D550/VT20/ST30/LED - Confused on which one to buy ?(<80k)

VT20 as BLASTO said is very similar(even better than) to ST30 and best part is it is 25K-30K lesser than ST30. So on VFM basis VT20 is a good choice if you happen to get hold of one, as stock everywhere are vanishing. Read this thread and my search to get a VT20 in tamil nadu.

ST30 - lesser crosstalk in 3D , no floating blacks , same filter as VT20 , one 3D glass lesser than VT20 , white peak is twice higher than VT20
But it has fluctuating Brightness (but fixed i suppose)

If you want to save 25K and get something like Bluray player or extra pair glasses , Get VT20 .

Vs Panasonic TC-P50VT20 - Panasonic TC-P50ST30 Plasma 3D HDTV Review

as for your question ..

since i couldnt find a VT20 for around 75K , I went for ST30. I am not sure whether its worth the extra money , as i myself going to first time own a plasma and i am moving from a 2007 LCD (720p) TV. So anything will look awesome for me..

I don't think the comparison offered on the televisioninfo site is fair to VT20. Here are a few points which seem off.
- Black Level (HDTVTest is the best source i can think of with their Klein meter): VT20 measures 0.009 cd/m2 and ST30 measures 0.028 cd/m2; Incidentally, CNET did a long term test on black level rise on the VT20 and it's final risen black level is still expected to be on par if not better than the ST30.
- As per CNET and also noted by chadb, the ST30 is actually a little dim.

In the above review mentioned by u, Chad has compared ST30 with VT25. Are VT25 and VT20 same ?

Also, he has too given that if one is concerned about 3D and rising black, the choice is simple---ST30.

I also consider ST30 better but is it worth the extra money ?

1) VT25 is US version of VT20(European/Asian version). Both are same.

2) 3D was not my primary concern when buying TV. I did not demo any 3D. I cannot view 3D for more than 15 mins. IF I were looking for a 3D TV, I COULD have gone for the ST30. Reading from multiple places (and not actually demoing 3D), looks like ST30 jacks up brightness in 3D mode to compensate the dimness of the glasses. (Meaning, with the same settings, 3D appears brighter without glasses than 2D) Owners to confirm.

3) Rising black is panasonic's brightness compensation (to compensate panel ageing) algorithm (derived from kuro) gone wrong. The increase is from 0.009 to 0.013 in the first year (refer HDTVTest/AVSForum). In the same rate, after 6 years, it will reach ST30's blacks, 10 years it will reach D550's level. But a 6-10 year old panel will have lesser brightness, so the compensation algorithm will be actually 'compensating' to an extent rather than being a problem. So the panel could be black still (Iam only speculating here). All this if the rate of increase is lenear but no one knows for sure. If panasonic got it right (ie compensated for exponential ageing in the start of lifetime), this rise won't be linear.

Hope it helps.

Thanks..:)

It is supposed to arrive now and they changed to tomorrow...(reason PM me.. :ohyeah: )

For me vt20 or st30 , anything is going to be spectacular .. first 1080p - FHD TV.. And plasma.. :licklips:

Just to give an example , My dell L502x has a excellent panel , its black level is 0.2 cd/m2 ie 10 times higher than ST30 which is at 0.02.

for me blacks on my laptop are simply the best i have seen so far , so anything better than that should be awesome for me.

you guys should by now know what kind of LCD TV i am currently watching

will post my thoughts as soon as the plasma arrives ..:yahoo:

News for VT20 Seekers, Bangalore :)

15-20 more VT20 liquidated to croma...

The panasonic contact says that there has been more demand for VT20 from croma as well as other side since your purchse. So liquidating more into croma. Not sure if it was really a compliment or a jibe at me :).
Looks like they have sold all the 12 that was remaining with croma last friday and have added 15 more :)

Dealer says, due to increase in demand they're also planning to increase the price to 89k from the 79k offer given to croma :). Just told him that it would be unfair to the practise in other countries other than india.

Dont worry we should finish it at 75k and try for even less.

The point is that "forums work for the benefit of people and benefits can be seen". Thanks to all you experts..

Since we've had such an indepth discussion here, out of curiosity, if you had to choose between the 50VT20 and 50ST30 (Same price with 2x 3D Glasses) - which one would you guys opt for?

I'm going to go Demo the 2 today at the B2B brand store today, but still ... from a pure videophile perspective, considering HD and PS3 gaming, what would be the preferred choice?

50VT20 hands down .. I couldnt get Vt20 as stocks were totally nil in Tamil Nadu.

Vt20 for 65K or so is a solid Plasma.
