Hi,

Can anybody suggest a dvd player from Sony or Philips which would be equivalent in features with the Pioneer DVD player DV 220/420.

To summarize it should have

1) USB port playing .avi files /divx .
2) Should have HDMI. Upscaling similarly to the above mentioned Pioneer brands.
3) Audio files recording capability from disc to USB.

Somehow I felt the Pioneer DV 220 USB capability to be bit clumsy. We have to press the USB button on the remote several times to get it played. Similarly to switch from the USB mode to the CD player mode, again we have hit the buttons a several times randomly. I don't know I may be hitting the buttons wrongly, but I find it funny. The response it too slow.

Also the random play for mp3 audio in the DV 220 and the 420 are non-functional many a times. Out of 10 discs the random function operated only twice. In my older set of Pioneer this was never the problem. All audio discs played randomly without a hitch when the option was selected.

Even the display panel of the DV 220 is a downer. The illuminated LED display sucks. The visibility is very poor. There is no chapter indication as well. When we insert the DVD the display shows... 0.25 and so on. There is no indication of the type of audio i.e. whether Dolby digital or DTS. I am pointing it out because the older dvd players from the Pioneer stable had these displays and functions. They are curtailing the basic functions with the new versions which definitely is not a good idea.

I am thinking of disposing the DV 220 which I own and swtich over to better interfaced and well managed menu driven player preferably SONY/PHILIPS.

Regards,
JAYANT.

If you are particular about a region free dvd player then Philips is a better option. It is much easier to make a Philips DVD player region free than a Sony.

The Phillips DVDP 3568/94 which support Divx, USB and upscaling is priced at 3100/- in Vijay sales Baner, Pune. I am not sure about recording on USB though.
