DAC... Why do I need it?

Not really. All of these are about usecases on using a DAC in a Home Theater setup. The DAC has to be for 2 channels in a multi channel world. So it is not just about which DAC I buy, but usecases on how to insert a DAC usefully in an HT setup; still using the same front speakers.
That's great.
But the thread starters question was why does he need an external dac when he already has one in his receiver. So discussing various usecases irrelevant to his chain, in my opinion is going OT.

Srisaikat, I agree to your point. But you can very well copy those files and burn into cds and listen. Even a 45k DAC doesn't show significant difference. While listening through DACs, you might experience slight improvements, but for that you may have to shred quite a hefty dough, say around 1 lac and above. Why bother.

A CD player is really not a solution for people with digital collections. My experiences with DACs are different, a DAC can change entirely your two channel stereo experience, simple as that. You do not need an obscene amount of money invested in the system to perceive the difference either. I prefer to look at it this way, find synergy between your amplifier and speakers, once you are satisfied that they compliment each other put a DAC in the chain or switch between DACs that you can afford. DACs do have their own signatures, no question about it. When you find the right DAC for your setup, your entire two channel experience will change.

The PCM1794 DAC kits are available for as low as 3.5K INR which can be easily assembled with just an transformer and a cabinet. Go for it and it sounds excellent and does not cost a bomb.

Any link.........Me too looking for DAC between PC and SWANM200KII.

I checked the link, no information of the DAC chip used is given and hence seems sub-standard. Also the dynamic range and S/N ratio are not impressive compared to the PCM1794. Its up to you, if you like it buy it. If you ask me, i shall not buy the NuPrime.

The big question here is not if standalone stereo DACs are of better quality than the DAC built into AVRs, but the main issue here is how do you effectively use one to make a tangible & audible difference. How to insert a DAC in the path and still use the rest of the HT system? Unfortunately most receivers would not take out the audio stream from an incoming HDMI signal and pass it out on USB, RCA or optical. So you need a separate source. Also that if you take the output of an external DAC (or CD player) and connect it to one of the inputs of an AVR, most of the benefit is lost. Many AVRs would convert that analog signal back to digital for bass management and other equalization. Even if the AVR has a pure mode, where you do not use the bass management, Audyssey eq, time delays for distance, and other such features, even then the sound improvement is not big enough to compensate for the features that you just gave up. The sound becomes perceptibly lifeless. The AVRs are typically designed to sound good with all these DSP features at work. So you need an analog amp too for any tangible improvement. The final results largely depend on the use case. The only thing that can be reused between the stereo and multi-channel HT system are the two front speakers. If connected correctly, you could use the analog amp for the movies too, which makes a big difference; and also takes us back to page1 of this tread :)

Doesn't PM6005 already have a good built in DAC? Or are you wanting to try out something else? You could try reaching out to FMs in your town and try to listen to the DACs they have.

Thanks dear for suggestion,.

Actually I have just bought the setup. I wanted to add a dedicated cd player
(and I also don't have good cd collection ). However when I approached to the shop Bass N Treble at Delhi sale person there gave me a nice advice that as I don't have a good cd collection then there is no point to have a dedicated cd player instead investing in good dac in the same price range of cd player is more worth as lot of music is available in digital now a days and easily available and also freedom to access lot of music through app like saavan and gaana. so i have just got a philips cd player for the time being (for the few cd i have).

Currently I am playing online radio (saavan /gaana/wynk) through my samsung phone headphone output to the amp. and the outcome/sound is not satisfactory. that is why i want to invest in good dac. let see how much different is there.

Please pm me if anybody have preowned dac in the good condition.

Thanks

Buy Google Chromecast audio, it'll be much useful for Android users with home WiFi.

Chromecast has a inbuilt DAC which is of the same chip as Modi 2 uber ; else you can use a digital out from Chromecast audio to digital inputs of Marantz pm 6005. Play with these two DAC and see if you still need a dedicated DAC. This will be way better than your current situation of playing from headphone out IMHO.

Thanks bro, I think I should go for chormecast audio and see the difference. advice me if I get choremcast then there is no need for dac as it is having same chip as modi 2 as suggested. It means both chormecast and modi 2 have same effect.

Thanks

You need a USB dac. If your device supports otg then it would work quite well. Check out the schiit modi in the for sale section.

Same chip doesn't mean it has the same effect ; the implementation of DAC Chipset is more important than Chipset itself - I just meant that there's a reasonable DAC on board on Chromecast audio, which is worth giving a shot.

You should consider getting a dedicated DAC if you are unhappy with the DAC on Chromecast or Marantz PM 6005 (which has a better DAC implementation out of the two ) - so buy Chromecast Audio play with various features ; listen to both DACs for few months and decide.

Don't connect a USB DAC to your mobile IMHO (in my honest opinion) ; as your mobile will be stuck with hifi system during music playback, rendering it unusable, the whole time. Also the notifications and radio interference will make the experience unbearable. Instead of Modi 2 on classified listings (which isn't a good deal IMHO) , buy a new Modi 2 uber (150$ ~ 10k inr,) from schiit.com if you can get it with someone coming from USA. Modi 2 uber has a host of connectivity options like optical and coaxial along with USB. You can connect a variety of different devices with the connections it offers. But, try using the on board DAC of pm 6005 to the fullest before buying a dedicated DAC. SMSL Sanskrit 6th edition (around 7k) is a best VFM DAC in my opinion and a great starting point if you can't afford Modi 2 uber.

Which site SMSL Sanskrit 6th edition available at 7k?

AliExpress, there's a sale coming up after 3 days, I saw for 7.5k discounted price. Often it Comes for sale On Amazon UK as well, in lightning deals for similar shipped price with customs at 8k.
