Good news for vinyl Lovers

Indian pressing's have been notoriously horrendous, especially pressings from the 60s - 90s. but thankfully things are starting to change now. This renaissance is very encouraging and I hope that as more and more ppl start turning to vinyl, Indian pressing standards improve tooo :)

Agree totally on the horrendous quality of most Indian pressings, but I don't see that changing. Actually, I don't see Indian pressings coming back at all, the demand just won't be high enough. These import pressings at 700-odd is where the market is likely to stay. And that's not a bad thing, really.

I purchased the DDLJ LP from Galleria market in Gurgaon yesterday evening! :) The store also had the other two Saragama releases with them.

Is it just me or others also think that the audio quality could have been better?

I compared the sound from the DDLJ LP to the Sony releases that I have (RDB and Lagaan). The sound was much more open and had depth in those recordings, something that is missing(?) in this one.
I was telling myself that DDLJ was an older recording (1995) than the other two, but that should not be reason to have a poor master, right?
Thoughts on the comparison, anyone?

To me also Lagaan sonded better than DDLJ. In fact DDLJ, 1942 ALS, DTPH- all 3 I found to be ok not great.

Thanks

Hi Pratim,

Glad to know that you have joined the Vinyl bandwagon.

Could not resist myself. But in LP , I am more interested in old recordings ( used or new re-release) than the new one. Collected one new "James Taylor " re release - enjoying very much.

Thanks
Pratim

Today i bought DDLJ and Dil To Pagal Hai from Supreme music center with 10% discount. Dil To Paagal Hai is better then previous released one(1995).
Badluk i did't find 1942 A Love Story in Hyderabad.

I have the old recording. (80's)..in very good condition of following records...and guess what the MRP on these range from Rs. 42 to Rs. 50. :)

Silsila --> MRP Rs.799
Kabhi Kabhie --> MRP Rs.799
Pakeezah --> MRP Rs.799
Mughal-E-Azam --> MRP Rs.799

I would love to compare the record quality of Old pressings Vs. the New pressings. There would be obvious noise due to dust and wear and tear...but other than that my belief is that old records would be of better quality.

Any comments /experince ?

same here, jimmy...
i too have all the titles in IMMACULATE condition.....

as far as the sound quality goes, all i know is,

OLD VINYLS - recorded directly from the original analog reel-to-reel masters.

NEW REISSUES - most probably recorded from original analog masters, BUT a doubt creeps in. those dick-heads at SA RE GA MA think they are doing the humanity a huge favour by ENHANCING the original recording...

only solution would be to check-out a couple of titles and confirm if there's any diff ( a digital enhancement)....

as u rightly point out, there is going to be a few clicks-and-pops with our old copies.... but an ANALOGOHOLIC like me does'nt even notice them anymore.....

Well, my export opinion on the above:
Many old lps that we have arent necessarily the first releases but many times, reissues.
Similarly, todays reissues may have quality, good or bad, which depends on the preservation of master tapes. If this master of a perticular title is well preserved, theres no reason the reissue will be worse than older reissues.
That said, even the best of todays releases may not better the old cut, they can at best hope to equal it.
Even the digital enhancements would aim to reduce imperfections that have crept into the masters in these dormant years. Such enhancements too would equal the old issues ONLY in a perfect world.
And heres the catch- if a previous reissue wasn t carefully set up on reel while cutting reissue so that the resultant quality was bad on previous lp, todays lp may sound better. But thats remote possibility.
Que: which indian lps post 1970 sound bad due to recording/cutting issues?

Srinivas.

Saregama can relaunch LP records of hits of yesteryears by manufacturing them as in the past.I am sure there will be a niche market for this.

Sincerely,

IIRC, SILSILA 's original one was a double-LP, right?

Is the new one going to be the same, or is HMV going to be scissor happy and edit out songs/interludes etc, which they used to do in some 'combination' cassettes ;-)
