DIY Enclosure/Cabinet for PowerAmp & PreAmp

The fm acediyer has made great transformer covers using aluminium cylinders and cnc machine.

I personally feel that the cabinets by magma around 12000 is quiet costly for the pass 5 when you can get better finished ones from Hong Kong at similar prices with about half the price being the shipping cost.

The fit and finish of my pre and power amps is nothing great to write home about.

I am aware of their products which have great fit and finish. A group buy by all the DIYers would really decrease the shipping costs which otherwise as as high as the product price. Is someone to get a group buy going for the pass 5 from china, I believe the heatsink and cabinet will come to 12k per piece shipped.

Thanks for your initiative, I will join the Group Buy for 2 (all metal) cabinets.

Please share the costing detail and picture of the prototype (if any)

Regards,

Vipin

Let me visit his shop next week to see the work progress, quality and finish. I will try to capture few snaps and post it here.

Right now i can't give you and exact cost estimate, an approximate cost details you can find on my previous posts.

We can initiate the group buy after my visit to that workshop next week. So that i will be in a better position to provide you the cost details and also few photos of the work for your reference. I will be better to proceed after that because all will get an idea about how it going to look like and if any modification needed that can be incorporated.

Also i will be sourcing 5mm or 6mm 2inch x 2inch copper flats to use as heat spreader and the following EMI/RFI filter in the enclosure. If any one is interested pleaese let me know.
Elcom - RFI/EMI Filter, 15 Amp ( EP-15AP )

Thanks,

@ Sann,

My cabs are almost ready. All the sheet metal work and powder coating are over. I will go and collect it this weekend. After that in couple of days i can complete the front panel work in acrylic.

I had made three Preamp (B1) cabs and four PowerAmp cabs. May be i will have one extra preamp cab and if you are interested i can give that to you.

Thanks,
Bibin

I am not a DIYer but my first thought as the previous owner of Class A amps (Plinius), will the acrylic be able to take the heat generated? I think it got so hot that I could cook an egg on it sometimes in double time! :)
The Mimesis face-plate is gorgeous! Very Zen....

Hi Staxxx,

Thanks for the comment. I am also a bit worried about the heat. Looking at the properties of Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/ Plexiglas / acrylic glass it think it can handle the heat generated.

Molecular formula : (C5O2H8)n
Molar mass : varies
Density : 1.18 g/cm3
Melting point : 160 C (320 F)
Refractive index (nD) : 1.4914 at 587.6 nm.

Thanks,
Bibin

what you should worry about is not that the plexi will get to hot or deform
it would need a lot of heat for that happen
it would need to be really close to the heat sink for this to happen

i hope you havent touched the sides of the acrylic to the sink
it will discolor

the reason i dont use it in cabs is beacuse it cant dissipate

even a mild steel metal sheet dissipates the heat and cools itself
acrylic doesnt

thank you for the suggestion and comment Magma.

You are right and i am also aware of the heat Dissipation. I tried to get 6mm aluminium sheet and it is not available locally. Those who have is not ready to give in small quantity. They are asking me to take the entire 6x4 sheet, which is of no use for me.

That's why i decided to go ahead with acrylic and later upgrade it with something from Front Panel Express:

Hi bibin,

Some questions:

Can you post photos of finished cabinets?

Are these for sale now or in near future?

If for sale? What will be the price of cabs for B1?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Murali,

Some of us who are participating in the latest pass B1 group buy are also trying for a group buy for the cabinet. Options for cabinet includes Bibin's cabinet (in fact Bibin had posted on that thread indicating that he is ready to take it up if there are more than 10 members for the group buy).

Please post your interest here if you are interested in a cabinet for B1

Yesterday I went to the sheet metal workshop to see the completed work, the preamp cabs are ready but i am not satisfied with the finish of the powder coating. There were small dots and they had agreed to repeat the powder coating after sand blasting the current layer. So mostly on Monday or Tuesday they will finish their work.

Posting here few pics i took yesterday on my mobile. Sorry for the poor quality of the images.

Thanks,
