TV (yes my elder brother was a Telvision Technician earlier). This improved the video quality by leaps and bounds and the sharpness, contrast, colour quality and purity will put all the current age TVs to shame.

Will like to hear from you guys to with your experiences.

Let me know when you are selling it. I am looking for a CRT as my TV viewing is minimal and I too find LCD very inferior for SD content

Thanks

Its not surprising that CRT's fare better in SD cuz they were designed for it, HDTV's cannot make up for the dth crap signals any better. Its like hooking a gramophone on to a digital receiver and we expect it to make it better :)...

The actual problem is we are still stuck with SD ...

Very well said. :clapping: but thats precisely the point - its not absolute supreme superiority we are looking at, but practical viewing enjoyment in the real world .

There aren't any HD CRTs being produced now, why is it in the comparison? Your CRT is an extinct breed (for all the wrong reasons!)

There aren't any SD LCD/Plasma TVs and there aren't any HD CRTs in the market now. Good for the pockets of the multinational companies.. What we want was never the part of the equation.. It was always what the multinationals could provide with limited R&D budget.

Having said that CRTs are anyday better for SD and HD. Just that they are not produced anymore to push the sales of LCDs and plasmas..

CRTs are way better or best than any other technology in terms of PQ, contrast, sound (beacuse of box design), refresh rate, picture depathness, and obviously durability.

Where they lack are 1080p, screen size, weight, portability, and latest connectors like HDMI and no upgrades from companies.

Tech companies are after making profits and they are getting from flat screen only through premiums people are willing to spend for new technology likings.

If any company decides to upgrade their CRTs to 1080p and HDMI (I am pretty sure they can very well do it, if they can make other so many things) it will be game changer in terms of PQ. but for obvious reasons they will never do it.

For PQ I would suggest that you compare only the same size TVs and of a similar (real terms) price range. I would say compare the best 21-22" LED/LCDs with the best 21" CRTs, or 27", or 29"/32" etc.

Hmm, interesting information, as most of the viewers compare a higher size LCD/ Plasma with a smaller size CRT and try to judge on the video quality.

Have all of us considered modern day plasma before outrightly rejecting of flat screen TVs. Agreed that CRTs have good contrast and color reproduction but HD plasmas are far superior than CRT TVs in terms of resolution. I find these at par with CRTs in color management, almost at par in contrast and refresh rate. And the best part is, these panels have unnoticeable flickering, which is a limitation in CRTs.

For SD transmission in 4:3 format, the size of the picture if viewed without stretching is almost the same, for a 32 inch LCD/Plasma as compared to a 21" CRT.

I have a 29inch Sony CRT, 32 Inch Sony LCD V Series and 50 Inch Plasma LG Full HD,

Rating Goes like this.

For Sound Quality.

1. Sony CRT.
2. LG Plasma
3. Sony LCD

For SD COntent
1. Sony CRT. ( No match Wins out right)
2. LG Plasma ( Okish)
3. Sony LCD ( pathetic)

For HD Content

1. LG ( Amazing)
2. Sony CRT would be good via component cable. Have not checked.
3. Sony LCD ( Pathetic)

Now it boils to this

I can live with a SD content on Plasma and HD is amazing.

Will never go back to LCD ever again.

For SD no one can beat CRT but options are limited and no newer connectivity options and it being 4:3 Limits the technology.

How many persons watch a 32" (or for that matter any size) LCD without filling the whole screen!!

I have a Sony 46HX800, and the PQ is not inferior to the CRT it replaced (and from what I gather, there are many even far better TVs available). Blacks and whites are pretty good, so is the brightness. Of course the resolution etc. are far higher in this LCD/LED, and so is the screen size and overall experience.

All the time it is in the stretched mode, but can't really see excessive pixelisation in most transmission. The smoothness is far more than the smaller CRT it replaces and does not have any vertical lines or horizontal scanning issues too. Nor does it have any irritating flicker, or harmful x-rays, more elec. consumption, more heat, more space,..... etc.

I use the pillarbox mode to watch 4:3 SD content on both my 23" LG Monitor TV and on the my 47" LED screen. I personally hate the distortion caused by the 16:9 conversion.

As far as seeing compression artifacts is concerned, the 21" CRT display hardly displays any, while the same is very clear on even the 23" LCD. But off late, I have started observing them on the 21" CRT. In past I never looked for those and maybe did not see them much. On the 47" LED display, the artifacts are so bad that I mostly do not watch SD TV on that screen.

All the TVs use a Tata Sky connection, so that might be the major culprit here. What source do you use to get SD content for your TV?
