Oh ya, the stand height and my seating position were also adjusted and that made a difference as well. Forgot about that! Let me also add that auditioning this stuff at ARN was a pleasure in itself. Sridhar and Ali were both very helpful and friendly. They even served me some fantastic tea (was it a Kahwa?).

The gloss finish costs a bit more, it's in the 30k range, so I had to opt for the darker of the wood finishes. It is a dark red wood finish. Looks very good. The build quality of the speakers seems to be very good. Heavy and inert. Of course not as sexy as the Wharfedale 10.1, but in terms of sound the Wharfedale can't come close.

I do wish more dealers around the country (specifically Chennai!) took up Usher dealerships though. The speakers seem to be criminally good value, and to have to travel to Bangalore to audition them is not something everyone will be able to do.

@Asit - not yet hooked up. Just reached back this morning by bus. Also I don't have speaker wire. Need to buy that.

@Rem - The CDP was the Usher , the amp was the NAD C372. Couldn't carry mine because I was travelling by bus. But the NADs I've heard have very similar sound signatures across the line, and this was the best approximation I could manage. Will post reports on how it sounds with my Marantz CD63SE and NAD C320BEE as soon as I hook them up.

And apologies for not giving you a buzz, it was a pretty hectic trip. Was not able to pick up the interconnects from SoundsGreat either.

Happy that you got the speakers Pscyho I knew it would hve been a hectic trip getting to one place in time itself is a big deal in Blr :D

My frnd might also go for the same speakers coz it has been the best we hve heard till now in tht budget.

Sure :) , please have your local dealers call us, we will be happy to set this up

thanks!

hey Rem,

What else have you compared this to? You mentioned the Tannoy, anything else? Just out of curiosity.

hey,

don't have space for stands, therefore i am placing them on my wooden cabinet with granite slabs and possibly a thick book each (think telephone directory) under the speakers.

And yeah, why don't you speak to one of the Delhi dealers and tell them to take up Usher dealership!! Next time I meet Raghu or someone in Chennai, I am definitely going to plug this idea!

:clapping: :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

what stands would you be using?

I think I will have to travel to blore soon to see sridhar and hear ushers :)

Re: And the winner by a landslide:

Oh ya, afterwards I listened to the BE-718 and the Emerald Physics CS2.3. thevortex, i am sorry i couldn't audition the other Usher, because I was already intruding into someone else's audition appointment. The Be-718 sounded like a BIG brother of the S520. Of course, it costs some 5 times more, and it sounded at least twice as good :) the LFE was stunning, and the mids were super liquid, as were the highs.

And of course the Emerald Physics. I've heard people describe speakers by saying that "it felt like the performers were there in the room with you." I've never actually felt that before. I felt it with these. Goosebump level performance. They sounded like no speaker I've heard before. Cranked up to really really loud levels, it sounded shockingly listenable. The bass had a different quality to it compared to the box speakers I've heard. I am not 100% sure I like it this way, but ya, it's a quibble. Stunning speakers! maybe some day when I have the dough to start a thread saying "favourite speakers around Rs. 2 lakhs" I'll be seriously considering these :)

A quick correction - you heard the CS3 - the starting line of the EPs. The CS2.3s were not on display that day. As good as the CS3s sound, the CS2.3s are in a completely different league.

thanks

Try the granite slabs on the top of the speakers sandwiched by some cloth (to prevent scratches). You might even want to try some way to couple/isolate them to the cabinet - spikes is one idea..

cheers

hey Rem,

What else have you compared this to? You mentioned the Tannoy, anything else? Just out of curiosity.

Tannoy F1, wharfedale 10.1, Mordaunt Short Avant

Agreed that these are all cheaper speakers but S520 was way above all these.

Again I got to stress that the partnering amp and source was really poor for the Tannoys & Wharfedale.

In fact it came very close or equalled the B&W 685's(which was around 40k) on all fronts.

Tannoy F1 with Pioneer 310 DVDp, Marantz PM 4001 amp
Wharfedale 10.1 with Marantz CDP dont remember the model no with Yamaha amp
Avant with CA 540C&540A, CA 640A&640C

B&W 685 with Oppo 980 & Nuforce amp(arnd a lakh)
Usher S520 with Usher CDP & Leben CS600 amp (worth a few lakhs I guess) :D

So I do believe the partnering equipments also played a role in my judgement but never got time to go and have a second listen to the Tannoy or Usher with other amps.

I've heard reliable accounts (both the Hi Fi World comparison tests) and someone's personal view that the S520 is superior to the B&W 685 in everything but bass. Of course it's not that shocking if you consider the fact that the S520 is a 320 GBP speaker and the B&W is a 380 GBP speaker, so their prices in India are perhaps not a true reflection of their market position.

Hi Psycho,
Congrats on your purchase. I have heard a lot of good things about all Usher speakers so i can say i was expecting somewhat that you will like them a lot when you listen to them or atleast you would have a tough time deciding against them
Also i read in some review that 520's sound improved a lot without grills. Did you audition them without grills? I know its not easy for everyone to keep the speakers without grills with kids.
Enjoy your setup and looking forward to reading a detailed review by you on your setup.

Congratulations Psychotropic! I am glad you are getting speakers that absolutely wow'ed you.

I wish Usher was taken up by any of the local dealers here in Chennai. Ah well, lets see.

Psycho, congrats on your purchase.:clapping:Great review... Enjoy many long hours of great music with your system.Looking forward to more feedback on how it sounds with your own gear and also about the cabling other things .
