Agatha Christie's Poirot (TV Series 19892013)

Finished the first three seasons of 'Poirot'. There are three more seasons to go before it gets serious and darker (and goes downhill?).

Since most of the characters on most TV shows these days are either troubled or in trouble, it was a refreshing to see an old, meticulously dressed, well-behaved, absolute gentleman detective, whose only weakness is for praise showered on him. Miss. Lemon in the series is a much better detective than poor sidekick Hastings (Agatha Christie's Watson), who is completely clueless most of the time.

David Suchet is outstanding as Poirot - the amount of preparation he put into the character shows (Suchet's Poirot).

David Suchet is careful in his performance as Poirot. He knows that fans are aware of the oddities and mannerisms that are Poirot's. Suchet says this on his accuracy of Poirot: "I always carry around a list of ninety-three things to remember about him. As mundane as how many lumps of sugar he puts in his tea, and how many in his coffee. Because, you know, people WILL notice these things if you make a mistake. And they do write in about my accuracy...."

Almost all episodes are set in 1930s and there are plenty of old cars, trains, buildings and great settings to go with it. There are lots of "Monsieurs" and "Mademoiselles" and the worst thing you hear most of the time is "ghastly business" to describe a murder. Each episode is stand-alone and you only need to remember the name of the main characters to get back into it. All this makes it a perfect series to watch in the midst of a bunch of movies without losing continuity.

The only problem I have with most episodes is that it is that it is quite easy to figure out who did it (quite early). Is this because we are so exposed to every possible twist available over the years? But it was still fun to watch Poirot exercise his 'little grey cells' to explain how it all fits.

I watched "Quarry" over the last weekend. The first (and only season so far) has 8 episodes. "Quarry" is from the same stable as "Banshee", and some of the typical Banshee-isms get carried over (not really a bad thing). The cast is fresh, and the lead actors (all of them, really) are very good. "Quarry" is a slightly slow burn action drama, but it is a rewarding watch. It is set in the early 70s and it does have a strong 70s movie feel to it in terms of production style too.

One of the most solid side themes running through the series is music, specifically blues, folk, gospel and spiritual. Every character in the series appreciates good music, and there is some really good music playing (usually on a turntable) every few minutes or so. That definitely adds to the atmosphere!

I enjoyed "Quarry" very much, and look forward to the second season (if there will be one). I understand that this series is based on a series of books and so hopefully, it will be continued.

^^ Always share the source where you watched it .. :)
It's available on Hotstar Premium. I have watched 2 episodes & found it intriguing. The lead characters has lots of drak shades & the show has a raw appeal like Banshee.

Z nation - Season 2 Episode 03..

Just started watching the second season of Z nation. In 2015 I watched the 1st season and below is how I reviewed. Wlel the fun continues and does not disappoint in second season as well. EP 02 of SE02 was just super exhilarating ..... Z Nation is just pure adhering fun and sometimes creepy too. Will continue with season 2 and report back.

My original Z Nation Review FEB 2015 ...

Z Nation - Season 1 ... Just finished the last episode, what a fracking fun zombie show this was ....... Please do not compare it with TWD, though I agree comparisons are inevitable but these two shows which are miles/poles apart, the only thing common is zombies and the resemblance ends there.

While TWD is too serious, too slow and too philosophical at times Z Nation is fast, Action and pure old school fun. No soul searching here, just good old classic zombie action . It does not take it too seriously but is serious enough to root for the characters. There is a mission a big picture unlike TWD where you just aimlessly wander, with stick together approach with a no long term agenda. Z Nation we have an objective which acts as the backbone of the season and then each episode has its own mini story in itself which brings nice challenges for our group to overcome.

Performance are sometime a bit stiff but not often but the pace makes it for all. Effects thankfully are spot on and so it the zombie make-up (though yes not as good as TWD)

There is another thing, no character is central, its not a spoiler but just when you will start thinking this character is going to the protagonist of the TV series think again. Anyone can die, I liked this, If you are a Zombie genre fan like I am this will be a joy ride ..... dont miss ...... 6.8/10

The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story .... This show is "Top Quality" simply putting it, did a binge watch in two days, 10 episodes.. and I was just awe struck by what I saw. First I knew little about O J Simpson ordeal, except for the fact that he was charged for double homicide, but was he acquitted or was he incarcerated??? that however I did not know, and I did not google it as well before starting this series and boy or boy I am glad I did not. Made the entire journey just so interesting and edge of the seat material.
This TV series is NOT to be missed any means. It powerfull ,tells a true story in and out of how the judicial system. media, racism can play a major role in a verdict. Even if you know the verdict, even then this is not to be missed coz there are layers n layes of investigation and intrigue that is there in the so called trial of the decade.

