Good Old TVs

We owned an B&W BPL TV in 1986. Got it upgraded to BPL TV color in early 90's. Then to Sony Wega in late 90's. Now I own a Samsung 40' LCD Series 5.

Used to have an UPTRON color Tv, bought in 1987.. Still have good memories watching DD2 and the local doordarshan broadcast.. Then upgraded to a Philips 29 inch color tv later on.. Now with the Panasonic Plasma

During Asiad 1982 games, colour tv transmission had just commenced. We were into retail of Tv and manufacturing of TV booster under the name NAKUDA. The govenrnment had imported colour TV kits in bulk from Samsing and GoldStar (now LG) korea. Only the wooden cabinet was made in India. Rest full kit was from korea. Korea as a manufacturing country was not so popular so were scarry to sell the same to known customers. But all tv's sold on the first day of asiad opening and they lasted the most (more than the known japanese brands) So till date the koreans are leading due to their quality and durability.

Koreans make better quality electronics than Japanese.....

So long products are not Made in China...most Japan made products are assets to own.....I remember my Sony Trinitron TV lasting for approx 20 years before I got bored with it and gave it to my servant before buying a Sony Bravia......

Professional audio/ Video and photographic equipments that are made in Japan are still known for their high quality where hardly any Koreans dominate....but yes they have become very expensive......

Samsung / LG is like new born child in the field of electronics....they are still learning..... maybe copying......

Oh.. memories.. we had a Telerad back at home in Kurukshetra :-) I'm currently looking for an old TV which came with 'legs' and shutters.. rememeber those?

ANy ideas where can i find those now? anyone selling? :-)

Anybody remembers or had Kinetik Merlin?
Was it a combo of Tv + Hifi + PC or something else?

It was pretty revoltionalry idead that time which didn't get going.

Yes, I remember it. It costed a bomb though. After pleading dad to buy it several times, he smartly convinced me that it has "technical" issues and goes kaput due to overheating in the Indian weather conditions! LOL

EC TV was manufactured by govt. And it started some state govt. owned electronic companies with their own TV brands:

Keltron: Kerala
Meltron: Mah
Uptron: UP

EC TV was known for quality.

We had a Sonodyne black and white, that lasted for 16 years, with wooden shutters.
I remember ours was one of the few TVs in the area, and people flocking to our place to watch Bengali movies on Sunday evenings, suffering from nostalgia now, sweet suffering though. :)

We bought a black and white Bush TV way back in 1981 when I was 6 year old,in Bangalore. I remember it was put to display to the viewers on the road. We paid the money and the showroom guy packed the same display piece.
We never worried that it was a display piece. It served us for around 20 years.

We also owned a Bush CTV, I guess it was 1984/85 when we bought it. I was still in school and we were the second home in the whole society to own a CTV. It had just eight channel buttons on the right side with a tweeter and a mid range speaker. It lasted 18 years before the tuner stated giving problems. Finally got it exchanged for a Sammy 29" CRT back then. But the colours were really great, my mom still complains that all these new LCDs dont match up to the old TV.

We owned a OSCAR 14" B&W TV in 80's. I remember we were making sitting arrangements for people on Sundays (to watch DD serials/movies with neighbors) :)
Also remember when we hear that there is a movie event on VCR tonight somewhere in our area, this news was spreading like wildfire (VCR/CTV on rent with 3-4 movies), watching movies whole night was really awesome. :yahoo: :D
Then next day telling and sharing movie story with friends with full sound effects (Tan Tana, Dhishoom) :ohyeah:

Then upgraded to CROWN Color TV in mid 90's. After that Samsung 29". Now I own a Samsung 42'' Plasma and 32" LCD Series 5.

1. In 1981, dad purchased a B/W Weston wooden closable cabinet TV. I was not born at that time.

2. In 1983, when I saw the world, It was a color Dyanora TV with 12 channels. What I remember clearly is the time when all 'mohalla' people would gather on sundays to watch Rangoli & Ramayan in our house. It mattered a little if we knew them or even if they knew us!
The TV Stayed with us for 13 years.

3. IN 1995, we got a Sony KV-2167MT- (Real Sony- Made in Tokyo!), a multi-system stereo television, 80 channels with Trinitron picture tube. Great picture quality. We sold the aging Dyanora for about Rs. 900/- to the same dealer. Its picture tube almost had become lifeless.

4.In 2000, Dad added a 14 inch Sansui to my room. Very good picture quality.

5. In 2009, when finally I had some money to buy a TV, I bought a Sony 32 BX320 LCD.

I still have the last 3 TVs listed here and they all run flawlessly. I am planning to revive my old Onida VCR to couple it with the Sony CRT, which I value the most among all others listed.

Thanks,
Saket

Our first TV was a B & W Sonodyne (yeah, they were into TV also then). Then I bought the beautiful Nelco Blue Diamond. Right now we have the monsterous (46 kg) Sony Vega 29'' Trinitron. In a few days hopefully, I'll have another 40" LED. But the thrill & romance of watching `Rangoli' & `Hum Log' on a B & W TV was something we'll never feel again !

Absolutely. The coming generation like our children will never experience the thrill of many such things that we have experienced like

1. Graduating from a b&w TV to a color tv and watching rangoli, ramayan, mahabharat, surbhi, etc on DD,

2. The thrill of a family buying a second hand fiat or ambassador and the next door uncle driving it, being the only person knowing to drive in the neighborhood! I can swear by the fact that I have enjoyed by childhood more in an old FIAT rather than a brand new Zen that we bought later!

3. The fun of travelling in a sleeper class of a train while going to your 'nani's place (grandmother).

4. Listening to old tapes in old tape-recorders to 'find' what was on them.

5. The happiness of buying a new Bollywood movie audio cassette.

6. Travelling on your only vehicle, which was a bajaj/Vijay/ Allwyn scooter standing in front with your dad riding it!

There are many other things that will make us nostalgic, but the newer generation will never understand! Generation Gap??

I think, the generation gap in this era will be the biggest!

So, not just 'Good old TVs', but also, good old days!

Regards,
Saket
