Hathway goes HD in Bangalore??

First make sure that you have selected dolby in HD STB settings. Menu-->Settings-->User set up -->audio-->Select dolby

You can clearly differentiate dolby audio because the volume of dolby channels like Movies now, M Tunes and Colors are on the higher side compared to other HD channels when you are listening on home theater.

Hi all,

I am moving from Reliance DTH (SD) to Hathway HD. In my area (Old Madras Road-Kaggadaspura) we have Hathway from local cable operator. Want to check with you folks:

1. I am moving from Reliance to Hathway. Many people claim Reliance PQ to be very good - so will Hathway PQ be good enough?

2. The cable operator told me they have 19 HD channels - is that what it is? I see on this thread that two channels have 5.1 sound - is that right?

3. I am getting 7,500 for one year incl. STB + 1 yr channels. He quoted 5,500 for STB & HD channels + 250 pm for cable services. No clue about second year. The reason for choosing Hathway is monthly price (250) + expectations of lower outages etc. Is this price expected to continue or next year would the cable operator say ..."saar we need to pay to Hathway an annual charge for HD et. al." Any soul has some knowledge on this?

4. (Edit) What do i get in the package - HDMI cable, anything else? Also any future plans of Hathway (enabling recording etc.)?

I was all set for Videocon D2H HD but this thread has forced me to look at hathway - which I have nearly ordered (yet to pay) but cablewallah attitude is something i dont want to take after 3 yrs of DTH.

Cable operator, as expected, is technically challenged - so get some mumbling from him in form of answers and thus posing some questions here.

Hurray!! finally able to get the Dolby D 5.1... little bit of settings was required... changed Audio settings in Hathway HD box to Dolby... and little tweak on the receiver did the trick... Enjoying it ..!!

Thanks fellows!!

Hey maniac.. here is my opininon of your Q's

Q1: Hathway HD PQ is really good and equally competitive to any other players. No second thought about it.

Q2: Currently there are 20 HD channels with 2 channles having Dolby signal... Some testing is going on and hope to include few more down the line with Dolby.. good VFM

Q3: Most of the forum members here have paid yearly subscription of Rs.6,666/- including the set-top box and one HDMI cable and unlimited HD channels.. At this moment we are not sure about the next year...

Q4: Set-top box has a USB port. Probably we can record movie using this USB port once they provide the firmware upgrade.

I would suggest you to go for it...

Probably Gopi can add few more thoughts of him...!!

I think Petes covered everything :) Right now 3 HD channels have dolby. Movies Now, Colors and M Tunes. They are planning to enable it on all the HD channels.

They haven't thought about the monthly price after the first year. It won't be as high as DTHs. Due to digitization, cable will have more bandwidth compared to any DTHs so you can always expect more SD + HD channels than any DTHs soon.

Since you are getting the Hathway signal from a LCO, he is charging you more than Rs6600.

I was wondering if anyone knew if Hathway is gonna add Neo Sports HD during the Euro 2012 tournament. I think Dish TV has ads promising that they will add it but no other operator, as far as I know.

hey maniac completely agree with petes this are my ans to ur question
1)pls dont worry about the PQ and AQ,its among the best when compared to any dth, hathway has also started giving 5.1 sound and the audio is not played with like the dth operators do, so expect almost pure pass through of 5.1 surround sound..
2)yes they have 19 to 20 HD channels depending upon location and also here is mumbai i get 5.1 on 4 channels in my area
3)considering u not a direct customer to hathway the price is right for a year cos they have to pass a huge sum for HD channels to hathway
4)they do provide a hdmi cable but its a very short wire so pls invest in better length wire as they r available for 300 400 rs on ebay.they r considering the recording feature as they have a unsued usb port on hd stb a software upgrade should do the trick..
i would suggest just go ahead and have the best experience enjoy...

Thanks a ton for all the replies guys. Guess will take the plunge.

On paper Hathway's offer is very good - you almost have a price guarantee and almost all channels which in DTH cost 450-600 pm. The thing that perhaps was making / makes me nervous is the local cable operator. In case of DTH or direct from Hathway you are (at least you think) dealing a company where issues may get addressed in a better manner.

Will take the plunge and keep you posted. Only if the local cable operator comes and installs it now. Have chased him a couple of time already :)

Installed Hathway over the weekend, not without follow-ups though. Things that are good:

1. HD channels are good with Dolby sound in a few of them : Colors, Movies Now. The picture is crisp
2. No hassles in installing
3. The EPG is quick and intuitive. I have not used Tata Sky EPG earlier but from what I hear and see if it is similar and not tough to get used to.
4. SD channels : many of them are good (just a notch lower than Reliance Big TV)
5. The channel choice is very good - almost all channels that matter to me are there
6. For people who see regional channels (I do not) there is a wide choice

The not so good:
1. Some of the SD channels are poorer than others. In Reliance Digital it was consistent. In Hathway it is not. Do not know the reason why
2. It takes time to switch channels. Before this I thought Reliance was poor in this regard but Hathway is a notch lower. EPG is much quicker though.
3. The Dolby sound didnt sound like DVD - maybe I am missing something or need to do more tests. I have connected through Optical cable
4. Till the time you select the HD channel it says "No Info Available" for programs. After selection it fetches all info. Bug in Settop box or something else?

All in all good for the price - I ended up paying higher than people who went to Hathway Direct (Rs. 7,500 for 1 year) but it is still better than some of the others if you include STB + 1 yr subscription. Channel choice is good. Yet to test support but shouldnt be much of a challenge.

In this DTH / Cable war till the time verdict is out, every company is holding on its own. Hathway has its space there among the large players with its VFM positioning. Though it can do better with pricing consistency, price clarity (what in second year?), policies and standardization among cable networks including support. Else even with a good product they may lose out especially the premium customers who will prefer service over 5-10% saving.

PS : I have a CRT. Can i put a splitter on the cable wire and use one end with CRT TV and other with STB.

I have Reliance STB with remote, can I sell it off? Are there buyers for it?

About EPG of HD channels, Hathway is working on it.

You can use the output of the STB to CRT TV instead of using a splitter.

I agree some SD channels are not of that great quality. I think it is mainly because of compression or bandwidth that Hathway has. I hope it will improve when the digitization is complete.

So I can take the RF out to the CRT and it will be using the signal independently and not be dependent on what I am seeing through STB.

I am sure they will sort things out. It sounds logical that cable based digital services will be able to carry more data (channels) over DTH.

Yes correct. The only problem would be, if you turn off the STB, you won't be able to watch anything on CRT.

Otherwise splitter would be the best option.

Just spoke to scod18 in mumbai
They said 4500 for 1 yr includes the set top box cost...for 12 hd channels as of now
Hav paid for it... Will post pics once installed

I recently moved to Hathway HD from their regular service. Even through the STB is expensive at 5500 the monthly rentals remain the same and number of HD channels are more than any DTH service providers. Very impressed with the picture and audio quality of HD channels. I have attached some screenshot here.