Coming to performances, every character just nailed the performance, Cuba Gooding Jr. as O.J, and Courtney B. Vance as his procecuter Johnnie Cochran, John Travolta as Robert Shapiro, David Schwimmer (friends fame)as OJ's best friend Robert Kardashian and the opposition Sterling K. Brown Christopher Darden and awesome Sarah Paulson Marcia Clark ...all just nailed the character ............. guys this is a Must watch TV series and specially for court room drama lovers ....... 7.8/10 for this one.

Goliath - Season 1 - EP 02 .... well Just posting a quick review of this new series I started on APV, and just finished 2nd episode and I am compelled to write few lines that this has blown my socks off, with the level of quality, mystery and shock in just 2 episodes. This is a court room drama (or will be soon), and followed a cliched line of an old worn out lawyer who was once kick butt, and now is left out and forgotten, comes back with a case to redeem himself. As I said the plot seems cliched, but in just two episodes I am hooked like a virus, the entire premise oozes with quality, tension, intrigue and mystery. .... seriously looking forward to more of it .... will update soon

Just finished watching GOLIATH, Season 1 on Amazon Prime. I was going through the list of winners from the Golden Globes Awards 2017 & was surprised to see this show starring the extremely talented Billy Bob Thornton of Fargo fame winning the Award for best Actor. The show also has some big names including William Hurt.

The story surrounds around this talented lawyer played by Billy who has passed his prime but still has a lot of steam left in him. He enters into a slugfest with his ex partner played by William Hurt over a supposedly suicide case of a person working in a Defence equipment company. Hurt plays a very dark role & portrays the character brilliantly.

The show involves a fair bit of court room drama & hilarious theatrics from Billy.

It's just a 8 season mini series by Amazon & a great watch, though personally i would have loved a more punchy finale.

8/10.

Goliath - Season 1 ... AMAZING, just loved the show, would be very high in my rating schema, however I still have few apprehensions, and few things that I did not like, or shall I say could not understand why writers would do so (I can share if someone is interested and upto it for a debate ), but that aspect made me pull out few points from the over all score. But all said and done, this does not take away from the fact that it still remains one hell of a show, the quality of the writing most of the time is excellent, and the dialogues, performances, characters are blind spot on. Infact I would say the way it's shot and paced, the amount of detective work involved, the score and the atmosphere the show maintains, makes it feel much more like classy film noir than any legal drama.

Coming to ending, yes I have read reviews that say it was a lukewarm ending, I would say it was not over-dramatized, in fact it as not dramatized at all and that for me actually worked in favor of the show and the atmosphere in was shot in. However yes I would agree that the amount of final evidence and argument I was expecting the protagonist team will put up in the last two episodes was not as much as I would have expected; for it to get the kind of verdict it got ....... you will know what I mean when you will see the show ....... this could have been 8/10 but I would cut 2 points for what I said in the first para, and settle with 7.8/10 , which mind you in it self is a pretty high score in my rating schema .......:)

What a recommendation... a superb show. I just watched a couple of episodes and I must say this is going to stay.

Thanks a lot for this and keep them coming :):)

I've been watching "Taboo" over the last few days (I really wanted to binge, but these days, it's come down to Taboo or sleep).

I love it! Tom Hardy is a great actor, and he carries the entire series on his shoulders. He/His character is present, physically or in reference, in nearly every scene, and boy, he is truly a beast in this one. He's sort of channeling the deep-down-good-guy part of Bane (and some of the bad guy part) in this character. The rawness and intensity of the man he plays are both breathtaking, and unsettling. He's like a steamroller flattening a path to his goal, obliterating all obstacles along the way. I have two more episodes to go, and I can't wait to get down to watching them.

I normally hate everything with England in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The costumes, the manner, the prudishness, they all out me off. But this series shows a different side of things: The underbelly is laid bare, and it seems accurate to everything I've read about England in that time. And watching it on screen is refreshing (which might be an oxymoron, considering what we actually see is not pretty).

The atmosphere is dark and brooding throughout. The dialogues and the inflections of language are truly a pleasure to listen to, and the supporting cast do an outstanding job in bringing a lot of colour to their characters.

I'd highly recommend watching the series.

How many of you guys watch your TV shows on a bigger screen, probably 50 inches or more? How's the experience? Currently i watch most of the shows on my 1080p Toshiba chromebook, but planning to buy a big screen as many streaming options are now available in India. Does a bigger screen gives you more immersive experience.? also i enjoy most of the shows with headphones on as the sound detailing is much better that way.
