I think I was one of the early folks on these forums who picked up a Samsung Plasma (there were a couple before me I think). It was a PS42A410 all the way back in 2008. The TV has given excellent service, but recently it stopped switching on. Samsung Customer Care came home, opened it up and said it was a motherboard problem.

4 days later, i.e. yesterday they called and said the motherboard is not available because it is an old model, and they are offering to buy it back at depreciated value. Because it is more than 4 years old, depreciation is 66% and the value they are offering is 34% which amounts to about 19,000 (the price i bought it for was Rs. 55,500). This of course sounds like a very nice and fair deal, but I am just wondering if it's all kosher. Is it a scam? Has anyone else seen/heard of anything like this? I'd love to know. Because they are going to take the TV, give some documentation, and the cheque will be processed in 20 days. So I am just slightly concerned.

Thanks in advance.

You mean depreciation is 56% then. On the whole, if the motherboard cannot be replaced or cannot be repaired, then it is a good deal.

The new school of thought is "replace assemblies; do not fix components". Old school though "find the faulty component, check/replace it". I do not think that any company today hires competent people who look at root cause - for them "if arm is injured, replace the arm" theory applies. I think that you should let a competent electronics repairer (of old school) look at the issue. Sometimes, a fault could be as simple as a blown out capacitor or an IC. Such a person may be able to repair it or not. With the onslaught of miniaturization and embedded/hybrid components, it may still be unrepairable. But at least you have a second opinion. Then you can always sell your TV if TV is indeed not repairable.

Hahaha, so sorry I am an idiot. it's 19k that they're offering. But it's still a good deal for a 4 year old TV and can contribute to a chunk of the price of a new one :) . Seems kosher though. They have documentation and all, so it seems above aboard. I'll edit the first post also.

Well I am in the same boat, My 4yrs old LCD series 5 is suddenly showing horizontal lines. Call to samsung and same story no parts and will buy back.
Now its been more than 20 days and no one has come down to collect the paper work, though received multiple calls that engg will surely come down today.
I hope one day they will surely come!

Samsung buy back policy(as told to me) is depreciation of 18% per year (after 1yr of warranty period) on purchase price.

My room is such that anything bigger than a 42" is too large, by the THX formula. Viewing distance is about 7 1/2 feet to 8 feet. So I have to pick up a 42". I've been going through the forums and the samsung E470 seems to be the best option since I don't want 3D at all.

19K doesn't make sense, with 18% depreciation, it should be 25K or 20K depending on the exact date.

Yes.. A friend of mine had similar problems & the same situation happened...But that was Sony... Could you believe that ? SONY... I was stunned when my friend was offered money to give away the defective product....

He took the money from them, returnd the defective product & bought a Philips LCD, because he lost trust with Sony....

Today common ppl have very high regard for SONY....

Ask anyone about buying a TV, they will tell SONY with their eyes closed.. :ohyeah:

Well i would suggest what just4kix has said In todays world if a component is gone they just replace the board.gone are the days when they used to just repair them.

Ask a local repair guy to have a look at it.Was the fault in image processing board or the power supply board.if its the power supply board its easier to repair provided the guys whos is repairing knows what he is doing.

As far as the deal provided by samsung well thats unheard off, usually companies just wash their hands off atleast in india.Even if you had sold the tv while its was working i doubt you could have got the 19k for it.

Btw long time since you posted in this section :)

Nothing to be perturbed ! Its not a scam at all! Recently my Sammy LCD LA40C530 (1 and 1/2 yr.old model) had a flickering issue, which according to the Samsung Service Centre was an issue related to the whole panel itself and the same- "parts not available". I was offered buyback @ 17% Depreciation value i.e. an offer value of 83%, since my tv was around 1-2 yrs. old. I took no time in providing the essential documentation required for the processing of the cheque..and within 25 days..I got my cheque as was promised by the Samsung Customer Care..So I am thorougly happy!
Again I have owned a Samsung Plasma!

It's been a long time since I posted on HFV at all :) I still remember our pitched plasma/LCD battles :) . Still an LCD user?

And yes I do think it's a very fair deal. I could get it fixed, but the panel itself had developed a slim blue vertical line some months ago, which is the first sign of the panel starting to fail, and in the case of a panel failure i'll get nothing for it, so I am definitely going to take the 19k.

Yeah lol still using lcds . But our battles(i would call them a debate) very friendly and civilized and informative to others ,we always respected each others opinions. :licklips:

If the panel is gone go kaput its better to take the 19k ,but is the 19k a credit note or is its just 19k OFF the MRP of a new samsung purchase?

It's a cheque for 19k in cash. So that's good. And yes of course, those discussions were a lot of fun. I should spent a bit more time on HFV :)

psychotropic, Nice to see you back! 19k seems like a good offer esp if you are looking to get a new TV. But if you dont want to, what jus4kix mentioned would be better.

Edit: just saw the vertical line post. Then, taking the 19k seems to be the smart way out. Btw, I bought a plasma too, Panasonic P42UT30.

Aha! So the panel is also signs of weakening. In that case just jump at the offer.

How's the Panny? and how much did you pay for it? I am confused about whether to go for another panasonic or a samsung. THe sammies seem superior PQ wise, but the 3 year warranty on the pannies is tempting.
