CRT vs LCD Vs Plasma

How many persons watch a 32" (or for that matter any size) LCD without filling the whole screen!!

1.People who don't like watching sports and finding the football or any other ball appear like a egg,
instead of sphere will watch in the native 4:3 mode.
2. Those who wan't to see their fav star appear fatter than they acually are, :)
will stretch the image and see.

Why always this comparing of different technologies? Let me try and give aam jaanta type explanation.

CRT vs Plasma vs LCD is like Hero Honda Splendor vs Harley Davidson vs Hayabusa.
On Indian roads (= SD transmission) Hero Honda Splendor is best.
On foreign roads (= HD transmission) Harley Davidson and Hayabusa will rule. Splendor will give same type of ride on foreign road as on potholed Indian roads (= will not go above 80kmph without putting your life in grave danger)
Like this, CRT is optimized for SD signals. These two have been co-existing for decades. CRT will not be able to show you all the glorious details of HD signal, but will show you more or less the same picture as a SD signal from a HD source.
Plasma and LCD having higher resolution are not optimized for SD. But they can show you greater details in a high definition signal. Try viewing the digital photos you took on your digicam on a CRT and then see if you can detect that coffee stain on your uncle's shirt in the picture. True CRTs have better colour reproduction and contrast, but if pinpoint accuracy is what you are looking for then what you really need is a good CRT monitor not a CRT TV.
Yes we all feel nostalgic about these good old CRTs but was not there a similar reaction initially to the digital camera with professionals turning up their noses and dismissing them as toys for click-happy amateurs??

I use the pillarbox mode to watch 4:3 SD content on both my 23" LG Monitor TV and on the my 47" LED screen. I personally hate the distortion caused by the 16:9 conversion.

As far as seeing compression artifacts is concerned, the 21" CRT display hardly displays any, while the same is very clear on even the 23" LCD. But off late, I have started observing them on the 21" CRT. In past I never looked for those and maybe did not see them much. On the 47" LED display, the artifacts are so bad that I mostly do not watch SD TV on that screen.

All the TVs use a Tata Sky connection, so that might be the major culprit here. What source do you use to get SD content for your TV?

I have a Tata Sky+ HD. But then most of the transmission is SD only. 4-5 channels only in HD.

The experience on Star Cricket HD is definitely far superior to the SD Star cricket. The other DTH providers with HD might be doing a better job, but TATA is also pretty decent. I haven't compared them, or even seen another HD transmission, so this is only hearsay :-).

Thank you so much for posting this! I have saved 40k at least by not purchasing a plasma/LCD. I would have been completely in the dark and uninformed otherwise since I don't view any Ads on any medium. Will pick up the 29" end of month when I'm back from travel.

For SD transmission in 4:3 format, the size of the picture if viewed without stretching is almost the same, for a 32 inch LCD/Plasma as compared to a 21" CRT.

No! you are wrong!!

21" CRT in 4:3 is equivalent to approx. 26" TV in 16:9, without stretching.

Similarly, 32" in 16:9 is equal to approx. 26" in 4:3.

Yes!! we are nostalgic about the good old Amby or the Premier Padmini. Or the rickety bus we traveled long distances by in heat (now we have posh new AC buses). Or...........!! ;)

I am selling off Philips 29 inches CRT with 100hz and Progressive scan (model 29PT8836/94). The PQ is unbeatable as far as CRT is concerned. Many forum members have discussed it in the past. It is in excellent working condition.

I vote for CRT.:D

Hi, CTR is made for SD while flat panels are made for HD. You will get best images on a CRT watching SD which cant be compared to any flat panel tv. HD content delivers resolution of 720p/1080i/1080p which are not supported by any CRT TV, hence you need flat panels tv to view HD content. Also HDTVs will upscale the SD content to its native resolution which might make the picture more pixelated with noise.

What most people do not realize is that they buy expensive LCD/Plasma TVs to watch SD and then complain of picture quality. That is going to happen since CRT is best suited to watch SD.

In my case will it mean that i would be better off with 29" CRT? I dont have a tv connection and dont have any plan to get one in near future. I watch a movie once a week and that too is either vcd or dvd which i get on rental. Even though i can easily buy full HD TV, I really doubt whether I will be willing to buy blue ray movies. I dont download movies from net either.

So is the CRT Best suited for me? What do you suggest?

For your use that CRT is enough. However if you want to watch hd movies you should upgrade to hd tv. Once you start watching HD content you will never like to go back to SD. Give it a try. Download a 2-3gb brrip and feel the difference between dvd and hd.

I dont want spend time in 2-3 gb downloads neither i am in mood to spend on unlimited internet access.
I know my weaknesses and thats why i am deliberately trying to stay away from HD Video:D

In terms of audio, it is like being happy with a mono cassette player :)

Seems that you missed by previous post. I dont have tv connection and no plans to get it at least till my kids pass SSC Level. My son is just 2 year old. So no tv for at least 14 years :( . Thats a long period and I hope i can stick to my decision. My viewing usage is limited to 1 movie/week or less.
