Great musicians of the 20th century

the reference to Prof Longhair and also Dr. John, Washboard Sam, Big Bill Broonzy etc come through canonical blues literature...Gov't Mule, for an itinerant deadhead is a logical progression ...
and of course god bless the torrents....

It's a pity, how much good music has disappeared, forgotten forever, from the studio catalogues. The mainstream studio's are fixated with the same stupid 50 solo's and bands.Try to find even Phil Ochs,Woody Guthrie,Paul Robeson,Robert Johnson,Sly And The Family Stone and you come up with zilch.

(Love the visual imagery and outdoor feel of this 'lesser' known track.'Country music' like no Country singer/songwriter could ever dream of creating)
Out on the trans-Canada highway
There was a girl
hitchhiking with her dog
Fireflies buzzin' round her head
Like candles in the fog.

He was three miles down the road
Tryin' to stay up,
but he knew that he couldn't
She was looking
for a ride through the night
But out there, who wouldn't.

They were bound for glory
Bound for living on the edge
They were bound for each other
Like two comets heading for a bed.

She had a new way of living
New way of looking at life
He had an
'84 International and two kids
He left back home with his wife.

He was tired of
writin' letters to himself
And living in the dark
She was open to suggestions
And some say
she had a broken heart.

He had everything he wanted
'Til it all
turned out to be a job
One fallen asleep trucker
And a girl
hitchhiking with her dog.

They were bound for glory
Bound for living on the edge
They were bound for each other
Like two comets heading for a bed.

She had a new way of living
New way of looking at life
He had an
'84 International and two kids
He left back home with his wife.

Out on the trans-Canada highway
The sun came climbing up the cab
By the time it hit the window
they were wakin' up
From what little sleep they had.

When that heat hit the blankets
They were looking
for love at second sight
Just starin' in each others' eyes
Findin' it in the mornin' light.

They were bound for glory
Bound for living on the edge
They were bound for each other
Like two blankets layin' on a bed.

She had a new way of living
New way of looking at life
He had an
'84 International and two kids
He left back home with his wife.

Ajay, if you like Neil Young, ( i love him!) you should check out his latest album - Le Noise....

It was released about a month or two ago and I got meself the album on LP....

It is an album that taps into the stream of consciousness.... its just Neil and his guitars.... raw and unadultrated... no drums.... no keyboards.... no nothing!

It is sheer brilliance! This album is one of Neil's best works.... The video below is the entire DVD of Le Noise. Enjoy!

Nice Video Manav!
Watching it now, with my Cyrus amp at 1'0'Clock le noise levels!Neil seems to be in a real kick-ass mode.:)

@Moktan
Where do you dig up and obtain music like Govt Mule and Prof Longhair?:)

Professor Longhair by the way is the fountainhead from which flowed lesser but definitely far more popular acts like Elvis Priestley...really there is no fussin with the Fess...
also Neil Young rocks....Motorcycle Mama a mean, grungy duet with i forget whom was staple listening during my Rust Never Sleep days....in fact there was another of his duets with the now long forgotten Linda Rondsdalt (though a few years back i bought an Emmylou Harris (an excellent All I Intended to Be CD) called , was it Four Winds??..anyway those were the days..and by the way did you ever have pretensions of singing American Dream by The Dirt Band??? ..and what about acts like Smokie, Lobo, The Steve Miller band (was intrigued to learn that Miles Davis and some of his cohorts gave a sample of the sound to come while opening for them), Kansas, America.. etc....of course we all went through those stages..Rhinestone Cowboy, Handyman, Dust in the wind, Amanda, Final countdown (does anyone remember Europe ..god there are so many of them.. ...and Dr. Hook..anyone remember Dr Hook??? (when you are in love with a woman..)

Does anybody remember a 70's magazine from Calcutta called JS?
Desmond Doig?Jug Suraiya?CY Gopinath?Bacchi Karkaria?Dubby Bhagat?Ring any bells?
JS was the only magazine that I have ever been a cult follower off.Every Saturday evening I would walk 20 minutes from my house in Simla to pick up the new issue.Nirvana if I got it.Instant depression if it had not arrived.Suicidal depression when it became a fortnightly, and a minor death when I clutched the last issue in my hand, and read the fateful words, that they were shutting shop.
It was in the 'blue' pages of JS,that I first read the names-Cliff Richard,Neil Diamond,Glen Campbell,Carpenters,Queen,Beatles,Bob Dylan.......Got me out of Binaca Geet Mala and into western music.First favourites Devil Woman,Song Sung Blue,Yesterday Once More,Dancing Queen,Papa,Rhinestone Cowboy,Daddy Cool....
For many, many years I kept my 100+ issues of JS like a treasure, until one stupid day:o I sold them all to a raddhiwalla for cigarette money. Many years later, hurting with nostalgia for 'those were the days of JS',I started hunting around in old book shops for copies of my teenage love, but found none.A couple of years ago,I spent a couple of hours hunting around the world wide web,but JS like my youth was gone forever...
First Loves:):):):):)
Papa still brings a tear to my eyes,Devil Woman,Song Sung Blue,Dancing Queen a smile and Yesterday Once More aching nostalgia.I can almost touch the frozen, wintry air of the Simla of my teens....

ok i have to put out a caveat on this one..prof longhair inspired Priestley's music not his eyebrows..

most elvis impersonators put too much stock on his physical (read hirsute)attributes..baxtor seems to be no different...
Elvis on the other hand was inspired by Longhair's music not his hair (which he didn't have much anyway..)

I recently picked up a Linda Ronstadt LP but it skips and not able to play. Her "It's So Easy To Fall In Love", "Blue Bayou", etc were gems. BTW, she was married at some point to George Lucas.

JS was definitely before my time, but I have read Jug Suraiya and Bachi Karkaria reminisce longingly about their JS day. These are two columnists I follow. Very brainy, both of them. Of course Jug Suraiya can verge on the crazy, but Bachi Karkaria's Erratica in ToI is always a great read. My mag was "Sun". Similar type of content, I guess.

American Dream - wow, you revive great memories!

Kansas - great progrock band. Especially their liberal use of the violin. Very unusual in a rock band. I guess the best example of their use of the violin is "Dust In The Wind". Very melancholic, very un-rock-like, yet featured in most Rock Ballad albums. BTW, Steve Morse (currently lead guitarist of Deep Purple) was once part of Kansas.

Boston: very powerful guitar riffs. Some genuinely nice ballads. Amanda, IMHO, was one of their lesser numbers, but a crowd pleaser, nonetheless.

Europe: used to really like them, until a friend who was not too clued in to their brand of rock, pointed out that all their tunes sounded so mushy and similar. The "macho" guy in me somehow agreed:) I recently picked up an LP but it doesn't sound great. But all the same, Mic Michaeli, their guitarist, continues to be one of my all-time favs.

Any one listens to TNT, that Norwegian rock band?

'Sun' came out after JS closed down.I followed it for a few months, but for me it did not have even a little bit of the JS magic. No magazine ever had again.
Incidentally the full form of JS was Junior Statesman, but everyone called it JS:)
If you have watched Citizen Kane you would know what I mean:
JS is my 'Rosebud' memory.Possibly Jug and Bachi's too!

Ajay,

Some of the best times of my early teens were spent in my Uncle's place at Bangalore, one of the many reasons being that he had a huge collection of LP's which included most of the singers you have posted. Paul Anka's 'Papa' and 'Having my Baby' (although I was too young to be happily singing about someone having my baby, hehe) were two of the oft listened songs.

Guitar Man !!! Don't know how long back I heard that one. Still makes me smile :)

Regards,

Sunil
