Great Tasting Vinyl

Home now!
Just put on 'grasshopper'. Sounds way better than the cd! Up next will be 'shades' and lastly troubador.

Btw, any JJ Cale fans out here? Raise you left hand type yes with the right- right now!

Yup yup! Shades and I have another album... Just can't get the name right now... Don't think I have any on vinyl though... Enjoy!

Hi Ajay!

yeah JJ is smooth as silk... and his guitar work is subtle yet intricate....

its funny how he uses subtle, sweet tones on Cocaine to paint a certain picture, while his friend and fellow guitar master - Eric C paints an entirely different picture with his power chords laden guitar work on his interpretation...

Btw, I am happy that you seeing value in going for the Maggie 1.7, like I said on the phone a few weeks back, it is one heck of speaker with the Bryston! And especially for the kind of music that you listen to!

anyhoo!

Just finished listening to Blind faith, now listening to Graham Nash/David Crosby.... also cued and ready is George Harrison's - Living in the material world!

Nicely mastered stuff!

Imagine this stuff from the 60s and 70s beats the indian vinyl mastering of today... Quite frankly most of the stuff being released today by the Indian record companies is pure Junk...

Having said that, I have just pre-ordered a Kailash Kher Vinyl that is being offered by flipkart... I do hope that it is not a piece of crap as Kailash is musician that really is talented.... and i would love to have him on vinyl as long as the mastering is not a joke!

btw, guys! have you tried flipkart? i did, the prices are VERY good and the service is even better! they say 3 business days, whereas i got my stuff within 24 hours!

I have bought a few cds and books from Flipkart. Used the pay on delivery option :) Incredible service. And very good prices. Best option for buying books. Unfortunately their collection of music is very limited although their rock music section had some good cds.

I had bought anthologies of John Mayall and The Who. Plus Grateful Dead's Live Dead. My second run with Live/Dead left me even more impressed than my first one a couple of decades ago. Unquestionably the greatest live rock album of them all. Some of the other contenders in my book would be Frampton Comes Alive, Four Way Street and the Cream and Blind Faith concerts. Phil Ochs Live is in a different league. I don't compare him with any other rock musician.

For the moment I am seeing a lot of value in the Vienna Acoustics! Somehow I don't see myself parting with them, or even relegating them from their prime time spot. But if I find a good pair of Thiel 3.6 at a good price, i will buy them immediately :)

@Ajay: knowing you, i know that the Vienna's will go as soon as something clicks in your mind!

in my own case, i'd been a little unhappy about the wife not liking the way the B&W's look.... but last evening things just clicked in place for her too...
she actually stopped being upset about the said speakers and sat down with me to play scrabble in our lil listening room, without making faces at the speaker... after about 5 hours of play... she tells me that these speakers are actually darned good!

she says, "i don't know about your audiophile language, but i feel that on good recordings the entire band is with us here in the room! and these speakers are actually so big and cuddly!"

i guess nothing like a set of Beatles vinyl's and a bunch of Joan Baez Lp's to set things in perspective!

This morning, I pulled out a CD from my boy's "little einstien" box... it has a cd called "my first Classical Collection". Good stuff! I will start building a western classical collection on vinyl around it for him... will need your help on this in time, ajay!

Listening to the ever yummy CSNY - 4 way street!

Once u hear it on a good vinyl set up, youkd ask, "why release it on CD?"

This set is worth it!

Last night was awesome....

as I spun a record that I found after a great amount of patient searching - Arlo.

Arlo is a live album recorded by Arlo Guthrie. Arlo was protest singer who is now a legend. Arlo followed in the footsteps of his legendary father who was a HUGE protest singer in his own right - Woodie Guthrie....

The recording, even though from the 60s (1968 to be precise) is superb dynamically... Now most live albums are pretty badly mastered, even in the modern day.... but this is breathtaking...

The songs too are ironic, witty and intelligent! There are many interactive dialogues by the performer in this and one in particular is hilarious - it is about the FBI

Here is a song from the album:

The evening ended with Frank Sinatra - Swings

Oh my my.... how i still love his "witchcraft"

Here is a taste of it:

Hi Manav,

The beauty of the song is the tabla work of Ed Shaughnessy
Hall of Fame Ed Shaughnessy

An unusual facet of the Shaughnessy versatility is his mastery of the Indian Rhythmic System and the Tabla, which he studied with the great Alla Rakha.

Truly one of the great Percussionist's of all time.

Cheers

Currently listening to 'Tchaikovsky - Symphony No. 3 In D Major (Polish)'. Conducted by the Vienna State Opera Orchestra, and conducted by Hans Swarowsky. The label is URANIA.

Its quite beautiful! I think I am acquiring a taste for Western Classical!
