Favourite speakers under INR 20k

hey gobble, i have a feeling that might be an error, because the 10.2 for 14k i think will be very difficult, the 9.2 till very recently has been going for 14k, and the 10 series models are brand new.

Anyways, like I said, I really liked the Wharfedale 10.1 and quite frankly it's No. 2 among all the speakers I've auditioned so far, as far as my personal preference is concerned. Others may be more accomplished and stuff like that, but these babies were pure fun!

Possible, because I too asked the poster where he got it from, there was no response. Yeah for the price they are sheer fun!

Cheers

Did you manage to get tight bass from the 10.1? I too liked the 10.1; but I am still trying to figure out how to make the 10.1's bass tight, before I sell my 9.1. ;)

Re: Wanted: Tight bass on 10.1

nope, as i said in the review, the bass was not very tight, but the speakers were about 8" from the wall. I am guessing that if you can put them at least a couple of feet from the wall, you should get tighter bass, or maybe with some foam plugs. Otherwise the sound was very enjoyable, and they are good 'rock' speakers. Strangely, the more I think about them, the more they grow in my esteem :)

And transparency?? More resolving than the Bronze BR2?

The treble is fine on the 10.1, but the over-sized bass tilts everything down a bit.

The Usher S520 will not give you the same bass performance of the BR2, the latter will be more. At this price especially, all these components have to make pretty big compromises. The S520 gives you better resolution and transparency in the mids and highs than the BR2 and goes compromise on the bass performance.
The bass module when it comes out is meant to offset this compromise.

cheers

Hey Sridhar,

Thanks for that. Actually my room is a 10' by 10' untreated room and i may not need the LFE of the BR2. In my room even the Audioengine 2s give me a reasonable amount of bass. I'm looking forward to auditioning it at ARN, i am trying to come some time this week to Bangalore.

I am a "orchestral classical" guy and that genre needs everything!

Tonal authority, especially in the midrange, resolution to separate out the layers of an orchestra, super tight bass for those timpani rolls and highs for sparkling violins!

A speaker needs to speak the truth to do classical well!

And I am still searching for the absolute truth!

The Diamond 9.1 does very well, given its price, but as I said before, my K701s resolve more detail!

However, the K701 is not absolutely correct, tonally.... I am looking for the holy grail in speakers/headphones. Seems that the Sennheiser HD800 is on my list of wanted! :D But the price!

And the Usher BE-718... howz that with classical?

Re: Wanted: Tight bass on 10.1

not in my view. I thought the BR2s were more resolving especially in the high frequencies. While I couldn't make out a marked difference in their ability to resolve the sounds in the mid-frequencies, somehow I felt the mids on the Wharfedale were slightly more enjoyable than those on the BR2.

Yes... the midrange on the Diamond 9.1 and 10.1 is really, really good!

It is tonally accurate and instrument timbre is spot on! I love the Wharfedale mids... Fleshed out and involving! :ohyeah:

If I can get the 10.1 to be as tight in the bass as the 9.1, I will buy it!

I dont think the 10.1 is enough of an upgrade over the 9.1 to justify selling one to get the other. It may be better to save up some more and step up a notch or two to better quality bookshelves

Re: Wanted: Tight bass on 10.1

yeah, this does seem to make sense. If you already have the 9.1 it might be better to look at a higher category to upgrade to. I am curious as to why no one talks about the higher ranges of the Wharfedales like the Evo series, has anyone heard them?

Thanks for taking the time to write all this up, Psychotropic. Bound to be useful. If you are looking at the Monitor Audio BR2 why not also look at the PSB Image B25. That is also priced at 25K last I checked. I have not heard a better rock music speaker at that price.

The Image B15's maybe a little bit of a compromise but then no harm in seeing if you can listen to them as well before biting the speaker, erm, bullet:)

Yes, I have heard the Evos once. At Grand Cinema. I concur with your estimation that they are warm and good people to deal with. That bonhomie is something you never get at Audio People which is sad. Plus the Energy speakers that they have are pretty old stock.

The Evos were wonderful. Absolutely warm speakers with huge sound and presence. They were floorstanders. I forgot the model number, but it was about the size of the Diamond 9.6. But then they were priced pretty high - in the 70s (thousands) if I remember right. Plus the Evos, I am given to understand, are going to discontinued if they have not already been.

I felt that Wharf 9.2 and Wharf 9.1 had 600-1200 Hz octave (midrange) a little lower than desirable. This is exactly the same octave that causes honky-ness if it gets more than normal.

Of course I could make this out only when Quads were playing side by side.

Then, that's the Wharfedale's credit, right? :clapping:

The Wharfie 9.1s also integrate the upper mids with the treble perfectly, a rare thing at their price point.

I wonder if anybody else other than me has felt that the Wharfedale Diamonds add an extra layer of sweetness to female vocals - especially the husky, softly sung ones.

For example - 'Spanish Harlem' by Rebecca Widgeon.

Hi Tropic and others,I propose to get the speakers for my 13'x9' room(untreated). Will 9.2/10.1 be overpowering for the room and will i be better off settling for 9.1?

Hi CoolToad

It will suffice depending on your amp. 9.2 needs atleast 1 feet from the back of the speakers to the rear wall and 1 feet from the side wall.

Cheers

I just realised I forgot to mention one possibly important point. WHen I auditioned the BR2, I was using a Marantz SA7001 CD player, whereas when I auditioned the Wharfedale 10.1, I was using a Marantz CD5001 CD player. I am wondering aloud if this could have played some small role in my preference for the BR2, because one of the areas i preferred the BR2 was in the level of detail.
