Denon DL 103 Cart

A much simpler way is to use spacer on headshell. Irrespective of how you increase the weight at cartridge end, you need to increase counterweight weight.

Try a simple experiment with commonly available items. I measured the weights of coins and they're as follows - 50 paise is 3.76 grams, one rupee is 3.78 grams, two rupees is 4.84 grams and five rupees bronze is 5.96 grams.

Let's assume your current cartridge is 6 grams. Add a two rupees coin to headshell end - let it just stay on top of headshell. Now move your counterweight to see if it can still balance with the added weight. Your total weight is 10.84 grams. Let's assume further that it is able to balance it with the added weight. Now check if there is room to increase the weight at the counterweight end for the tracking force. Let's assume that your cartridge has tracking force of 1.5 grams. Try adding the additional 1.5grams at counterweight (by moving weight closer to pivot).

You actually need 8.5 grams (DL 103 mass) minus your current cartridge weight = 2.5 grams. I don't know if you can get this exact weight to make your experiment more accurate. If the experiment is successful, you can try the 103 in your arm, but it won't be optimal. Later you can add spacer and heavier counter weight to increase effective mass.

Hello 'Phono' devotees, what are the MM cartridges available in the market will yield the nearest sound quality of Denon 103r cart? So that we can eliminate these calculations of the mass of the tonearm, adding suitable counterweight, adding more weight, spacers on the head shell. Then the record should be playable condition without surface noise under the MC cartridge. And it's also said that the MC cartridges are not suitable to our country's climatic condition. Additional expenditure also is there for the step up transformer. After paid all of these pains taking effort: Is it really singing as what it should be when playing Indian pressed , Indian film music and Indian classical music ? If it will not be up to the mark, then, may we go for the best in class, top of the line MM cartridges with minimum worries and easy set ups ? But, is it worth that every effort we pay to bring the sound in MC cartridge as that will be in day and night difference in the sound quality? If so, then we should do try and that will be the blissful hearing and really worth. Friends, please share your experiences of using MC cartridges when playing vinyls of Indian music and reveal your opinions. Thank you.

I have just pulled the trigger on a Denon DL-103R. :yahoo: The price was just too luring to let it go. I paid USD 227 including shipping for this from Ebay. It will be shipped to an acquaintance in USA and will be hand carried to India in about a month.

I will be making a second TT setup and will utilize this cartridge on that. I figured, there isn't much sense in putting this on my current TT which has a low mass arm and might not do justice to this cart. It will help me satisfy the need to get a different TT as well (the upgrade bug just never dies).

Seems a little long term project but at least I have taken the first step here. Reckon will post the news of my second TT soon as well :ohyeah:.
