Depreciated Buyback - Samsung Plasma

The Panny is quite good. I found the Samsung 43e450 also quite good. Just that I have harbored a wish to own a Pana plasma and I was getting a full HD, 3D plasma at the same price as the HD ready Samsung.
As for the UT30, its SD upscaling , format support for usb playback( samsungs are best on this count) could be better.

I too went through the same and although samsung by default didnt offer me anything - when I went through a friend - they did ask me if I had the old invoice because they wanted to pay me back the undepreciated amount d th. Well I couldnt find the bill and hence I lost out on the deal. I just sold it for 10K. So just grab the offer and dont bother what they do with that. a 4 year old TV is an ancient relic and 19K is a super bargain IMHO

My room is such that anything bigger than a 42" is too large, by the THX formula. Viewing distance is about 7 1/2 feet to 8 feet. So I have to pick up a 42". I've been going through the forums and the samsung E470 seems to be the best option since I don't want 3D at all.

Believe me you dont want to go by formula. Does not mean that we should go for 50/60 incher when we watch from <6 feet. But take audition. Visit a store where there is no rush (say at odd time...very morning on working day for example.) and see if 50 incher is comfortable to you from 8 feet. I took a long audition (30 minutes at exactly 8 feet) and was able to infer that to me it would be okay and i bought 50 incher. Though i now end up watching right at the end of my room width(=10 feet) its more like 9 feet watching distance and i really love the cinamatic feel it gives. Remember these types of TVs start looking smaller then they are after we become familiar with them. Ask around. My neighbour(43E490) and my colleague(company cubiclemate - 43E470) are now ruing their decisions of not going for 51 incher - even before completing 1 month of usage.

Its your call at the end.

I guess this is one benefit of my habit of never throwing stuff away.

How much did you pay for it? I am actually finding it hard to get a fix on the prices of these things in spite of going through pages and pages of various threads. It must be old age.

You can safely go with a 46" size tv for 8 feet viewing distance since i watch at that distance, any bigger like 50" you may start noticing the pixels, thats the only drawback.

My plasma is now 4+ years old and functioning perfectly well. No lines, no spots, no dead pixels and the blacks are still as deep as ever, touchwood. During casual visits to E-Zone / Croma etc recently, I just happened to enquire about the exchange offers for buying a new TV, hopefully 46" or even 50" :-). The best quote I got was 10K from E-Zone.

Contrast this offer of 10K for a perfectly functioning TV against the offer of 19K for a defective TV !! The answer is obvious.

Of course, formula can only guide you so far and it's personal choice. But I've auditioned all sizes and types of televisions extensively and trust me for the space I have a 51 incher is too big. I even toyed with the idea of downgrading to a 32" LCD but then I chucked that idea :). Of course, there's no way I could spare the budget for a 51" set anyway. I'm a freelance photographer these days (I was a corporate lawyer when I bought the old Sammy), so perspectives are very different :P

Hehe, I just took a measuring tape. THe distance frmo the screen to my head is a shade under 7 feet actually. I do think anything above 43" would be excessive for that.

I think I was one of the early folks on these forums who picked up a Samsung Plasma (there were a couple before me I think). It was a PS42A410 all the way back in 2008. The TV has given excellent service, but recently it stopped switching on. Samsung Customer Care came home, opened it up and said it was a motherboard problem.

4 days later, i.e. yesterday they called and said the motherboard is not available because it is an old model, and they are offering to buy it back at depreciated value. Because it is more than 4 years old, depreciation is 66% and the value they are offering is 34% which amounts to about 19,000 (the price i bought it for was Rs. 55,500).

Recently my Sammy LCD LA40C530 (1 and 1/2 yr.old model) had a flickering issue, which according to the Samsung Service Centre was an issue related to the whole panel itself and the same- "parts not available". I was offered buyback @ 17% Depreciation value i.e. an offer value of 83%, since my tv was around 1-2 yrs. old. I took no time in providing the essential documentation required for the processing of the cheque..and within 25 days..I got my cheque as was promised by the Samsung Customer Care

It's a cheque for 19k in cash.

I find this confusing.

Evidently both the TVs are out of warranty with the former a good 4+ years old. I can understand a rebate on their own brand TV but they are offering cash to buy back an old TV??

Beats me. Am I missing anything?

In this forum we have discussed customer service and tv manufactured companies, well as some forum members who own samsung has responded incase of damage or failure of the product by compensating, wanted to know other companies like panny/sony/toshiba.as many members had complaints wrt to poor service by panasonic has they been compensated like this to them.

Yeah, exactly why I posted this thread to ensure it wasn't some scam. Now I feel reassured. It's good corporate practice I suppose. So kudos to Samsung for that. I'll keep the forum updated on how this pans out.

My experience - just putting as information. no intention of supporting or contrasting this above mentioned possibility.

51E490 from 7 - 9 Feet.

1. When watching Video sourced from Blue Ray Disk- No pixelation even when video was 2 hours and highly compressed (800 MB). I am sure there will definately be none when watching same video but less compression (say 1500 MB)

2. Above seems to hold true even for well ripped video off DVD source. Actually found no pixelation for 1500 MB 2 hour video.

3. SD DTH - Some pixelation for some SD channels. But not on other SD channels. For example Discovery and Nat Geo are clean. So this means problem is with signal or channel itself.

4. HD DTH - Not tried yet but I think result should be clean if #1 or #2 is any indication.

Please note that this may not be generalisable as Samsung's 2012 E4X0 series of Plasmas *are* truly superb for an entry level Flat panel television.

I was talking about pixel size not pixelation of the video source :)

i think they are same right ? being able to notice pixels instead of picture distracts us and its called pixelation ? not sure...

Haha thanks, that was an exceptionally clear and intelligible thread. Most of the stuff I've been reading on the forum gives me a headache. That's a terrific price for a Full HD 3D plasma TV. Congratulations. Now I have to start the hunt to see what's a good price i can get for a 42/43" TV. Ebay has sellers selling the E450 for 31-32k INR, but that would be without company warranty since they're imported (smuggled?). Wondering if it's worth it taking a chance on it. If I can get the E470 for under 40k I probably won't, otherwise I'll toss it around in my head till I go slightly mad. Let's see.

Vinay, That's the thread for ya! :D

Ok, I will be a sport, I paid KWD130 for it. It was on a special discount last month.

Nope its true and I can vouch for it as I did get a call from Samsung.

For those folks who dont want blackest of the blacks..I would prefer going with Samsung. Its a huge profit making behemoth which is not true for Panasonic.

Hi psychotropic , E470 is not available in the market( atleast bangalore) . You can find in junglee.com. But my advice would be to go for E490 for 42k.
